Moments from Local Hero: You can't eat scenery (It's red all over!)

  • This is perhaps my favourite scene of the whole movie.
Victor tries to comfort Mac about his internal conflict over the sale of Ferness with the profound statement, "You can't eat scenery".
Mac then discovers one of the wonders of our universe - The Aurora Borealis. There is some fantastic drunk acting (assuming he was acting!) from Peter Riegert. His screams of "It's red all over!" always have me in stitches.
Great stuff you wont find in and Hollywood movie.

The line that gets me, for reasons I still can’t figure out, is near the end where the villager says, “Is that the yank away in that thing?”
    “Aye”
“Bugger it. I meant to say cheerio”.
Or however it went. I kind of feel like there’s been too many moments in my life like that.

Of all of the films that I have seen over the last forty years, every time someone has asked me what my favorite movie is, I tell them "Local Hero". The story, the scenery, Mark Knopfler's music, all of it, hit me hard. I was in a 60% travel job at the time and I could so relate to the feelings Mac was having and what he was going through. I was in a hotel room somewhere and wanted to be in that small town. I'll never forget how this movie made me feel.

i cannot watch this movie without my eyes stinging. The intangibles of Scotland's scenery are incredible. Not just the beauty of it bathed in the soft northern light, there's something else there embedded in the earth that seeps in to your body and your mind. I have to say that this is the only film, and I'm not exaggerating that I think should not have clips on TH-cam. Why? Because this film is so perfectly subtle, that one needs to have it wash over them, rather than be briefed by scenes or synopsis. Seeing this film is an experience. As much as I love seeing the clips, I cannot watch them for it dilutes the impact of being exposed to the film in its entirety. Those who haven't seen it, risk having the magic ruined by seeing clips. just saying.

@TangerineTangerine I'm very interested in what you said. Can you tell me, why is it that you enjoy watching it on YT even though you have the DVD? My own theory is that we need to share these great moments with others, even strangers and preferably LIVE (being broadcast) rather than at our own isolated time and place, completely unconnected with others. I've been studying our recent media/culture transformation into 'On Demand' everything.

Good points, but then again ... in school we (most) were introduced to Shakespeare plays via the Folger Shakespeare paperbacks, each act and scene preceded by a short summary of the action to follow. But (especially given, as here, the different dialect of English we're about to apprehend) it lets us more focus on the art. Overall, these clips whet one's lure to the film.
