I am not even remotely kidding when I say Lower Brinstar is one of my all time favorites from the gaming industry. This is so beautifully done. It actually gave me goosebumps.
It's funny... Upper Brinstar and lower Norfair get all the attention, but Lower Brinstar and Upper Norfair are the tracks I go to more than any others.
This is freaking awesome. No offense to others, but all remixes of Super Metroid soundtracks I found on YT, being good in their own ways, miss something important in the original ones.
This is such an amazing rendition, stays very true to the original version in terms of ominous percussion, which really adds to the atmosphere of the original game. The instrument choice in this rendition is spot-in imo. Synths for keyboard, and a well emulated shakuhachi really cements the atmosphere the original was going for. Honestly, I’d be really happy if you guys did more science stuff, to put it simply
You definitely hit the original spot on. This sounds just like a high quality version of it. Very nicely done. It's still amazing how a song can be beautiful but also ominous at the same time.
This is a greater level of quality & professionalism than I would expect from Nintendo if they made a full price remake of Super Metroid today. Words cannot describe how deep to my core this hits.
Thanks! As a Metroid fan myself, I'm glad these versions resonate with others. As for Nintendo, can only hope they won't shut me down for making covers of their stuff...

Thanks! I try to stick very close to the originals, but I generally reinterpret the sounds according to indirect cues or references to the aesthetics of the era. For example, to get the reference to process the sounds in this version, I took inspiration from Vangelis' "Antartica" and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence" , two beautiful soundtrack themes that evoke a sense of desolation, with sparse sounds and huge ambiances, which I thought would fit Lower Brinstar pretty well. For more accurate versions, but in the same vibe of remastering, you should probably also check out the Super Metroid Ost restorations on The Brickster's channel, which are pretty good in their own right. @@Synt5 That's a very neat approach. I myself tried for some time to remake some tracks, exactly with the same feel, but as if they were played live with "real" instruments. I checked your suggestion, and the tracks are also really really good sounding as far as I heard for now, thanks!

Phenomenally done. The spirit of the original communicated through a crisp and dreamy 80's sci-fi/fantasy motif. Smooth. Spellbinding. Only needs harder hitting bass, especially on the note after the rest.
@@Synt5 You know what? I take back what I said about the bass. As it turns out my other sound system just sucked 😂 Also, please consider "The Waterfall" from the Super Castlevania soundtrack!
Yeah, I've been thinking about producing a couple more Metroid remakes. But I'd have to outdo myself to make a decent Lower Norfair though, with all those choirs and orchestal instruments... Thanks!
Hey there. The sound source was a white noise generated by the sound module (the black box above, Behringer model D, a clone of a Moog Minimoog). I used the Beatstep (the other box with the lights pads) to trigger the sound repeatedly in 16th notes (every light signals a new "trigger"). Later during mixing I shaped the sound further during mixing with a tape echo and a decay automation to achieve that sense of space. I choose to do it that way because it sounded the best. It might be quite intimidating info at first, I know, but if you have a basic keyboard, maybe you can achieve a similar result by using a hand clap sound (usually part of a drum set), and feed that into lots of reverb or echo (if your keyboard has onboard effects), or play it and it with an arpeggiator. Cheers!
This is amazing, I've been looking for something like this for quite some time. If you were able to recreate all of the tracks, somebody could probable make it into a romhack to include cd quality tracks. This plus the widescreen romhack would make the definitive version to replay Super Metroid.

@Garyth Mardellis I just wanted to let you know that I've moved forward with the "obscure tracks" idea. I've just posted the first cover in what I suspect will become a series of videos - a song from Super Binball Behind the Mask for the SNES. In time, when I figure out a good approach to take on 8-bit titles, I should try the Quantum Fighter Stage 1 you suggested, as well as other NES and Master System songs I've been flirting with. @@Synt5 That's great man! I'm stoked to hear you're moving into obscure ost territory. I would honestly be thrilled to listen to your take on a quantum fighter ost, one of my favorite 8 bit soundtracks for sure. Thanks for keeping me posted and I look forward to what is coming!
@@garythmardellis1289 The problem with 8-bit osts is that you don't get the timbral cues you'd normally get from sample-based systems like the SNES, so you have to rely entirely on the music to find good production templates. The Quantum Fighter is a cool challenge: it is surely 80's sounding, so I am already having a few ideas. For example, that "drop" in QF's Stage 1 music with that low, sustained bass note right before the music repeats itself reminds me of a similar drop in The Bolshoi's 1986 single Sunday Morning at 3:43 (or 3:40 in the ext version). So I keep collecting references such as this one until I feel I have enough to guide my versions. Cheers!
Cara! você me fez se emocionar com este som perfeito, essa musica e uma das que eu mais amo, estou muito emocionado com seu trabalho, está de PARABÉNS!
Thanks! In time, I plan to do all the main stage themes, that one should be included as well, maybe as a medley with the more tense "Space Pirates appear" theme. Cheers!
Yeah, that one shakuhachi... So, when recording the guiding tracks for the video, I used the JV-2080. But later during mixing I kept the midi and replaced the sound with the shakuhachi from the E-mu Proteus 3 module, using an Emu sample bank from Digital Sound Factory. I applied EQ and reverb, but what you hear is essentially E-mu P3. The thing is, E-mu has a long history with shakuhachis since the Emulator II (= the Enigma flute, Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer, etc), but that specific sample from the Proteus 3 has a different nuance to it. When choosing the samples to be used in the game, composers had to take into account the size of each sample, so they used a very short flute sample (taken from the Proteus 1/2), and programmed the modulation and volume expression for the melody in Lower Brinstar. In the Proteus 3, the shak sample is much longer, and already contained much of the same vibrato and volume expression that the original flute sound in SM was trying to convey via programming. However, despite the Proteus 3 module was already available in 1994, it would not be a viable option to be used in the game due to the size of the sample. Since my version is basically an exercise of speculative interpretation, I thought it would be a perfect fit to expand on the supposed original intention for Lower Brinstar.
@@Synt5 Wow. This is honestly one of the most awesome and insightful comments I've ever read on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and information! Your attention to detail and creative expression here is epic.

Thanks! In time, I plan to do all the main stage themes, that one should be included as well, maybe as a medley with the more tense "Space Pirates appear" theme. Cheers!
@@Synt5 Cool, though i hope it is it's own thing separate from the Space Pirates Appear theme. Regardless i look forward to it!
superbe travail
merci!
Great!
Sois unos genios.
Wow! This is incredible. What do you use for the flute/shakuhachi sound? It is absolutely astounding
