Somehow Jason and Andy are like chill when swapping or changing their ways to play. While it seems the violins are harder to play swapped, or play other instruments...
1. Tchaikovsky String Quartet no 1 - swap hands 2. Brachms String Quartet no 2 - sit facing outwards and play without looking at each other 3. Schostakovich String Quartet no 8 - double speed 4. Beethoven String Quartet op. 59 no 1 - playing everything on lowest string 5. Ravel String Quartet in F major - swap instruments 6. Mozart String Quartet no 19 - hold violin/viola like a cello & hold cello like a guitar
I love this paired with the previous "played properly" video from last week. I wouldn't be sad if more Ling Ling work out videos were uploaded after a better sounding twin for reference
i love how during the ravel quartet, jason and eddy are doing decently and you can tell that brett and andy are NOT comfortable on their swapped instruments
Challenge 6 (facing outwards) is a very useful exercise. It forces you to listen, and you can't get away with unnatural tempo changes or rhythmical inaccuracies. I remember a cello master class where we were all sitting in a big ring facing outwards, and were asked to start all at the same time without any signal. It worked amazingly well.
A friend of mine (a pianist/vocalist) and I (an organist/vocalist) would get very bored in high school chorus. So he and I would *Ling Ling the conductor/teacher.* At random places, one of us would start singing a quarter tone high or low, then go back in tune. A bit later, the other would do the opposite. Sometimes, we would do it _ensemble_ with one higher, one lower. It was great ear-training for us, but the teacher (sitting at the piano, in front) would start twisting her head, like a dog trying to figure out what's happening and where a sound is coming from. She never did find out.
Andy has the cutest dimples! And it is nice to see Jason with a smile! I have to say that Andy looked more at ease with the violin than Brett did with the cello. I laugh every time I see him with one; he concentrates SO hard! :)
