Some of the other gems of PT are:
    Buying New Soul
    Dark Matter
    Mellotron Scratch
    Gravity Eyelids
    Russia on Ice
    The Moon Touches Your Shoulder
    Don't Hate Me
    Radioactive Toy
    Dislocated Day
    Moonloop (instrumental)
    Sleep of no Dreaming
    Sever
    Stranger by the Minute
    Shesmovedon
    Shallow
    Halo
    Open Car
    Glass Arm Shattering
    My Ashes
    Sleep Together
    Normal
    The Blind House
I would highly recommend to listen to Buying New Soul first. The keyboard arrangement in the intro is the most soul touching and memorable intro's I have ever listened to. Loving the fact that you guys are continuing your reaction to PT. Please do not stop, ever. Cheers from India. 🇮🇳

This is the first PT song I ever heard. I saw the CD art on a listening station at the local music store and listened to the whole CD hahah. Wound up buying everything I could find from PT and going home to listen properly. Wow, that was 20 years ago, Time Flies... 😉

In the year 2001 I got ''Stupid Dream'' for my birthday. Never heard of the band: Porcupine Tree. However, somehow I kept playing it, and playing it. Saw an add for a live show in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Bought tickets right away and went there with my wife, did not know what to expect. Yet from the first note on - magic! Chris Maitland on drums stole the show first then SW and the rest - how on earth could this band have been under my radar for so long? They completely blew us away. At the merchandise stand I bought No Man- Returning Jesus , apparently a side project (Steven Wilson + Tim Bowness. Please try No Man's ''Truenorth'' from their Shoolyard Ghosts album) Completely different, yet so fantastic, atmospheric, intriguing. Then I discovered he had this whole back catalogue. Started with Ligtbulb Sun. Then I went on Ebay, just to get hold of all the other stuff, there was no TH-cam in those days. Think I bought all I could find (Check ''Voyage PT, The complete discography'' 572 + (!) pages). Saw him 40+ times lives in three different countries. Never ever failed to amaze me. I am very happy many people discover his music, it's a most rewarding goldmine and a never ending story. Enjoy, as I enjoy your vibe.

NicknLex, all I have to say about this reaction is your so correct when you say anything by Porcupine Tree of Steven Wilson will be great...some are greater than others and to this day I have only heard a few songs that I didn't like and those are from his Voyage 34 album however the first song on the album is fantastic, the other 3 are just not up to PT standards. Other than those, I've liked or loved everything else and that's a rare statement to make for any band, even my favorite band Genesis has its list of stinkers. Keep up the great work!

Yay Porcupine Tree!!!!! I'm definitely looking forward to your Anesthetize reaction, my vote is for the live Tilburg version. It's definitely a moving experience (one of the few live versions I would recommend over the studio version of any song). Take your time and keep diving into the discography first though. In Absentia, Stupid Dream, Fear of a Blank Planet, and Deadwing are all amazing albums with so many tracks I could recommend!

  • @bobford100

Great reaction video guys..... I'm sure whichever PT or Steven Wilson tracks you listen to in future, you will never be disappointed. SW is now in his 50's, but still looks so very young. I think it must be down to his lifestyle, and Nick, your right about the IQ similarity, I think its the specific guitar phrases used on this track are very IQ. Keep up the super content. Cheers Bob.

here are a lot of incredible PT songs, almost all of them are amazing!
Please react to Arriving Somewhere But Not Here and Mellotron Scratch, which has a beautiful outro, I personally think that song is criminally underrated.
Anyway, keep reacting to Rush and PT, my two favorite prog rock bands.

Ok so this will be the second time I’ve been introduced to a band that I’d never heard of and I like it. I don’t like progressive for it’s own sake, just done well. If I like it enough to close my eyes and and let my imagination take a trip somewhere, then it’s good music and I’ll probably come back for more. 😎

Sorry to be such a pest but this is my second time with this request, only because I'm so sure that you'll both fall in love with this song! Here's a couple of old songs I'm almost positive you'll both love. TRAFFIC - "THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS" - Steve Winwood on vocals and written by him as well and then - Blind Faith - Presence of the Lord - with Steve Winwood; as well as Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Rick Grech. They were considered a supergroup! Here's the link for low spark - th-cam.com/video/rEZH0t5Yozw/w-d-xo.html

Nice, great rereaction, love Porcupine Tree, Steve Wilson is a prog giant.
For your next Rush reaction, "Bytor and the Snowdog" or "Necromancer", are definitely due, the early tunes need to be visited, "In the end" needs to be added to the bucket list also.
Seeing Nick's emotions stirred on the last couple of songs, he needs a completely new direction, you won't be disappointed!

  • @paulbelair9890
    @paulbelair9890 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When you talk about popularity, music is very subjective from country to country. I'm very surprised Nick, being from Germany has never heard of Saga. If you look into this band (together for over 40 years!) they had there big hits in the U.S. in late 70's "On the loose" and "Wind Him Up" and just have an abundance of amazing prog music. They could never really break the U.S. market being a Canadian band (toured with Rush) and found their home, mostly in Germany. Anyway, hope you can listen to some of their songs and then react to "conversation" (I've always loved this instrumental tune) You'll be hooked!

  • @ben_dornie

Another lovely reaction - Steven Wilson is indeed a genius and bassist Colin Edwin is worthy of a special mention on this song! At the outset, Porcupine Tree's music was more psychedelic than the songs you've listened to so far, so it would be interesting if you checked out one of their early songs to enable you to compare and contrast their initial style. During this psychedelic phase, Steven wrote the remarkable 30+ minute instrumental Voyage 34. But, fear not, I'm not going to suggest that you should react to that! :)
My suggestion for one of their early songs is the wonderful Always Never (th-cam.com/video/y9FTJV6lWEE/w-d-xo.html) from their second album Up The Downstair (1993). At this time, Porcupine Tree was pretty much Steven Wilson playing everything on his own (plus using a drum machine), although Always Never was the first song to feature Colin Edwin. The version I've linked to is a remastered version which saw Gavin Harrison replace the drum machine that the original recording had. Steven also re-recorded some of the vocals (curiously, I thought the vocals on the original version were actually better). Take it from me, you'll love this song! :D
Alternatively, if you're feeling braver and have the time, The Sky Moves Sideways (Part 1) from 1995 (th-cam.com/video/590BYwVuC_E/w-d-xo.html) is an extraordinary 18 minute composition with a number of distinct sections. That album was the first which was fully recorded as a band. The song takes a little bit of time to get going, but it's a glorious atmospheric experience from start to end that deserves to be listened to - it's the kind of song where you lay down, turn off the lights, turn the sound up and let the music wash over you!

When I first dug into Porcupine Tree a couple years ago at a friend's suggestion, I was intrigued but a little bored with the earlier space rock stuff, but Lighbulb Sun was the first album that really got me excited about the band. This and it's sister album, Stupid Dream, sit at an interesting crossroads between their psychedelic 90s output and the heavier sounds of the 2000s.
I have since revised my impressions of the earlier stuff --I'm a lousy first reactor. At this point I love pretty much their whole catalogue, even the quirky first album, and I appreciate the variety.

Porcupine Tree are great. 'In Absentia', 'Deadwing' and 'Fear of a Blank Planet' are excellent albums. 'Anesthetize' from 'Blank Planet' has a guitar solo by Alex Lifeson from Rush, and has some superb drumming by the mighty Gavin Harrison. Well worth a reaction video.

at some time you will get calls for other SW/PT work like "Routine". When you get around to that, be aware that the song needs a warning. You have been warned! There are several in that category.... again, as always, genius & beautiful.

Great Lake Swimmers ( maybe Various Stages or The Talking Wind to start)
Toad the Wet Sprocket ( Fly From Heaven and Crowing are 2 of my faves)
VAST (Touched, Flames, I Don't Have Anything)
Our Lady Peace aka OLP (Is Anybody Out There, Somewhere Out There)
Live, lead singer kills it! (Some great songs by Live: Lightning Crashes, I Alone, Run to the Water, Turn my Head, Overcome, The Dolphin's Cry)
And I call these next 2 bands prog space rock, ha, just how the music makes me trance out, ha! :
    Haken

The four per-cent gayness in me is truly in love with Nick. The other ninety-six per-cent is drooling over La Mejicana, some, but mostly over my keyboard, sadly. You make a nice pair and I enjoy your content immensely. I sometimes feel like the kid I was, way back then; when watching most of yer videos. It's so enjoyable to see people half my age get exited from music that's sometimes half-a-century old. Thanks is but a small word and "thank you" doesn't cover the feelings I experience through your videos. But that's all I have to offer right now, my thanks.

Great album but the 2 standout tracks on here Russian on Ice and Shesmovedon. And for some real querkiness try Last Chance to Evacuate Planet Earth.

Not knowing what you know or not know Soundgarden is another band worth checking out. I haven't seen anyone else react to their song "4th of July" but it's a real "grinder" (as in through the meat grinder) of a song and if you choose to listen you'll know what I mean.

We’ve been meaning to do some Soundgarden; thanks for the suggestion! We know very little about them so that’s helpful! :) - Lex

definitely studio version of ‘anethetize’ rather than the live version...live just isn’t as good and doesn’t include Alex’s solo
