What I really like about this video is that you posted a previous video asking what the point of the step sequencer was, then learned from people’s responses, and finally posted a really useful video sharing your new understanding. This to me is why this community is what TH-cam should be all about. Thanks!

Thanks, this was an interesting video. I have asked all the channels on MPC tutorials I have found on TH-cam if someone could do a deep dive into Pocket operator and MPC step sequencer. I was having troubles getting started even with the set-up, so would be super grateful if you should upload something like that!!!
The step sequencer automation is useful for the more precise cases where you want a particular parameter change at a particular step, e.g. panning a hi hat or something like that. It's similar to the parameter locks of Elektron sequencers. However, for the vast majority of cases, I find the automation write toggle and twisting a knob to be SO much more intuitive quick and musical. I really only use the step sequencer to make minor adjustments like if something doesn't sound right, similar to how I'd draw automation curves in a DAW. But it definitely isn't my go to method for automation since the MPC is so great with knobs and real-time music making.
The process of learning how to finger drum has been slow going and frustrating. This gives me an alternative and reason not to sell my gear. Thank you.
In your previous step sequencer video I remarked that I had not found a use case for it, but your video led me to experiment and I did find some use: as you illustrate in the present video, the step sequencer is a super fast way to input the basics such four-on-the-floor kick drum etc. Since those are going to be super regular grid-aligned, putting it in with the step sequencer is more straightforward than finger-drumming and then timing correct and then adjusting. So now, step sequencer for the basic infrastructure, then back to drum & adjust to layer the funky stuff on top ! Thanks for the inspiration. I'm not quite sophisticated enough yet to do much with parameters - but I take note of that aspect !

Can step lengths be adjusted on a per pad level? For instance; can the kick only have 9 steps in the measure, the snare 6 steps etc etc. Arturia, Elektron, Roland and Korg all have sequencers in their groove boxes but I can’t seem to find out if akai has implemented this or if I simply just don’t know how to access it.
@@FreeBeat I’m not sure what that means. A linear timeline doesn’t help create poly metric and cycling rhythm. You have a model cycles, so you should know what I’m talking about. It seems weird to me that the MPC can do all these things EXCEPT that? Doesn’t that just seem to be strange?
@@Rocco_Renzetti Yeah I know, I meant that you could create the illusion of a cycling rhythm by sequencing your drum part out over the entire course of your track in order to make it feel like the drums were in a different meter, but granted that would be a huge pain to do.
@@FreeBeat oddly enough it could be the difference between me keeping this thing or selling it in favour of the Roland MC707. There is literally NO info anywhere I can find on the internet about this particular function (or lack there of) and when I purchased this I just sorta assumed it could do so within its countless number of amenities.
Sequencign four on the floor is realy fast and easy and so much better than the ugly sounding metronome. It would allow you to do say a techno jam live... just punch in the four on the floor sequence, press play and then you could eitehr sequence in the rest with SHIFT-PAD or overdub with some finger drumming.
@@FreeBeat Would be cool to see more people using MPC one for live stuff without using metronome and without stopping and starting and talking. Like they do when setting up a techno tune with an 808 then 303. They just start punching in the sequence, one by one as it plays. :)

Can step lengths be adjusted on a per pad level? I'm honestly not sure. Due to the linear timeline though, you could sequence out everything just how you wanted.
