    Robert, thanks so much for doing this video and thanks to the whole Fully Charged team. Fantastic work as always and what a wonderfully produced video even lacking the mounting equipment for the cameras. I actually prefer the feel of hand held in this video over the static mounted cams.

      @Dr. Michael Mcrackpot Farty Brown Oh man, please do a bit of home work :), everything is other way around. Radar can see through snow, fog and rain. Lidar can't as it operates close to visible wavelength. Physics never gets "old", radar is perfect for what Tesla is using it. Watch Tesla autonomy day to get a bit of understanding.

      @Dr. Michael Mcrackpot Farty Brown: I guess future will tell, but the present would tend to disagree with you. Lidar is multiple times more expensive and it is yet to prove it adds anything meaningful to a setup like what Teslas are already equipped with. Please check Tesla's FSD Analyst day (a few days ago) which addresses this very subject.

From picking up the kids at school to 3,000 mi cross country journeys, it has worked beautifully and is simultaneously calming and exciting to be in.

But it is more unclear to me how they do the other things.

      I do not own a Tesla. But I've heard from some Model 3 owners who previously owned either BMW 3 series, Audi A4, or Mercedez Benz C Class, and they all pointed out that the Model 3 is just as good (and better in some ways). Everyone seems to love how that car drives. I'm hoping to have a test drive soon, in order to discover for myself.

    • @vlight8558
      @vlight8558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@erikengheim1106 - LR AWD, it feels like you are driving a part of the future, or more likely you have come back in time and just driving around with everyone in dino juice combustion engines, huffing, puffing,, when I look under the hood in our other car I can't believe all the gubbins and stuff, it's so complex and just looks ancient!! This car is a different beast, it's got a much much simpler drivetrain, which feels way more solid in it's tolerances. There is no starting it, yes everything works via the screen, but it feels completely intuitive as it's like an extension of your smartphone, the screen is big, informative and fast. The car feels super solid, tight, silent. The acceleration is just amazing, you basically have supercar (in powerband) instant pulling power, no noise, no fuss, 4x traction, if you're merging onto a road and a car is trying to block you, you just move forward in front of it, it's like they are in slow motion, I used to have this experience on motorbikes, but I would still need to be in my powerband, that's what this car feels like a decent motorbike in it's powerband (Supersports bikes now, will leave basically any tesla in the dust, but they will huff n puff a lot to do it)...So the instant speed is super addictive, but also the one foot driving, as soon as you let off the throttle (this is dynamic, based on how much you release) the car slows down rapidly, this is charging the battery, the regen is strong, it's like 50-90% braking in normal driving, you can drive with more confidence because you don't need to switch your foot, you just release and the car slows down rapidly. The car sticks to the road, it's very stable, and you can power through corners, it will handle the torque split. The other I'm loving is the efficiency as I get older I care more about this, and this car driven normally is just really efficient, can get below 200Wh/mi (which would be 375 miles on a full charge) - it's definitely possible to hit the 310 or more in normal driving, but it's hard to not have fun with it, so those numbers will drop if you're going fast. So you're driving this silent, instant fast and very simple regen brakes, solid machine. We're raving about it, because it's like nothing we have experienced, it's really a part of the future available now....I agree with adage, 'Beware driving a Tesla, it will ruin ICE cars forever'

    Robert keeps mentioning how the Autopilot is better than on Model S, but it's only better than HIS Model S. Newer Model S/Xs have the same Autopilot as Model 3.

  • @djwooski5911
    @djwooski5911 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Autopilot on 2019.12 has 2 distinct advantages that what you see here. no 1 the ghost braking, or behaving like a nervous horse, has gone. no 2 you only need to touch the indicator once and it will complete the full lane change, you don't need to hold it down and it wont serve back. Worth remembering that Robert's MS has AP1 not AP2.5 that is almost certainly in this car.

    • @rogerheuckeroth7456
      @rogerheuckeroth7456 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I still like my AP1 in my Model S better than AP2.5 in my wife's X. AP1 is smoother, not as jerky. AP2.5 seems like it's trying too hard to stay centered in within the lines. If the lines are painted sloppily as is common where I live, the AP2.5 micromanages too much. I'm sure it will get better with time.
      That last statement is one that you can only say about Tesla. Every other car is sold and forgotten by the manufacturer.

    • @KimCJorgensen
      @KimCJorgensen 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy to hear you explain that as I have an old 2008 BMW 650i with one of the first "smart speed pilots" and it's over-breaking to an extent where I've just given up using it. Was beginning to fear auto pilot would be more of the same. Thanks again.

    8 but 12 cameras and definitely no front-facing LIDAR! :-D

    • @GregRobsonUK
      @GregRobsonUK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Indeed. It's front-facing RADAR. As Elon Musk said at the recent autonomy talk, LIDAR cannot see through rain and even in bad conditions (snow, rain) vision is good enough for humans, so therefore it's only a matter of time before machine learning can do the same job of reading the road in poor visibility.
      Why only at the front? As Elon said: "It's the direction in which you move the fastest."

    • @BugMagnet
      @BugMagnet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@GregRobsonUK It is right Musk said that, but I already had a university professor and a vehicular automation grad student disagree firmly with that assertion. LIDAR does enable the car to gain additional information over simple cameras due to the properties of laser light and can also do a lot of the things cameras do with a lot less computing power, saving costs in other areas. Also the argument "Humans drive with just two eyes, therefore cameras are sufficient" does not hold while the cameras used are vastly inferior to a human eye. I would accept it if the cameras could change focal lengths and angles. But then they would be just as expensive as laser scanners and require more computing power on top.

    For owning a Tesla there are a few things you should know based on your comments, but hey, I had to lookup how to engage auto pilot in the 3 too!
    1. Push the turnsignal stock all the way down and it will complete the lane change on its own and turn off the blinker appropriately. You don't actually have to hold it.
    2. the reason you arrived with a different range estimate, is that is based on a rating scale, not your actual trip. The trip screen would have shown you much closer too accurate arrival range. That's why that's there, so you don't have to think about how you're doing, you can simply look down and see how much you're going to use to get to your destination, and if you have round trip estimate turned on you can see that too.
    3. Also of note the performance 3 does not have the aero wheels that increase highway efficiency.
    As always, thanks for the great video and gorgeous scenes from the Nordic areas!

    "Secure" is certainly not a word often used to describe a car's handling, but this just shows what a game changer the Tesla 3 is. I merely drove one on a vacation out in San Francisco. Picking it up in town my wife and I headed down to Carmel/Monterey. There are both absolutely spectacular views, and spectacular opportunities to go sailing off the road and way down to the Pacific. So, the specific solidity, the instant-direct steering, the "just let off the gas and it slows way down" means you feel more connected to the Tesla than any car I've driven. And, for reference, my car is a VW Golf 1.8T with full Bilstein B8, lowering springs, 18" Michelin Pilot Sport tired beauty. But the Tesla, impresses more. It's that good.

    Although it may be nowadays unfamiliar to have the speedometer in the middle, that’s where it often used to be in the past. I drove an original Austin Mini in the early seventies and the speedo was a big dial low down in the middle. I seem to remember that the Morris Minor had the speedo in the middle of the dash too.

    • @notrappaport5340
      @notrappaport5340 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original Toyota Yaris had a low, center-of-the-dash speed gauge, too. I rented one once. On my way out of the airport rentals lot, I thought to myself: "I'm going to get a speeding ticket in this slow, little car." Sure enough, on my way back to the airport, on a highway with narrow shoulders beside deep ditches, I kept my eyes on the road instead of watching the speed gauge-and of course, I got a speeding ticket.
      I think the Model 3's speed indicator is less problematic than those, as it appears to be closer both to the wheel and to the driver's eye level.

    Robert. One comment on the indicated range in the Tesla. You might want to keep in mind that unlike other EV's Tesla cars are "terrain aware" meaning that when you have entered a destination into the navigation system it is calculating not only the distance but also elevation changes as well as traffic and speed limits etc. along the route. So when you see what looks like anomalies at any specific point in your trip, the car is likely factoring these elements in. By the end of your trip the Tesla is usually within about 1% plus or minus.

      @@genephipps6421 what I mean is that even when navigating, the battery gauge shown on the left side of Model 3 screen continues to display "rated miles" of range remaining (or percentage). It's not a guess-o-meter, meaning it is not affected by how efficiently you drive. That said, there are two other places to see range data:
      1. At the bottom of navigation directions panel it shows expected range remaining when you reach your destination.
      2. Tap the button near the bottom left corner to pop up an app picker and select the Energy app. It has two tabs. Select the trip tab and you'll see a graph of predicted battery percentage remaining as you drive from starting point to destination.
      Both of these take hills and speed limits into account, but not your driving style.

      Yes, there is a speed alarm. From the Model 3 owners manual:
      To adjust the Speed Limit Warning setting,
      touch Controls > Autopilot > Speed Limit Warning, then choose one of these options:
      • Off - Speed limit warnings do not display
      and chimes are not sounded.
      • Display - Speed limit signs display on the
      touchscreen and the sign increases in size when you exceed the determined limit.
      • Chime - In addition to the visual display, a
      chime is sounded whenever you exceed the determined speed limit.
      You can also specify how the speed limit is
      determined:
      • Relative - The speed limit is determined
      automatically based on detected traffic signs and GPS data. If desired, you can set a speed limit offset (+ or -) if you want to be alerted only when you exceed the offset speed limit by a specified amount. For example, you can increase the offset to +10 mph (10 km/h) if you only want to be warned when you exceed the speed limit by 10 mph (10 km/h).
      • Absolute - Manually specify any speed
      limit between 20 and 140 mph (30 and 240 km/h).

    Other manufacturers say lidar is necessary for autonomous driving but is essentially a light-based observation system which two cameras can achieve by making an internal 3d image.

    9:44, It's not a forward facing Lidar, just good old fashion radar. radar uses radio waves where as LiDAR uses laser light so can be affected by weather.

    At 18:00 you talked about the range being optimistic. Was the fact you had been travelling (in the ship) without using any electricity distorting the estimate?

    3 questions I want answered. Can you get a black out option on all chrome? Can the LEDs adjust so you don't have to constantly turn off high beam? When will I ever be able to afford this? :(. I am very disappointed there is no HUD.

    12:52 Okay, something is not right here:
    The car has a 496 km range. The charger is adding 788 km per hour and the remaining time is 1hr 10 min.
    How does that work?

      Lithium batteries are charged with a CCCV profile. Let's say you have a 2Ah cell. You charge at a constant 2A current, so it should take an hour to charge. The issue is that you can only charge at that current until the cell voltage reaches 4.2V (around 70-80% of charge depending on the cell), then you have to start lowering the current so you don't go over 4.2 or the cell will get damaged (and possibly explode). The closer you get to 100% the more you have to lower the current to keep the voltage in check.
      I'm guessing Tesla would use an even more conservative charging curve to extend the life of the cells further.
      So the charger is probably charging at 800km/h for the first 50%, 400km/h for the next 30%, 200 for the next 15, etc.

      Best not to charge above 80% unless you need to anyway, bad for the battery (the closer you get to 100% the worse the wear)
      I try to keep my phone between 45% and 75% (12% of a cycle wear for the 30% depth of discharge) using Accubattery to alert to unplug, and avoid charging when the phone is hot

    I was very inspired by this review and went to the website to place an order: 750,000 Sek!
    This is nutso pricing, at the peak of my petrol head phase I had a fully specced V10 BMW M5 and got change from £60k. How can Tesla charge such high prices? Isn't the 3 meant to be the "affordable Tesla"?
    I seem to recall talk of it costing ~35k but I haven't found that price anywhere.
    Sorry to be negative, I want to jump on the EV bandwagon but it's not sustainable for me at that price.
    Lease plan was slightly cheaper, but they imposed a limit of 15000 km/year, which means I get to use my tesla for 3 months....

    The range displayed on the screen takes into account headwinds, tailwinds, and terrain; weather you will be driving up hill and down hill. So, maybe the car’s estimation of range was spot on.
