i don't understand why they mount them so securely as this just makes them easier to penetrate. surely it is smarter just to mount them up into position with very little support behind them so the bullet just pushes the glass back instead of piercing through.
jhanks2012 if it could just be knocked down it would kind of defeat the purpose of the bullet proof glass. Most "criminals" only tote concealable small caliber hand guns. If you saw someone walk into a bank or convenience store with a .50 caliber BMG, I think the button would be pressed to call the police before he finished getting the gun out of the car.

The full force wasn't applied because the glass panel moved when 50 cal hit it as some force was used to accelerate it. The glass should be stationary for full effect
Agreed, it us was mounted in a vehicle or structure, Also results would probably be different on a larger and not sample piece, integrity may have been compromised with can insert in the glass. Yet looks like it would only be a very temporal barrier after first hit, I forget a kit of my higher science from college.

As he pointed out, it would've held up better if it hadn't been structurally compromised, even though that should be common sense. The anchoring, though, voids the test entirely.

Was thinking the same thing. Glass on vehicles and buildings are under much more pressure since they are locked in place. Would have caused more penetration for the 0.50 cal, but I don't think it would be enough to break it.
Although, if someone standing/sitting behind the glass were to be hit by that glass block, would'nt they still die?

The .50 cal round didn't go through, partly because the bullet proof glass wasn't tied down, and a lot of the rounds energy was wasted in pushing glass backwards, instead of penetrating it. If you haven't already done so, you should make another video like this one, but with the glass tied down. Otherwise great video.

If the glass was bigger than that small square it would be less easily damaged (I.e. stronger), because there would be a greater area for the energy from the round to be dissipated within. Ballistic glass doesn’t work by being especially stronger than regular glass, it works by there being more of it within which to dissipate the energy of rounds.

because of newton's 3rd law and momentum, the impact period of the bullet with the glass was longer, since the glass wasn't stable like on a vehicle or building. Thus the power and force of the impact was lower.
