Very basic stuff here, I've covered so much advanced stuff in the past so it's time to go back over some basics to help new users and beginners to MPC.
That looping feature where you loop a very small part of a sample in order to get it to play out through the entire duration of the bars you have set is awesome! I knew something like this was possible, but never had any clue on how to do it. You know how many times I've sat down at my MPC X and have wasted hours and hours of time trying to get a sample that I've chopped up to fit with my project all for me to get frustrated and delete the entire project? I don't even want to admit how often that's happened! We're officially off to the races! Thanks a ton!
I've been searching "advanced tutorials" and such on YT and the stupid algorithm just gives me all the 'influencer' cook up type videos which are basically just ads for the MPC. Not hating but I'm beyond the basics and trying to find more videos like this one is difficult. I randomly found your channel from a random comment on one of earlier said videos. Really glad I found you, this video alone showed me how to properly utilize the "from bpm" feature. Previously I only thought that was to double check the bpm of the sample, and then I would timestretch the sample to suit. This method and others in the video will really help me get the timing down on my samples. Thank you! Def going to go thru your videos and see what else I can learn
thanks! sometimes the basics are kind of overlooked or lost. i miss the old school sounds which were done in this manner due to the limits of the technology of the time. imo this has a lot more character than having everything locked to bpm and perfect.
It's fun beat matching and locking it to the beat. It's satisfying. On Acid Pro, it's just drag and drop. That's how I started in 2002. Now I use the X and I like working a little harder. I use warp mode and play with both stretch and bpm and semi.
Im a newbee to all of it , and was wondering how to sync a sample to seq bpm. I always thought i had to warp it and mess with time stretching , but this is much easier to understand for me.
I've been warping my samples and I don't like the way the sound quality is reduced. Also, it's not always straight forward; sometimes you have to warp and timestretch, and usually you have to find the right bpm by ear which is time consuming and an enemy to creativity. This was very helpful 🙏
Nice I really appreciate your videos. I’m a new subscriber and got my first MPC a few months ago. Your vids have been beyond helpful in learning and understanding the MPC One so thank you 🙏
Really useful lesson for me this, some really good little pieces of information I needed. Thank you! You’ve earned a subscriber. Something that is always a pain for me is - say I sample one piece of music as one layer, then grab a sample from a totally other piece of music, what is the best way to match the songs up in terms of key? Matching them up rhythmically is one thing (as you’ve demonstrated here) but what about when you also have key to contend with? Do you have any videos on this?
I don’t have any specific videos on that particular subject. There’s many ways to do this including workarounds and alternatives to reliance on pitch shifting etc. You’d have to book some lesson time with me, I don’t have time to explain all the ways here as it’s also very dependent on the material in question. My email contact details are in the video description.

Tubedigga, I got to this video from your Pioneer DJ DJS-1000 video. Q1; Is the Pioneer like using Ableton Live but in hardware? I'm looking for that function in a hardware sampler where I can change tempo and have audio loops follow. Q2 Is the MPC your sampler of choice for live triggered via an SPD-SX, for example or would the Pioneer DJ DJS-1000 Standalone DJ Sampler be the better choice.
The DJS1000, the MPC, Maschine Plus and Akai Force all have the ability to play synchronised loops that somewhat stay in time. I say somewhat, because with all of them, the algorithm used to stretch the audio introduces artefacts which I personally consider to sound unprofessional. I prefer to chop and re-sequence to achieve this. But if you want a cheap and quick fix machine that does that kind of thing, all of the aforementioned machines do it in a similar way. Therefore I would choose the machine that is best overall, not just at that. For me it would be either MPC or Maschine Plus. The DJS1000 is a good unit but too limited in other areas for me. My best advice is try all of them if you can, keep the one you click with and return the ones you don't get on with in general. The MPC would be best for live triggering IMO.
No, they are two completely different things. The tail feature is a very simple way to add a short loop at the end of a sample to give it a smooth fade, whereas looping in this video is proper sample looping - pad 16 in the sample editor allows you to loop a sample to preview it so you know it loops correctly. If you start and end points are off then the MPC wont be able to calculate the BPM properly. it needs a specific amount of beats, even if it isn't a full bar or amount of bars.
No, BPM can only be set at the sequence level which governs the tracks within it. If you’re hoping to do polyrhythms you can set each track to have its own beat count, but as said they will still have the same tempo as dictated by the sequence.
quick question, when you do the legato trick, are you still looping the end part with loop lock off or that doesnt matter anymore because its gonna close the gap together

Hi Tubedigger. Great videos and wondering if you can help. Considering the Patreon too if you have one. I'm trying to get only 1 or two beats to play in a bar to play for a sequence. So the sequence only has 1 or two beats. Do you have a video explaining how to do this? It's to do breaks etc.
Do you.mean set the sequence length to only 1 or 2 beats long rather than one bar or more? If so you can set the LENGTH in beats in the TRACK area on the main page. It will play for an amount of beats separately from the main sequence length.

I'm wondering if it's because they've maybe moved it around a bit since they've done a ton of updates since you shared this video? I keep watching your videos and once I feel I fully understand everything, I go to hop on my MPC X and suddenly everything seems to change and I can't find DETECT BPM.
Sorry to keep bugging you Tube.. one last question.. (probably more on the horizon but this one is buggin me for sure) Why is DETECT KEY DETECT BPM AND FROM BPM all greyed out and don't do anything when I click on them? I'm trying to make this flute sample that is in F# Major go down to F Minor but all those buttons are grey and do nothing when clicked? @@TUBEDIGGA
Hi Great Channel Tubedigga, am trying to change timing of a drum loop, but i dont have the detect button in my sample editer, only the just from BPM button, but when i try to match it. It just defaults to 120bpm if i set my sequence at 85 bpm then try to match ,it just defaults the sequence back to 120 bpm, am using an MPC LIVE 2 RUNNING 2.10 FIRMWARE UPDATE. the from bpm box has the bars and tuning but the BPM doesnt ever change from 120BPM, if i match to sequence it defaults to 120BPM Thanks !
Listening on my headphones I can hear the bass “thump” when you mash those buttons, 😆. I kept thinking that somebody was coming upstairs over here. #bass #hearing_test #dawless #Mpc_One
On the MAIN PAGE make sure it says SEQUENCE below the BPM - if it says MAIN then the entire project and all sequences in it will be locked to 120BPM or whatever BPM you have chosen to be your default tempo .
I don’t know what you mean by your work space. The MPC doesn’t automatically detect the bpm. This video clearly explains how the MPC can detect the bpm but only after you trim a sample to an exact amount of beats. You provide that information to the MPC so it can accurately calculate the bpm. The algorithm is dividing duration/time by beats (information which you provide) to assess the beats per minute.
Great video as always! The only thing I don't understand is, how do you know when a chopped sample has the duration of exactly one bar? Just by hearing/feeling or are there other tricks to chop it exactly to one bar? I can see myself doing it just by hearing for drum breaks, but when there is only a melody/vocal without any beat behind it I find it rather difficult to chop it correctly to one bar. I'm still pretty new, but I'd appreciate any tips in this regard!
That’s just an experience thing, listening closely and counting. It doesn’t come overnight, I’ve been doing this for nearly 30 years, DJing, sampling, experimenting. Newcomers need to be aware that things are 1000 times easier, cheaper and more convenient these days. Learning the long and hard way gives you a deeper understanding of why things are they way they are, do what they do and how they do it etc.
I am struggling to align vocals with the drum beat :/ :/ when I detect the bpm it says 58.27 and I've set the sequence to 120 so I need the vocals to be 60... But I what ever I try, it's off beat all the time. Ffs
Theres a number of things you can try because the vocal sample may be drifting over time. You can edit the vocal sample in a DAW to make sure it's perfectly timed to 60BPM using Ableton etc to warp it cleanly. Or you can try and use the pad warp feature in MPC standalone to shift it so it syncs better. Or you can try and chop the vocal up into slices if it isn't too long, and record/trigger each slice on the grid so you have more control over each phrase. Failing that, email me and book a lesson. Email in description 👍
They have updated the firmware a couple of times since this video was uploaded. The only major thing that is different related to this video is the from bpm feature has been moved to a sub page that slides over by pressing the small white arrow on the right hand side of the screen in sample edit mode.
The time stretching on the MPC blows!! Most of the time it detects the BPMs incorrectly. What do you do when you know the bpm of your sample but the MPC wont accept the correct BPM? For instance I have a two bar drum loop that I can tempo tap to recognize its around 110 bpm but the MPC insists that the BPM is 125. I want to use the time stretch to lower the bpm without altering the pitch so I tell the MPC that the bpm is in fact 110 but the results don't make any sense. Either Im an idiot or this is the most unintuitive mamajama ever. Oh shnap am I going to have to read the manual?!?
If the loop is incorrectly chopped (not an exact amount of bars), or the timing drifts significantly (like samples from old records/songs) then the MPC will struggle to correctly calculate the BPM. Your sample has to be a perfect loop in other words.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thanx TD. Yeah you were right. The loop wasn't chopped as cleanly as I thought. I was able to get it working. I ended up using the Process button to tell the MPC what the current BPM of the loop was and what I wanted it to be changed to.
i tell you this. The mpc live timestretch is 100X better than the mpc 2500 and sp 303 piece of shit timestretch (you can even replicate the 303 and s950 timestretch on the live if thats your thing though 🤷🏼♂️)
