5 Story Rooftop Gardening in Spain (Full Tour)

  • My friend Robert Strauss is The Gardener On The Roof. I met him in Barcelona, Spain and had to come to his house to see his highly-productive and creative rooftop garden. In fact, it's more than a rooftop garden as he has 5 total stories of growing space.
He makes his own compost by getting scraps from the local green grocer, as well as collecting leaves from his neighbors during the fall and winter.
In this video, we go through his entire garden from start to finish to show you exactly how he grows so much food in such a tight urban area.
As a bonus, we harvest and cook calçots a type of spring onion that's famous in Catalunya with romesco sauce. We pull it straight from his garden, throw it on the grill, get some newspaper from Big Al, and then eat it all together to close out the video.

Hey Kevin. What a pleasure it was to have you at the house and what a GREAT video you produced. Out of the 1,967 views the video has had at this moment, I promise you that my mother-in-law and I are responsible for no more than 1,500 of them. And because "Endow 77" stared at the screen for "three minutes" after seeing my compost, I'm putting together a video on how I do it. Hope to have it up and running in a couple of days. Thanks for everything, Kevin, Jon, and the EG team.

@@nameunknown007 Nah. I may add a little more mature compost to each load I dump in to get it started, but that's about all. If I really want to cook it, I get some hardwood shavings and sawdust from a local carpenter. That gets the temperature quickly >60°C.

I am wondering if you could entice Robert to discuss his composting method in more detail, I would be very interested in trying something like this at home and love the compact design. I have looked (possibly not hard enough) to find more details on his particular design but have fallen short. It seems it needs minimal sun, relying almost entirely on decomposing material for heat, has little to no drainage (for water), and apart from a regular turn there is little aeration. It almost seems to defy some of the basic rules of this style of compost. I AM VERY INTRIGUED!

Great, I garden on a cement pad hanging over a steep bluff on the PNW, so this was especially interesting to me, of course at the moment we have snow, but gardening will commence soon, LOL. I also grow broad beans all winter, mine are starting to flower now too, but the snow will set them back a little I think, great crop, delicious beans and nitrogen fixing, more Americans should grow them.

Hi Florice. I'm averaging about 4 kilos/square meter or about 1 pound per square foot. Unfortunately, in years past I didn't weigh or record any leafy greens, garlic, most of the onions I grew, strawberries, and a bunch of other stuff. This year I plan to weigh every leaf of lettuce.

Sooo awesome! I love the whole video, even Backstreet Boys playing in the background at Frucat. We were in Barcelona in the summer of 2019, would love to go back. Everything about the video is so interesting to me, especially how much he grew in a small space and his persistence. I was wondering about the watering with how hot and dry it can be in the summer. Self-watering systems seem to be in great need, especially in areas where water is hard to come by. I am trying to decide if I can make my raised beds have some properties of a self watering system.
