Great film! There is possibly a rental house 300 metres from the auld man's beach. We had two nights in April. Bit of snow on the Skye Cuilin. Bonfire made by the locals, all the kids got together, a dram or six. In the film there is a church over the burn at the north end of the beach, our beach had a house looking like a conversion of that church. Nice rock pools too. The kids enjoyed it even though as Scouse Aussies, Arisaig in April wasn't their usual beach experience! :-)
Wonderful film about everything that matters, life ,the environment and mostly, people who need people. ❤
Loved this movie since seeing it the first time in 1986. I wished I could have been hired by someone like Happer and worked in a remote part of the world.
What a good film this is. I think its Forsythe's best movie. Very few directors who had the kind of droll humor and charm to carry this kind of story all the way to the end. One of the best endings I can recall from a contemporary movie.
Comfort and Joy is hilarious. It also deals with the fact that everyone is a little bit mentally ill. Dickie Bird's nightmares reliving his breakup are savage.

I love how, even from a distance, you can tell Mac running toward Happer on the beach vs. Danny, whose arms are all akimbo and flailing like as 12-year-old. Great Burt Lancaster scene.
I never get tired of this movie. It's hard to believe it's 25 years old. A classic.

Camusdarach Beach if anyone wants to know the name of the location. Well worth visiting.
I will not say that the film was so good for many but its soundtrack was unbelievably unbelievable.
I was always confused about whether Mac really wanted something beyond his rank and file cubicle life and this was his big moment or it was just another deal but more of a hassle. Seeing his deal disappear like sand in front of his boss while Danny makes his own opportunity come to life (maybe not with fickle happer) always made me wonder if Mac was that disappointed or more relieved as he stared at Houston from his balcony. One thing always gets me and it’s that phone call at the very end (and that unreal soundtrack).
You know who was ringing.
He's disappointed because he's put so much effort into the deal and it's been so difficult and he's also started to love the place and had those feelings to deal with too. So, I guess there was an element of just wanting it over and signing on the dotted line so he could complete his task as a professional deal maker. Then, suddenly it was all for nothing (at least 'the deal' he'd been working on). I imagine he was relieved but exasperated, particularly when Happer says "I'm glad I got here in time to stop your refinery caper." Such a funny line. Pockets full of shells, photos on his wall and then the lonely ringing phone show where his heart had gone.

The beach scene was actually not shot at where the village of Pennan was located. You tell because you can see the Cullin Mountains from the Isle Skye on the horizon.
The inconsistency with the mountains in the background seems like the sort of thing that would have annoyed Forsyth inordinately.
Adam Hodgkinson it was a deliberate decision on Forsyth's behalf. He wanted the mountains in the background.
It's shot near Arisaig (Morar).

The Small Isles of Eigg and Rum can be seen, and the end of Skye.
Apollo 13 was not shot in space.

Amazing movie. I once worked for a flighty bastard just like the character Burt Lancaster played. He have me spin my wheels on a project. Then just as it was coming together he'd change his mind. And he'd listen to people not even involved in it. Mostly with asinine ideas.
Probably a Perceiver type (Myers-Briggs). They always want to keep their options open and avoid decision making.

I was about to comment on how frustrating that must have been and that people that are like that as bosses don't deserve good employees - how annoying and undermining and crazy making and really quite demoralizing, unsupportive, and irresponsible people like that are as a boss / owner / employer.
In fact I love this movie but Happer gives me ptsd from working with and for people like that as well. Funny and quirky for the movie, yes, but in reality, sadly absolutely not.
And where I still hold that to be true and hope the commenter has that experience well in their past, it IS useful to see things from another perspective and lens like neuroscience and brain / personality type.
It helps to explain people's otherwise potentially incomprehensible behavior better and frames it possibly more accurately and usefully as not necessarily intentionally incompetent and unproductive on that bosses' part. Or people like that.
But they do still need to be aware of their tendencies and weaknesses and how they can negatively affect others. Although it helps to know it's not necessarily intentional or malicious.

need info please: what was the significance of the webbed feet of the girl swimming? was the baby in the movie from the lady at the hotel, the girl in the water or the punk rock girl? was Mr. Knox at the beach house related to the Knox that owned the Knox oil company? Did the owner's (Burt Lancaster) dad buy the original Knox oil company from Mr. Knox's dad? was there a secret theme to this movie where the people at the town were helping to maintain a habitat for mermaids? was the baby from a mermaid?
I wondered if the girl with webbed feet was a selkie.
I don't know the movie well enough to answer those questions but the scene where the woman (Marina) let's he new, human paramour see her webbed feet is to tell him and us that she is definitely a mermaid.
The webbed feet meant she was a kelpie part human and part seal a wee bit like a mermaid Scots folklore
