TOMATO Powder is Wonderful | Don't TOSS Those Scraps 🍅

  • Tomato Powder is super easy to make, and has a lot of uses. In today's video we'll go over how we make it, and talk about a few of the ways we use it to enhance our meals. We stared by placing all the leftover skins, seeds, and scraps, from our recent harvest, into our Dehydrator. We set the temp to around 115-120°F and let it run overnight (about 12 hours). If you don't have a dehydrator, you can also dry in your oven - set on lowest setting.
Collect up all your dried tomato bits, and place them into a highspeed blender or food processor. Pulse and blend to your desired consistency - jar it up and enjoy! ♥ The end product can be used to "thicken" various tomato recipes without altering the taste, and we also use it in rice dishes like jambalaya, and quite a few different pasta dishes to add both color and flavor.

When powdering stuff, put a sheet of plastic wrap under the lid to keep all the good stuff in the blender so none of it gets lost in the cap.

Nice as a rethickener if put too much liquid in roux for brown sauce, plus it adds flavor. Mixed with some salt and sprinkled on popcorn, taste like ketchup chips. Add to ground meat for meatloaf to help bind instead of only breadcrumbs (any veggie powder really, not just tomato). Mix in water when cooking rice. Add to flour when making bread, with herbs, garlic powder, etc. Make compound butter.

I am thinking putting tomato powder or perhaps even a spinach powder into something like pasta dough might be something to try. It would not effect the liquid amounts in the recipe but it could still impart the flavor I might be looking for. Thank you for this useful information.

Ive used dehydrated spinach and basil powdered in home made pasta. It works fantastic. Better than the fresh pureed spinach id bet the tomato would be really nice. (Or even carrot or squash powder)
I dont seem to bake or make pasta in summer as much as we do in winter.
I dont have AC other than a portable and baking heats the house up lol.
I do love making pasta tho but I think again its time consuming and the summers are filled with so much stuff to get done. Lol

Started making that powder this year for tomato paste. So tired of recipes that call for 1 or 2 tblsp of paste and then throwing the rest away or losing 20 little bags of tomato paste in the bottom of the freezer, lol.

Hi Michelle, I hear you and have thrown out many unused partial cans. Later I would put a tablespoon or two on wax paper, and yes get lost in freezer, then I found a pk of 8 small containers at the dollar store, hold about 2 tbs each, easy to fill and find-in freezer. Maybe this will help.

I just really adore the tomato powder idea and started dehydrating mine, too, but to use the scraps, the leftovers, is ingenious! Have you tried dehydrating peppers, bell peppers, to turn into powder?? The other day, I ground all the spinach I had dehydrated over the year, got 1 quart of powder. I thought it would be useful for soups, pasta, and Spinach Dip!

...Omg...dehydrated spinach for spinach dip...I think I just went to heaven...!!😍💞 I found out last fall that I'm allergic to lettuce. ...The entire daisy family.😭 No sunflowers or seeds, no Zinnias...the list seems endless.😔 Somehow, it took me all this time to realize that. So, spinach, which I love more than lettuce, will now be a substitute for it whenever it can be. My first dehydrator just arrived on Tuesday, and I can't wait to plant my fall spinach crop, as were in zone 5a. Thank you so much for the idea! Blessings to you!😙💖

Powder tomato, basil and chipotle powder go great in Mayo to put on sandwiches, in cold past salads, as a base for a creamy salad dressing and more. The excluding the Mayo, you use it as a seasoning for eggs, pasta, pizza, added to melted butter and garlic to brush onto toasted bread, and so much more.
I keep powdered mixed greens from the garden to toss into eggs, soups, casseroles, and many other things to add a nutritional boost. Especially those one pot meals where you need more veggies. (Even chili.)

Hi Thank you all your great videos. I have been making tomato powder for a couple of years. I do not like the seeds in powder or my sauce, so I de-seed when I bring them in. I first started with the skins and then ventured to using the full tomato. My tomato's come in late and can be slow, then the rush. I cut in half, de-seed and then pop in the freezer. skins come off really easy, when defrosted, until I have enough to roast. I also make powder using the raw tomato. . I try to grow the larger slicers etc but have not had much luck over the years. Cherry comes in late, slow and then the abundance. There is only the two of us so I make the sauce we will use and then powder the rest. Powder makes great gifts for those without a garden.

Ok, I made some tomato powder a few years ago and it was awesome. Then I started reading it was only good for about 6 month. I have questioned that but several canning people on youtube have said the same thing. I didn't have the heart to throw it out, but I just assumed since it was fully dehydrated and powdered that it would last for many years just like the other vegetables that I have dehydrated. What are you thoughts??

If stored properly it will last for many years. You can also vacuum seal it into the jars and it'll be perfectly fine. The government doesn't want you to be self-sufficient so they post a lot of scare tactics. 🍀

In my experience, fully dehydrated food doesn't really "go bad" so much as the flavor and nutritional value eventually degrades. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt you to eat it or anything, but eventually it will have less "punch" and maybe start to taste stale. Interested to hear other thoughts on this, but that's what I've observed with my own dehydrated food. 😊

I add it to meat loaf! Or anything made with beef or pork that I also add onions and peppers to, like meat balls or porcupine meat balls. On top of bread sticks before I bake them. I've even put in home made salad dressings.

I just made a batch of tomato powder and the flavor is great. My only issue is I've run it through the dehydrator for several hours and then ground it up in my blender. Afterwards, the powder was still sticky and, after having sat in the jar for a few hours, clumped together. I ran it through the dehydrator again (for 12 hours) in its powder form (placed in several coffee filters) but the texture is the same. Also, I placed a desiccant package in the jar with the powder. Is this the way it's supposed to be?

I know I have mentioned this before and it is kinda rare. Only about 20 to 30% of the population are super taster people but I am one. While some bitter things I do like there is a huge list of things that taste off/funny/super bitter/soapy etc...
Well I found out that this tomato powder made from skins and seeds is one.
I dutifully saved and dehydrated my skins and seeds and powdered them and about gagged at the strong bitter taste.
I thought well shoot I must have done something wrong.
But same with the next batch I made. The doctor when I mentioned it said well you are a super taster and don't do arugula or cilantro or fresh basil(dried is fine🤷‍♀️ so not sure whats up there)water cress and a whole list of off the wall stuff sets my taste buds off.
So if any of you do this but don't find the taste pleasant or find it bitter, its probably not the powder -it might be your taste buds.
I also can taste if I roast the tomatoes with the skins or cook with the skins on. Its like a lingering bitter after taste even thos the sauce is fine while eating. No one else in my family can taste it but I can.
So I dip/peel and deseed my tomatoes before turning into sauce or canned stewed tomatoes.
A few seeds here and there are not a huge deal and eating tomatoes in the garden also no big deal as its not concentrated.
I've also dehydrated my tomato sauce after its made and powdered and its fine. So definitely the skin/seeds for me.
But in case anyone here does it and finds it tasting a bit too bitter you might be a super taster lol.
Here ends my PSA for the day 🤣🤣🥰
Happy gardening and putting food by everyone.

Also when I'm doing canning of plain tomato sauce or stewed tomatoes with onion pepper celery and pizza or spaghetti sauce i almost always have a half jar or or so that is not enough to can/jar or use up really quick I put it on my fruit leather trays and dry down crispy and powder.
Then make a big thing of good buttered popcorn and sprinkle it in! Add some cheese and you get spaghetti popcorn or pizza popcorn or like you just mention you could dehydrat your jambalaya sauce and make wonderful Cajun popcorn.
Oh I forgot. Ive dehydrated salsa too. It makes a killer popcorn sprinkle. Lol.
Apparently I like to eat lol. I love to cook and I hate spending way too much money on convenience foods lol.
I might have to look into dehydrated cheese to make my own cheese powder 🙃 😋

Thank you! This explains it! I have the same issue. I have found the tomato powder made from skins only (no seeds) to be much more palatable for me. That means that I must blanch and peel some of them.

Love this! I used to always make myself egg noodles with butter and diced Tomatoes but I hated how liquidy it was so this is such a great option! Also I beat if you use this with some nutritional yeast, dried green pepper powder + garlic powder you could throw it on tortilla chips for diy Doritos

This video is older but maybe you'll see my question...
I made roasted tomato sauce and i tossed everything in olive oil first. I removed the skins for the sauce but they were so tasty I wanted to see if i could dehydrate them for a powder. Is it safe to dehydrate the skins after they've been roasted with olive oil 🤔
