Amy Lee has been quoted saying the song is about losing the comfort of sorrow. Lithium is a mood stabilizer that would take away the sorrow that the writer holds inside and she is not ready to let go of it. She has lived with sorrow so long that losing it now would be like losing a part of herself. That is what the whole refrain is about: "Lithium, Don't want to lock myself up inside, Lithium, Don't want to forget what it feels without, Lithium, I want to stay in love with my sorrow." Lee's lyrics are often metaphorical and the words consist of double meanings. It's about her inner feelings toward herself.
Lithium is an element of the periodic table. Also a lubricant. Useful stuff.

I think the song talking about people who looking for happiness but in a negative way, even Amy Lee's makeup and the pale face in the video represent a consumed and weak person who took a lot of drugs

It comes as regular tablets or slow-release tablets (lithium carbonate). It also comes as a liquid that you swallow (lithium citrate).

Lithium is the third element. It's a metal. It's used in batteries. It's used as anti-psychotic in medicine. It's used as a medicine to reduce damage from exposure to nuclear radiation. Pure lithium reacts immediately to oxygen in the air so you wouldn't find it lying around, it can be in a pure state underground but when it exposed to the air it changes, I don't remember the change specifically it's been decades since chemistry class.
I love Amy Lee her voice the words it grabs you with the first note it grabs you by the heart and the emotions that at times you can't help but cry listening . I just can't explain what this song makes you feel it's just an incredible song.

Various lithium salts, most commonly simple lithium carbonate, have been used as mood stabilizers since as far back as the 1870s.
Its effects stop you from going into extremes of emotions. You become a bit numb to everything, which isn't exactly what you want to achieve, but in many cases of disorders, such as major depression(the one with suicidal tendencies), schizophrenia, or bipolar/manic depressive disorder, it is preferable to the alternative.
Of course, when on it, you do realize you should be feeling a certain way about things, but you don't, but, as you are on it, it doesn't really bother you that much. It does feel like a cage, but if that's what it takes for you to be safe to be around others and for them to be around you? That's a small price to pay.
This song is about her little relative not liking her/secretly jealous of her that is a few themes that runs throughout the album.... The album cover symbolises their love/hate relationship.... In other words: She wants love from her and is willing to move on if need be, that is The Open Door in a nutshell.... There is more to it but you have to listen to the album to learn more.... The songs are very cryptic if you have not been in said situation.... If you have, then, the whole album will be understood....

Lithium is a psychiatric medication (mood stabilizer) that usually is used for bipolar and major depression. My ex was on it for a good while, but it just kind of deadens your psyche so you don't "feel as much". Which is what she is getting at, that she wants to keep the pain and sorrow because it makes her feel alive.

Lithium was a go-to antidepressant and is very effective at it, however due to it's narrow therapeutic index (the range a drug goes from beneficial to lethal) it fell out of favor and SSRI and TCA kinda took the forefront though now lithium is kinda coming back into more common usage... Medicine, it's a wild place...

I never even heard of that song, first I thought they maybe did a cover of Nirvana's song Lithuim...
From what I have gathered is that Amy lost a sister when she was young. This could have easily triggered all sorts of problems for her and it wouldn't surprise me if she was prescribed Lithium at some time. All speculation, but this could be a song from her personal experience with the subject matter at hand. A lot of hurt and sorrow and acting up can result from this type of trauma and parents can easily run out of options and turn to a doctor for help. But as with this drug and a good chunk of other drugs, you are managing symptoms and not really tackling the real issue that is the sorrow of losing a loved one and the fact that you have to work through it or you will be managing the symptoms for the rest of your life. Drugs can help you manage from day to day, but you still need to work on the cause of the problems. In any case, Amy Lee delivers a powerful song here and it resonates through the years...

Lithium is a drug/element used to battle depression and anxiety. It doesn't work for everyone. The song is kind of about trying to get away from it. Escaping what the pharma does, even though helpful maybe in the short term.... the long term solution is just to heal. Be alone and dream and realize who you are.

This is kinda about the guy she was with (Seether)...he was too busy either or both taking drugs or alcohol.
He was maybe not comfortable or confident or something when he was sober and only interacted with her in a loving way whe he was under the influence...hence the line 'didn't drink enough to say you love me'.
I suppose he was kinda cold and emotionless when sober.
