    Hey thank you for these videos!I sure wish I had youtube 15-20 years ago when I built Nascar only models. Rollcages and body was the hardest. I’m not sure if you’ve ever watched the hpiguys workshop videos. All you ever see him paint his models with are spray cans. He then uses floor polish for his gloss finish. For him, that’s all he needs and he gets great results.
    Personally, I use Tamiya spray cans for almost all large surface coverage. I don’t usually use any over coating, I just let the finish stay as it is. For a high gloss finish, I’ve used car paint polishes to get a really nice smooth finish. I haven’t tried the floor polish trick yet on a model but I’ve tried the liquid polish on various surfaces as trials and it’s not too bad.
    Most times I use dull coat spray finish on my other models aircraft, armour, ships,and sci-fi which works pretty good. I personally find most spray gloss coats don’t really provide “gloss” to surface - more of a semi gloss finish. But then that’s been my experience only. I’ve seen other models where sprays are used (from cans or airbrushes) and the final result is amazing.

    I'm 66 now and been building models off&on much of that time. I have an airbrush, but haven't tried using it yet. I still use Tamiya and Testors spraypaints. I use primer on car models and some aircraft models, especially under gloss paint. I have tried using "commercial" spraypaints like Rustoleum and Krylon, but results haven't been good. One YT modeler uses them, makes it look easy, but I get horrid fisheye and orangepeel, that I don't get using Tamiya/Testors.

    As a tip i would spray a light coat and let it dry a few minutes. Then do it again. I think the more you spray the car or whatever the better it will come out. "And clean the nozzle after each coat." Sometimes the paint builds up on the nozzle and that's where you can get splatter on the car.

    orange peel happens when you spray too thick or don't let it dry enough between coats.
    best policy, minimal paint to cover and 2-3 light coats of clear.

    Great video and will save a lot of time...only thing I don't get, did you remove the original painting or was it silver to begin with? I preparing to re-paint one of my own and just wondering if it's necessary to remove the old paint because it is holding pretty good to the metal. Or just to remove the paint from the areas like ones which you've marked on this model?

    We use airbrushing because i cannot afford the little spray cans from hobby lobby, like $10 to $12 bucks for like 3 ounces of paint, and the problem with big cans from Lowes depending on where you live, too much gas comes out with paint and bubbles up your paint job, gotta strip it n start over, I've even decanted them which works better in an airbrush because lack of gas , so i quit spray painting, airbrushing gives me such a shiny coat with very little work 😉

    On the last car, is that the Midnight Purple colour? It looks like it. I need to get that colour for one of my cars. I prefer the last one for clear. Have you thought of doing a risky fourth clear coat on the first car to see if that gives a little more shine? Just a thought. I use Gravity Colors 2K Clear and love it, but switching to Zero Paints as I have a VERY long wait time to get the Gravity Colors product to my door. • @leighton_lam
    @leighton_lam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hello! Thank you for the helpful tutorials! I ran into a problem unfortunately. Please bear with me, I'm a beginner and I ran into a problem recently with my build. It's a Lotus Europa 1/24 from Tamiya and the main shell is white. After the first base coat, I had some tiny paint holes and some bumps almost as if the paint bubbled in parts of the car, noticeably near a fender and under the rear bumper, probably because of paint build up. I believe that was orange peel?
    This is the part where I think I began to get overcomplicated and ahead of myself. I tried sanding down and filling the holes with Tamiya basic putty which is grey. I waited a day for the putty to settle then sanded it so was smooth and in the shape of the shell, holes were filled out. Then, I tried spraying another (2nd) basecoat of the pearl white, and to my dismay, I found out that the pearl white spray (TS-45) I was using was very translucent, and showed the grey putty areas. So, I sanded the car again trying to get rid of as many grey areas as possible. At this stage I have ran out of spray (100ml can), and too eager to finish the shell. It was probably a rookie mistake, but then I tried hand painting the more difficult grey areas with flat-white enamel from Tamiya because I couldn't wait to buy another can of the pearl white.
    Now I've bought 2nd can 100ml can of pearl white and sprayed the other parts (bumper, back engine cover, spoiler) and then on the main shell yet another basecoat (3rd). There is still some orange peel from my amateur spraying, one or two grey putty areas (3-5mm in size) you can see when it is well lit, as well as some scribing scratches. You can also see slightly raised patches where I've used some enamel in my amateur attempt to cover up the grey putty areas.
    Now I've used two cans of Tamiya pearl white spray, and still have a pretty mediocre shell. Do I buy third can of the pearl white and spray to cover up the grey regions and fill scribing mistakes? Or should I just clear coat it now, polish, and just build the car.

    • @JHHobby
      @JHHobby  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey man..owhh dear😅😅 there is a few mistake u made, 1st the holes u mentioned is normally due to oils/stains on the body so when you spray the paint on it, it will react to the paint and causing it to form a dot/volcano holes. The way to fix this is wait it fully dry and sand the paint until smooth..no need to putty.
      The 2nd mistake about the pearl white is because pearl white is not meant for base coat, you have to spray a layer of solid white first and then the pearl white.. the pearl white is like a transparent white paint with pearl flakes in it. Hopefully this can help😁 if you have more questions you want to ask, find me on my fb page..because youtube comments had no notification 😅

    Any idea what would cause my base coat to get heavy orange peel, after following this exact method? My primer (Mr. Surfacer 1500) was very smooth visually and to the touch. In fact, so smooth that I didn't even sand the primer before spraying the base coat. I did lightly sand the body before primer, though. I airbrushed the base coat, which was Volcano Red by Splash paints. I didn't have this issue using their paint before but I used a different primer, a much thicker Rustoleum self etching primer that I think was actually meant for metal and that turned out perfect.

      Nevermind, I figured it out.. turns out it was the weather. Even though it was a clear, sunny day.. I painted the first half earlier in the day, which turned out fine.. it was after 5PM that I finished it, when the sun was starting to set and I guess that increased the humidity in the air, which caused the base coat to wrinkle. It also caused the clear coat to get a milky haze. I need to get an indoor booth, lol. If it's not dust or bugs landing on it, it's the weather..

    Yes, you make it look very easy. At what point do you paint the interior - roof lining etc? Do you paint the interior first and then mask off before painting the outside or the other way around?
    What does "paint correction" mean?

    • @JHHobby

      Normally i will finish all my paints and polish 1st then i will do my roof lining, trims etc 😁

      @@JHHobby thank you. I guess you would paint the roof lining etc by brush? You have a very accurate and steady hand. Unless you use a Posca pen? Thanks for the video.

      Its consider semigloss..but it doesn't matter if its gloss or matte, once clear coat is on every texture will became glossy😂

    Hey mate do you ever use wax and grease remover after applying paint to clean before clear coat or? Ok to use a paint brush on base coats to brush any dust off too after it’s dried for a while or?

    do you recommend me putting a grey primer for a gray metallic base coat? or you think i’d be fine with just going in with the base color no primer ??

    • @JHHobby
      @JHHobby  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi sorry for the late reply. some metallic paints u can use grey primer no problem..but some paints will be more transparent like red/yellow/white and it will need a different basecoat so that the paint coat will be even and easily covered.

    Woow! So nice. I would like to do something like this with some of my diecast cars (1:32/ 1:24) and i have a few questions if it's possible.
    1. What's the colour name (how should i look for it) at 12:32? - look's like eggplant. Soooo nice.
    2. If the car has its original colour yellow and i want it to spray in electric blue, what do i need to do? (just spray the new color or i have to use something else first? )
    3. Can i use spray paint for plastic on metal/alloy?
    Thank you

      Hey😁 the purple is called midnight purple 3, code LX0
      Some paint will be more transparent so its best to spray a grey/white/black base 1st depending on the paint. Yes you can use those paint on your models😁

    Hey idk if you will respond or if someone could help me out but In the vid he uses the 1200 sandpaper on the top of the car first then a 3m scotch brite pad on the back and front. I was wondering do you do whole body with 1200 grit then sand with 3m scotch brite? Or when does one use the scotch pad. Thank you

    • @JHHobby
      @JHHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, you can use both actually..just that scotch brite is very useful on tight areas and uneven edges😁
