As a 19yr old this film had a profound effect on me 41yr ago. Made on the doorstep of Aberdeen the oil capital of Europe, how ironic. Should be on the school curriculum this one, thank you for this video.

Well, firstly thank you very much for posting this wonderful tribute…it’s genuinely appreciated👍👍👍👍
The whole concept of this great film is truly fascinating and for many the reason why it’s loved so much.
On a completely personal level, Local Hero: film, soundtrack, actors, scenery, story…everything…brings something that is so complete, wonderful and beautiful that no other film has matched.
I can think of so many more dramatic films, more emotional films, more exciting films and so on but for me no other has so much ability to capture so much of our lives in a most brilliantly realistic portrayal of human desires, needs, weaknesses and contentment all wrapped up in a truly beautiful view of life and our place in it.
Thank you, all of you, from the bottom of my heart🙏🙏🙏🙏

One of my favourite movies ever, along with Waking Ned which has a similar feel to it.

This film got me through a dark time I didn't understand. Being sent to a British public school as a border when I was seven in the early 60's and mental health problems occurring in my mid 30's because. This amazing film helped me and was my immediate goto for some sort of peace of mind and balance. And I still watch it regularly.

You know for a long time, I never got that joke but then someone told me about the history of unwed mothers and I was like “oh my god! that’s dark.”

Wondrous movie. I’m an American and very much relate to it in part because when I was 20 in the fall of 1982 I was lucky enough to spend a semester abroad in Wales. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Not Scotland, to which I traveled that fall, but much of the vibe.

Went there in 1990. Wrote down the telephone number, just in case. It's one of my very favorite movies ever and I rewatch it when I need a lift.

    Pure brilliance.
Must rank as one of the best films ever.
Cannot believe it was made forty years ago.
It is great as a relaxant.
I hope l am still around for the 50th anniversary and fit enough to make the journey to Pennan.

Came to the film through the music of Mark Knopfler but stayed because of the writing, performances and beauty of it. It helped my love of movies (esp british ones) grow so much that I am now studying film and broadcasting with a view to a wee career in writing/directing.

Lived in Fraserburgh nearby and I remember when it was being made. Beautiful film. Btw - there were actually a few punks in that lovely corner of the world : )

I took my father and sister and wife, to Pennan in 1995, I will never forget our trip. My father said he remembered being in the pub/hotel he was a Royal Marine during the war, we are from Greenock, and loved our return to our homeland. The town is a wonder spot for me. I only wish my wife could have been there again, but we have our memories forever. Thanks to Mark Knofler

This will be a short video which will be watched again and again and again . I was there to meet the cast and can assure you that their emotions portrayed in this video are genuine!! What a wonderful 40th celebration we've had in Pennan. Thank you Jon Gill for this tribute, and Jon Melville for the book. 😊

I was in college when seeing this movie the first thousand times. Mark Knopfler’s music was the tipping point to make this in my 5 favorite movies. Other quotes I will never forget “I wonder what the poor people are doing tonight.”, “You’re going to have to buck up and face the fact you’re filthy stinking rich.”
And the rabbit for dinner scene and the Russian!
Another movie everyone should watch is Fandango with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson. Both movies are funny, emotional, and so highly enjoyable in every aspect!!

As they say north of the border "I'm away ta get the book". I have had the dvd for many years, having purchased it in Scotland in about 1994.
I now know that several endings were tried for the final scene. I always thought that the ringing telephone could have been answered by the motorcyclist leaving the possibility of a sequel.
But on mature reflection, best left well alone.

Excellent film, thank you. Just wish I could have been there myself for the commemoration of 40 years of existence of the best ever film (in my and I guess several million other folk). Whole lotta scenery though 😀

Thanks for this lovely tribute video. So great to hear from four of the cast actors and others in attendance. I'm planning a visit to Pennan and other Local Hero filming locations in 2025. Just returned from a magical trip through the north and south islands of New Zealand. (What a gorgeous country.) Scotland is next on the list of desired travel destinations. I love the film and look forward to spending some time in the village, and then over to "Ben's beach."

John, thanks so much for your comments. It was a dream job without a doubt. All the best for your future travels! Allow plenty of time for Pennan... the people are amazing and most are the biggest fans of all. They completely understand why enthusiasts of the film are visiting all these years later.

Local Hero is one of those movies that touches the very essence of life.
    Ferris Bueller is another.
Am actually quite emotional watching this lovely piece.

It speaks to the beauty of this film that when I was viewing the northern lights in northern British Columbia last summer the dialogue from the movie popped into my head. "Tell him it's the aurora Borealis" "I have some more information, sir. It's the aurora borealis." "Ah, the aurora. I haven't seen that since 1953 - in Alaska. You're a lucky man, MacIntyre."

This was 1982, the middle of The Cold War so putting an affable Soviet character, Victor, in the movie was extremely unusual for the time, but it made a lot of people like the movie even more. It was definitely a political statement. I'd really like to know what Victor's Russian wife was saying as she dropped him off and sped off, though.

see Norm Jewison's "The Russians Are Coming" for the comedy template of Local Hero.
