    So SOLD! Awesome video. Seems like a great combo for both stills and video. I love the cinematic look, the coloring, the ability to capture emotion, and the low light capabilities! Everything I'm looking for!

    Yes, this is a great lens. I've compared it to the Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8 which is another great lens. What favours the GM is the smoothness of the background blur, isolation of subject, and the extra light it allows into the camera at f1.4. What favours the Batis is the weight/size, the weather sealing seems better, focusing seems a tad faster, and the contrast, and colour rendering.

    I have the 24 1.4 gm and after I got that I knew I needed the 85mm 1.4 GM. Just have to tell my self to pull the trigger lol. Great video might just be what i needed to see. Might be an early Hanukkah gift.

    Nice review. The 85 is really great, it's just keeps the human form in a more natural state, people and faces look weird wide angle. The Gmaster is amazing, really. It's almost crippingly expensive for many though. One thing to consider is vintage 85's. Carl Zeiss, Pentax Takumar, Canon FD lenses. Give you the same focal length and fast apertures at like a fraction of the cost. Cheap adapters as well, yes yo don't get the auto focus features, but with mirrorless it's not really an issue.
    $2000 lens vs a $250 option ;)
    Great video mate.

    • @GreenLightLife1
      @GreenLightLife1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mark. I definitely agree the price is steep but I really do believe you get what you pay for in this instance. That being said, those other lens options are very good. I’ve got a review coming out on the Zeiss Batis 85mm soon and it’s almost half the price.
      Maybe I’ll do a best lens for a certain budget series or something in the future.

    Have they fixed the AF noise on this lens yet? It was a going concern when this lens was first released. Seriously considering trading in my Sigma ART 85mm for this one. I like a review that covers the good, the bad and the ugly. There are known issues with the lens. This video posted over two years since its release in Feb. 2016, , it would be good to hear if the issues have been addressed, otherwise I am not sure what you're contributing to the ongoing conversation.

    Good vid, but a few issues.
    1) It's not sharp! It's notoriously soft (when compared to other master primes (135, 24mm etc) but this is also a bonus for portraits when minimal retouching is required)
    2) It's not the choice sony lens for video, the batis 85 has OSS and unless you put shots side by side you'll most likely never see the difference in 'bokeh' which is subjective anyway, and the batis is sharper by a mile
    3) the autofocus on this 85 is rubbish. Slow sluggish especially wide open.
    Only portrait photographers rave about this lens and the only reason they do is because it requires less retouching in post because it is soft and covers up imperfections because it's soft.
    Don't get me wrong, the 'bokeh' is gorgeous and its a tank of a lens, but I will definitely wait for a V2 of this lens with improved optics and the new dual supersonic focusing motors of the 135 g master, before even considering this lens.

    Bought this lens but the only drawback is that when I was taking shots at a wedding recently I had to stand quite far back for group shots as its obviously a prime lens (with no zoom) & as a result missed getting quite a few shots as a result in terms of cropping.I'd b interested to know your thoughts on how to get around this please.

      thats amazing! clearly that gmaster has some amazing contrast. And seems like the a7iii might have some nice color science changes to help back that up as well over the a6500. Definitely making me want to make the jump. i just recently got the 85mm 1.8.

    I agree the 85 mm for TH-cam looks so much better - Johnny edlind’s channel is a good example as I think his camera guy uses (gh5) with an 85 mm equivalent for b roll and a wide angle for talking shots, and his channel stands out

    I noticed a bit of focusing issues compared to the 85 1.8. Do you think this lens is geared more towards portrait photography opposed to video? I really wanted to like the lens but it struggled in low light which is my primary use and focusing was slower (AF). What's been your experience and can you compare to the 1.8? I'm thinking I should have gave it more than an hour test.

    @Green Light Life - The more i see your videos, more i fall in love with 85 GM. I was almost certain for this lens when i saw your review of A7-III for filmmakers, but then everyone is raving about the 85 f1.8 so mind was dwindling.. But again saw your beautiful review about this lens..haha.. just waiting for Sigma's lineup..Once it is released i ll be sure which way to go.. :)
    If possible pls make comparision between 85 1.8 and 85 1.4GM for their video capabilities..their af performance in video and so on.. :)

    Hi. I just consider, which 85 I should buy. Sony 1.4 or Canon 1.2. Maybe you can help somehow? I just seen a few tests an I don't know how big difference is between them. I'm interested in the same conditions, the same distance, and reality about sharpness, chromatic abberation, how fast they focus, and work on post in lightroom (how much work you need to add to picture be usable) , and of course bokeh- smoothness, and shape of bokeh ball 😁
    Thank you very much for your time, and sorry for my English.

    • @GreenLightLife1
      @GreenLightLife1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They’re both absolutely fantastic lenses. Honestly, between those two, I’d just say it comes down to what body you’re using. If you’re using a canon body, get the canon lens. Same with the Sony. The native lenses are always going to be more reliable with their respective bodies.

      I have 3 body of Sony Mirrorless and 2 are ff (A7mk3 it is my latest purchase) but lack of lenses. 55 Zeiss 1.8, canon 85 1.8 and metabones V and a few more lenses but I can buy second hand canon 85 1.2 Mk 2 in ~ half price but still not sure. I just rebuild my gear from basics because, before I was in Sony A mount, but it dies a while ago. Ok. I do apologise but I need to disappear because I need to go for work. Thx.

      @GreenLightLife1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha no worries man! Check out the 85mm 1.8 by Sony. It’s like half the price and a totally fine lens. Just doesn’t quite have that “high end” look and feel. You can also try Sigmas Version or even the Zeiss Batis line for a touch more.

    I'd call myself a 'pro-sumer' but no plans to make the big bucks in photoshoot work. So how does the 85 G compared to say the 85 Batis 1.8? If it's 'close enough' for prosumers, then I'll save the 700 bucks. :)

    I own this lens and let me tell you...
    DO NOT BUY IT
    Just get the 85 f/1.8 and the 55 f/1.8 for the same price.
    The f/1.4 is an amazing lens but since I’ve compared it with the 1.8, I now find it useless, heavy and overpriced.
    If you don’t make money out of photography the 1.4 is just a stupid lens to buy.

    • @GreenLightLife1
      @GreenLightLife1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah man, I’m sorry to hear you feel that way. I’d like to see your tests because in my tests (granted I was only testing the 85gm to the 50 1.8) there was a clear difference across the board. Build quality, fast focus, af-c, bokeh, sharpness through the frame, contrast, flaring, etc.

    • @HinbunEZ
      @HinbunEZ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 85 1.8 Is a beast. My shots come out tack sharp. I don't really see a need for that, "extra 1%." Especially when it costs slightly over x3 of the 1.8. For nearly TRIPLE THE PRICE, the G-Master is no where near triple the lens, nor double, in any regard. Unless that red badge is what constitutes that price tag.
      In my opinion, buying this lens in 2018, especially with the ART lenes around the corner... It's almost comparable as buying the Canon 50 1.2L; shit is only there to wank yourself in front of togs.

    • @tg.tarungarg
      @tg.tarungarg 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Hinichii- The difference isn't in the sharpness.. 85 1.8 is a super sharp lens but compare the background rendition of 1.8 vs 1.4. And this is why it comes with a huge premium.. I love the way 1.4 renders the background.. 1.8 is good bt definitely nt as good as 1.4. :)
