  • Two different types of insulation testers(MEGGERS), one that you crank, which is mechanical, and the other being electronic. I will show you both units, explain why they're so useful, and demonstrate. Enjoy!

    Good stuff in this video
    Tip: When testing something like a three phase winding be aware that an intermittent connection with the voltage applied could result in a much higher spike or rise in voltage. I've seen this happen and can result in creating a flash over between windings or the metal framework. This can be avoided by combining all circuits together and test them as bundle of leads. The reason flash over may happen is that momentarily the magnetic field collapses, and induces some nasty spikes in voltage. So your connections although temporary are very important.
    This is not as likely an issue with a "megger" but there are A.C. type "high pot" or high potential testers, the same rules apply. In effect these test have the potential to become a destructive test if not performed in accordance with proper methods and procedures.

    I wish he explain about circuit breaker, because after I turn off circuit breaker, I unscrew hot wire everything ok but when I touched neutral with screw driver, " bang " blue spark the size about baseball

    Working for a supplier I delivered a brand new crank unit to the oilfield dock-side and the guys waiting immediately each threw a buck on the picnic table and commenced to see whom could hold the leads the longest. The old guy won and said the secret was to hold 'em as tight as possible to maximize surface area and spread out the pain.

      You can use a megger to kill sea lice too. :-)

    The crank one is cool. I take it puts out DC voltage. I wonder how many amps it puts out. Probably not enough to charge a car battery in an emergency situation. Thank you for sharing

      The current output is low for the crank unit, maybe 10mA.

    testing the drill you did not have it on pulling trigger ?????

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, made no difference because the neutral is always connected to the motor. :-) The hot is switched ON/OFF.

      you have to turn on all manual switches to properly test as mentioned in the video. It gets tricky when the switches are not manually controlled (computer/logic controlled relays etc). Another trick to save time is to short L and N together while testing
