    To all those who are confused in this question, about strong and weak field donor ligand (specially NH3)
    Actually, NH3 is a middle field ligand, which is neither a clear strong feild donor nor a weak feild donor, although it behaves as strong feild in most of the cases but there are some exceptions where it will behave as weak feild, Co+2 Octahedral complexes are one of example of it. (Refer to Inorganic Chemistry by James E Huhyee or you can also refer: coordination chemistry by Ajai Kumar)
    This question was asked in GATE 2017, so if you have doubt with the answer you can check official GATE website.

      Niloy, I know many students have confusion in it.
      Always remember, NH3 behaves as strong feild ligand with Co+3 not with Co+2
      There are many exceptions in Coordination Compounds and I'll definitely discuss them in my upcoming videos.

    Hello sir, in this question you said NH3 is a weak Ligand thus no pairing due to this, in spectrochemical series NH3 is more towards a region of strong ligands, infact it is placed after 14 weak ligands in the series and after NH3 only 9 strong ligands are there then why it is weak. Kindly tell which ligands would be stronger and cause the formation of low field complexes. Thank you.

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is not like that, in spectrochemical series upto NH3 it is weak feild ligand and after that it is strong feild ligands. Now NH3 is not weak feild in all cases there are certain cases in which it will act as strong feild too. But for this particular question it acts as weak feild ligand.
      Refer James E Huhyee for standard spectrochemical series.

    If the ligand is strong field ligand like CN then what is the csfe. Please explain

    • @AllBoutChemistry
      @AllBoutChemistry  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If ligand would be strong feild like CN it will cause pairing and configuration will be t2g^6 and eg¹
      Now calculate CFSE it will be around -1.8(delta)+3P bcoz here 3 electrons are paired and it was caused by ligand that's why

    • @palashghosh4379
      @palashghosh4379 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      For low spin....
      the cfse is = -1.8∆+1P
      Because only one electron gets paired due to strong ligand field..
      Other two are paired due to hund's rule

      Srivani Vudagandla,
      Just bcoz you are unaware of this thing, this doesn't mean that the one who is telling about that is wrong. Read some standard books and then comment.
      If you don't know about it, then NH3 is ligand which is kept at middle of spectrochemical series, due to its sigma donating capability is not very strong, and more importantly, it is neither a pi acceptor non a pi donor. Now it depends on metal centre that how it will behave, here with Co+2 it will behave as weak feild. (Reference: Inorganic Chemistry by James E Huhyee)
