In 2012, I went to Nanjing to study abroad and met a Japanese guy. Around late 2011-2012, I think there was extra hate going on with Japanese people in China and he received somewhat constant text messages from the Japanese embassy to be careful. While he was never attacked, he experienced discrimination when he was on a taxi and the taxi driver said to him “if I knew you are Japanese, I would not have allowed you in my car”. In 2012, I went to Nanjing to study abroad and met a Japanese guy. Around late 2011-2012, I think there was extra hate going on with Japanese people in China and he received somewhat constant text messages from the Japanese embassy to be careful. While he was never attacked, he experienced discrimination when he was on a taxi and the taxi driver said to him “if I knew you are Japanese, I would not have allowed you in my car”. Mind you, my friend speaks fluent Chinese and obviously understood everything. He laughed it off
