The best part is that Pictionary on a Dpad sounds awful.
    Player 2: is it stairs?
Player one: Yes. It is always stairs.

Props for putting in the effort. I've long reckoned that the biggest thing that held back standard SMS sound was its frankly inexplicable inability to hit anything you could reasonably label as "bass." An even bigger deal than the fact that all of the waveforms are fundamentally square waves. Of course on the other hand, there's something deeply fascinating about hearing that ancient chip being put through its paces alongside the Mega Drive's synth, in tunes like _Thunder Force 4's_ level 1.

Thank you! For this remix I didn't use the periodic noise bass, but you can check some other remixes I did with it, but I guess a better example would be the Alien 3 soundtrack by Matt Furniss. As for the square wave-only problem, you can actually try to make a different sound using two channels together, like I did for my Legend of Kage remix, but that's even more limiting than using only three channels to make the periodic noise bass.

@@chirinea I'll be honest about that technique. It's a neat trick but does require more CPU power than simply poking at registers on a per-note basis. But because of the ratio between on and off for a given waveform, it has about as much punch as 1-bit "pulse" music like Tim Follin's mixing routines on the ZX Spectrum.
I do wonder just how much bass you could get out of the technique, though. It ought to be possible to just go all the way and maintain a square wave, except at whatever frequency you happen to need, including the low frequencies that the chip can't normally give.

As someone who programs 8-bit systems and plays piano, I compare the SMS to sawing off almost 1/3 off the left side of my piano. It really was unfortunate, as everything has this "toy instrument" quality to it, since you can't add bass without sacrificing percussion on the noise channel. It's really unfortunate that Sega didn't offer the FM expansion outside of Japan. If they did, and even spent money to just build it in like they did with the Japanese Master System (which could wield both sound chips simultaneously) maybe it would have done a bit better. Even if Nintendo had some anti-competitive licensing deals going on in North America.

Would looped noise have helped the bass?

Probably, I heard a version using it. But the drums are pretty busy, so it woud be hard to balance that too.
