the market is bad but its still not terrible. this guy is a numbers dude and smart. if he can figure out tha market based on freight he will be fine. alot of times its alot better to get that load for 1200-1500 that is like 600-700 miles and drop first thing tha next day instead of taking a load for $4200 going to florida and not being able to get a load coming out n running cheap if u stay anywhere on tha coast

I live in Oklahoma, we're friendly folks here. But you're correct. The DOT are assholes. I tried "for hire" dump trucking, and they wouldn't leave be alone, they stopped me almost every time they saw me. Never got a moving violation, but they made me so nervous I found some other things to do.

Also from what I’ve seen and heard you might not be able to negotiate the price but you can ask for more fuel surcharges. Plus Landstar doesn’t get 35% of your fuel surcharges so you are better off with more money on that end

Been waiting for this video. Sounds good as your are just getting started at LandStar. Lonestar Texas Ranger hauls for LandStar and he had explained the pay. He had mentioned he sometimes could get an increase in the Fuel Surcharge pay, but not the Linehaul. LandStar has a pretty good fuel discount program so that helps. What MPG does your truck get?

Right, the DIRECT loads are non-negotiable. The rate listed is the full amount being paid by the shipper, usually a contracted rate. However all the other loads, the non-direct loads are negotiable. In fact, the rate posted is just a guess, something the listing agent thinks he may be able to get from the prime agent. They are posting loads from other load boards. Negotiate away!

IMO I think especially right now you can’t go wrong with Landstar. I’ve been doing some heavy research for the past year and still haven’t pulled the trigger yet but if and when I do I’ll go with Landstar. A lot of people can’t get over that 35% but you have to figure in what benefits come with that plus when I was in Louisville at MATS I looked at a few load boards and Landstar had more loads in the south east than Truckstop had in the whole country.

If you have time watch some of the Blue Ribbon podcasts. They put some good info out especially for the newer guys. One of the things they teach which I like is set a minimum daily rate. They ignore the rpm and shoot for $1400 a day and around $2000 for a weekend load. Try and set a goal of $7500 to $8000 a week in LS gross revenue. I prefer not to do short loads. I try for longer loads that allow my to be in that 7 to 8 thousand a week
    Also you can negotiate. M
Not all agents will do it, but some will go back to the broker with higher offers. Doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try.
