    Tom, while discussing his admiration for Charles Bukowski: "I'm not very smart. I don't read a lot." Several minutes later he is quoting Voltaire. Ya gotta love this guy!

      I was about to make the same comment. Not wanting to put airs is a good thing...nobody likes a pompous ass...but someone who appreciates Bukowski, Serling, and Voltaire is definitely no slouch in the brains department.

  • @michaelgregory2231
    @michaelgregory2231 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for some overdue spotlight on the humble yet colorful 6th note. I remember it giving me literal goosebumps when the guitarist in WAR just parked on it on the outro of his solo for "Slippin' Into Darkness". Michael Landau also uses it to great effect at times. The entire sub-genre of Minneapolis funk rests on the minor 6 and minor 13 chord (which they got from James Brown's "The Big Payback". Your analogy of the stages of a rocket dropping off to reveal the essential element of the core is brilliant. It is our universal human experience. And +1 for your spot on profile of Paul Franklin, the human being. He is "salt of the earth".

  • @TheFranzek

    Hey Tom, thanks for doing this whole thing. Seriously my favorite thing on TH-cam. It's nice to see authenticity wherever possible. I think you've got a great show concept going. Instead of The Voice it could be called The Fingers, or That Fingered Show....or just Fingered. I too am a bit crazy.
    Ever heard of Bill Nelson? I thought you"d like his note selections. Btw, anyone who knows Bukowski, loves Rod Serling and uses the word naivete(Nay ev a tay) is NOT stupid. Anyway, I loved Metal Fatigue by Holdsworth. Anyway, rock on and thanks, man. My vote for round one was Emerson but the use of the nose by Luke wins round 2 for me.

    Tom, I've been playing for 37 years - not anywhere near your level but have been in some band or project almost all of that time. I had just started going back to the wood shedding the basics a little over a month ago to up my game to something more respectable during this down time. It's so hard to find anyone discussing the stuff that actually matters like you are doing right now. Then I find your channel. I never comment on these things but your videos are so on the mark and important, I wanted to give you a shout out and say thanks. You've solidified many things, and inspired me immensely. Keep up the great work!
    And I'll soak up anything you have to say about feel and groove because without that, it's kind of useless in my humble opinion - take care.

    Tom is like a laid back slightly alcoholic uncle of yours who kinda gave up on life at some point in his mid 30’s and somehow found music (and his smoking hot wife) as a means to make it day by day. All the while hammering out golden nuggets of sonic perfection. And I LOVE him for it!! Your attitude is exactly what I have been looking for in a teacher. No pretentiousness and 100% truth. Diggin the lessons . Your approach to playing and your open mindedness to music is awesome . Not sure mindedness is a word but you know what I mean . But also loving your stories . I will share one for you .Went to a country show with ex wife years ago . She was always going to my rock shows so I agreed to this one . I liked hearing good live music no matter the genre . It was Sawyer Brown I think . Opening band was a Beatles tribute band . Was thinking it was a local band . They were dressed in suits with mop tops like early Beatles .They kicked ass. After their set they pulled of jackets and their wigs and went straight into Sawyer Brown show. Everyone was surprised . Not my fav concert but way high on cool scale . They were great

    You don't need to change a thing, maestro - and not to stroke your ego, but you are easily one of the most authentic musicians I've ever heard.
    It's really, really easy for young players to forget that music is about how a person sounds, how they can play a supporting role in a group, and what they're able to deliver to the audience. Once you've got that squared away, then you can start worrying about production value, or how you look. Around here we say, "It's all about the hang."
