unimportant question: does travelling or backpacking get boring if you've already visited so many places? like, do touristy places feel similar and tourism activities feel repetitive?
Agreed! (Also I assume it's just a typo but given we're talking about the english language - for others reading, we would say "I *was* born and raised" instead of "I am born")
US native here, and I would consider both of you fluent in English! A slight accent (we have different ones throughout the US) or a few grammatical errors do not take away from your fluency. And BTW, sometimes I don't understand the British accent either, lol. 😅 Come visit California, USA! 💕
Nah. Come to Michigan/the Midwest. We are the forgotten sampling of our country. We’ll drink beer with you and grace you with our midwestern hospitality. 🤗
Uyen needs to give German Boyfriend a list of what type of activities she enjoys. Then when he is planning a trip, he can take what she likes into consideration. Food, rest periods, ...
Is it funny that I’ve been watching these shorts and videos for about three months and I just realized that she has given her boyfriend the name “German boyfriend“ in order to protect his identity. For just a second I thought “why is she calling him ‘ German boyfriend’ right in front of him“ as if it was rude. For some reason it felt culturally acceptable for her to say that when he wasn’t in front of her and felt odd with him in front of her but then I realized it’s the same thing as the teddy bear over his face, a conscientious and loving way for her to keep him out of the limelight he does not wanna be in. Guys I wanna say I really enjoy your positive and realistic messages
Remember you are speaking to many thousands of us native English speakers every time you make a video. We understand you perfectly and you have no reason to be nervous!
As an American, your English is really good. Every now and then there’s a wrong tense or something else small. But if anyone gave you a problem, they were just being rude.
Aussie here! 99% of what we say is “gday” and “magpie” so you’re totally fine GB! Also hope you didn’t get swooped too much whilst you were visiting lol!
I always plan everything in advance because i would hate to have any problem in another country and maybe on a tight budget. So i try to plan it all, what i leave open is what i will do or see.
My husband and I are multicultural. He is Canadian European ancestry and I'm from the Philippines. I am the planner, hotel booker and itinerary creator. I get the best deals on hotels, airfare. My husband is the packer, the transportation coordinator, and driver. We make an awesome team! I am too anxious to be a spontaneous type of traveller.
As someone from the North of England. I understand you both perfectly! I actually think you both speak English fluently. It is probably just a confidence issue or you just dont understand us (but we understand your accent). Try not to be nervous. You can also let people know that you didn't catch what they are saying as you are originally from Germany. English people are usually friendly and wont mind!
I am a native English speaker from USA. Our English is different than the British English. I would not know what they are talking about. I would also need to learn some of their words and phrases that are different than ours. Also, thank you German Boyfriend for making me realize how much German I was still living as I grew up. My Great Grandparents were from Germany. Granted, we were slowly changing, but, I see many similarities as to what you talk about and my younger life. Also, for your spice level, it will change, I married a Hispanic, and started eating spicier food. Now, I add spice to my food a lot. Take care!
Please never think your English is bad. There are so many different dialects with English, plus it's a crazy language. I find that those of you who speak more than one language are far more precise with the English language than native speakers. As an American, there are some dialects that I can not even understand! I think you both speak wonderfully. ❤
Traveling with my wife can be a bit of a challenge given her health issues. Her food allergies mean we need to find an aparthotel. Her chronic fatigue issues mean that we need to find a mix of things to do. For example, museums and sights that are physically accessible to her (sometimes getting a wheelchair helps), and more extensive things that I can do alone when she needs a break. Occasionally she needs a crash day, while my own approach to vacations can be physically punishing (lots of walking, hiking), and I want to try *all* the foods. We went to Dresden this summer, which mostly worked out, although the ongoing construction in the palace meant that she wasn't able to see one of the exhibits. The stairs were just too much :( . On the days she needed to crash, I hiked up to Königsberg and also Meißen.
Yeah the weird thing is I'm in the Netherlands and germans come to my town to visit the beach in summer but our beaches are not even that great. Though I did always go find sharkteeth in the sand so German boyfriend would have liked that. The seabed could be muddy, or slimey feeling at times and you have to pay attention to the tides. But dutch people d go walk along the coast in winter too, we call it "blowing out" and the beach places serve hot chocolate so you can warm back up after the winds blew all the thoughts out of your head.
Biggest travel tip we use, schedule down time! We also each relinquish control of planning alternating trips. How do you handle customs? My husband and kids have dual citizenship and go through a different line when we leave his country. I like not having to keep the children set but my line is sooooo much longer.
I live in America and I think you two speak more like the Americans do. There are different accents in America but they are just like having different dialects so you'd hear the difference in the sounds of words but you'd still be able to understand what the word is. I enjoy the content you create! I watch it all the time.
I agree, it's not super American like but I notice words from time to time that are the AmEn ones rather than BrEn (which makes sense, as AmEn is more visible in movies, online etc so people not in the UK will hear those words more often).
My husband and I, I'm the planner! What I do now because my spontaneous husband needs it I plan in a him day! That's the day he gets to do whatever (always in the middle of the trip) so he can spend a day or two seeing what's around then he's free to pick wherever. It works for us
I am more like German bf and my husband is like Uyen when it comes to traveling. We have learned to compromise over the years. Now I make sure to schedule spontaneous days into our travel itineraries 😆
Ive never travelled outside of Australia but when my husband and i do travel we plan our holidays based first on where we want to eat and then what there is to do near where we are eating. Both of your english is fantastic.
I'm from Canada and a native English speaker. I honestly only understand UK English about 75% of the time. Some of the accents are SO difficult to understand, and there are so many Britishisms! I asked someone how long a delivery would take to arrive and she answered, "How long is a piece of string?" which apparently is a very common phrase indicating she had no idea how long, but I'd never heard of the saying before so I thought she was intentionally trying to be annoying (to be fair, that was also a very unhelpful answer). My partner and I watch the Great British Bake Off religiously, and depending on who the show contestants are in the season, I have to turn on subtitles or ask my British partner what people are saying every few minutes. Accents are a struggle!
I love this. You guys are great and so fun to watch. I never watch podcasts other than true crime, but I absolutely love you guys' energy. Big fan! ❤❤❤
If you're comfortable can you talk about how did you meet him & felt comfortable with him, build **trust** completely and feel safe. How did you decided he's the one for you for sure? Relationship advices videos maybe please 🙏🏼❤
That is an excellent idea! I have seen a video, though, where she explained how they met and how their relationship developed. I would have no idea how to suggest that you find that video but just in case she is it able to respond, you might check, maybe her playlist! Good luck!
I’m from the UK, I love people at least trying to speak with me even if it’s the wrong vocab/tense, a lot of the time I get ‘sorry English not good’ and my response is always ‘it’s fine I’m same in your country’, we laugh and continue to try and communicate. Sometimes it’s easier talking back a little broken because all the filler words can confuse the non English speaker 😊
Gosh, that would give me so much anxiety. My partner and I went to Vietnam for 1.5 weeks and I had everything planned 6 months beforehand, flights and train tickets booked 3 months in advance. I always make spreadsheets for the places I want to go and will make heat maps, for example I will find 1 thing I want to do that day and we will buy tickets, than I will look on the map for any place that is within 15 minutes walking distance, that way I don't accidentally book 2 events that are so far apart we will be stressed rushing from one to the other.
Uyen I love you so much :) I’m German but I live in Australia now and my boyfriend is Australian. Mixed couples are the funnest! Herzliche Grüße an dich und German bf :)
My wife is a teacher and speaks 4 languages. She's also picking up, Somali, and Portuguese, from her students. She's also an ardent watcher of Korean dramas. I also like some of them like Crash Landing on You
Hi so I'm getting my Master's in English language, 1 yalls English is great. 2 The English you're using with your friends, and in Thailand is sometimes classified as ELF English as a Lingua Franca so it makes sense that it is easier to speak English to Thai speakers of English than to "native" English speakers as the syntax and grammar rules are different.
I don't know what I did but since a few days, your videos are automatically dubbed in french. Listening you in English was one of my pleasure! I hope I will find a way to stop this automatical translation !!!
It sounds to me like you somehow got your closed captioning changed. That would be unusual that you don’t know how you did it because it’s specific things you need to do. But glitches do happen! So, check your closed captioning, if that didn’t work, I don’t know what to do. Closed captioning has its own little button in the upper right hand corner, but that just turns it on and off. To get to the settings for closed captioning, click on the little gear wheel in the upper right hand corner, click on closed captioning, and from there, it sounds like you would need to click on English. Good luck!
Oh thank you. Actually, it seems that my mobile web browser via Opera, don't allow me to change the default settings. But if I use the official youtube app, then I can turn the spoken language to original English. Without your message, I'd never think to check this option. Thanks again
@@DonnaJo3452 it is not closed caption it is trail youtube does to part of the audience, me included unfortunatly, of AI generated audio (7 languages avaiable). And it is by default, took me a while to find the setting to change back to the original audiotrack.
This Canadian thinks your English is fantastic! I don't fluently speak any other language, and am always blown away by multilingual people. You would always have my patience and listening ears if we ever had a miscommunication!
You guys would fit in with the Canadian way of speaking & living. Every 2nd one is a mixed couple here & ppl just don't care. Your English is REALLY IS VERY GOOD & you'd do fantastic here. You'd be totally understood everywhere. However GBF, you WILL be asked, 'how are you doing today', by everyone. I just say 'oh, not too bad'.... You 95% sure, won't encounter any racism at any place, UNLESS it is an immigrant to Canada. They always ask if you want separate bills in restaurants. PLEASE to my Canada. We'll go through parts of Alberta and also Manitoba. You could go to B.C. and see stuff on your own....it several places you could stay with ppl I know and not have to pay 😁😁😁
😂 if someone says hi, how are you? It’s almost just like saying hi. Always hopefully you would say good and you? The saying really just means hello and they want you to say hello back.
Accommodation is something I won't compromise on when I travel. It has to be booked for the entirety of the trip, no exceptions. I don't need the added stress of "what if" and "maybe I'll be able to book...". I also like doing research on places to visit and things to do, so I'll make an itinerary but whether I follow it to the letter or not depends on the day and how I feel. That I'm more flexible with. Also, I'm surprised you guys said that plane tickets from the UK to mainland Europe were expensive. If you go with one of the numerous budget airlines, you can really good, cheap deals. I've paid as low as 25 euros for a return flight from the UK to Prague and back.
I think it's perception too. If you constantly approach situations as "you are mixed" then you will see your whole life but also everything else as mixed. You will begin to see other people's reactions as approaching you both as "mixed". If you can see your lives and habits as just a couple that is made of two individuals that are independent and creative, the mixed part won't factor in. The world is more diverse these days and most people are not looking at your mixed culture. Now if you are arguing in public, then yes people are looking at you. But remember your differences would be the same even if you had the same culture or color. I have had relationships with people from my country and our differences are from being who we are, that's all. Also, I know what you mean about prices. From the US to Germany the tickets are 2k more even for economy class. Was cheaper to book the tickets in Germany.
I was traveling to a small town in the mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. A friend let me use his discount to fly into Mexico City, but it was standby. He could see how full the flights were, and he said the return flights were wide open. Well, not after two weeks! Apparently the kids in Mexico were out on holiday and in two weeks 99% of the tickets going to Texas were booked! Hours in the airport and a long flight back through another state. 😅
Cute ! I live in India and am Indian and I can’t eat even moderately spicy food … and I’m a foodie . Not easy ! Btw , I agree with German boyfriend that you must try local food.
Come to America and explore from east to west and north to south. So many different accents! My husband is from southern italy, he had a priblem with the southern accents 😅
speak of food. That one time we went to USA, my mom somehow managed to get us Thai restaurant almosts everyday. When we ended up with fast food, we would end up with big pile on leftover fries while marveling on the giant serving size.
As an Australian woman on her own a lot in my life, I’ve also had a lot of instances where being a woman has disadvantages. You have to be selective about where you get mechanical advice and home improvements and some other services because they’re not comfortable speaking to a woman. I don’t get it. We’re just as intelligent and decisive, but I often think I need to take a male relative with me. 😢 PS your English is perfectly understandable to native English speakers, many of whom have accents as well. 😊
Oh boy! I am such a planner and my partner is so spontaneous. If I had my way I would schedule every day, every few hours haha. Now we compromised - I can plan a daily activity and we're spontaneous around that lol
Depends how much contact with foreigners the native speakers have. I work a job where i meet a lot if people and my parents arent native speakers. I have little trouble understanding imperfect english. My husband is the opposite. He meets new people very infrequently and his parents are native/high proficiency english speakers. He has a lot of trouble understanding non-native speakers. And he also uses a ton of jargon/slang when he speaks to them. This is just so counterintuitive for me. I always automatically slow down and use simple vocab.
Thank you! As a long time Ausländer in Germany, I never got why you would ever go to the Nordsee by choice. I guess some people hust preffer depression as a holiday destination :))
Can i recommend you Portugal for your next visit? Please don't visit only Lisbon. Too many tourist only places that dont offer the authentic experience. In a 3h train travel you can go to the north or south of the country and the food is great! Have a great day, you two!
I'm in the U.S. I have had conversations with people from the U.K and Australia and not understood a word. I agree that you would have an easier time here, but, depending on where in the country you go.
Personally, I prefer GB's way of travelling. I like to research the place I am going to. I don't like to just lie on the beach or by the swimming pool. What's the point of going to the other side of the world to just lie on a sunbed.
You guys are just so cute❤❤❤ Can you do an episode on how it is in an intercultural relationship when your neither of you speak each other's 'heart language'. For example, Japanese...has the social, polite way of 'not saying exactly what you mean' but there are just some things that don't even have a way to say it. We here don't care at all if you use the wrong tense or are a bit wrong....even english speakers don't speak English here. In America there are so many different accents. I don't even understand some of the accents. It's their colloquialisms and cadence...mostly the south and south east. Canada....just Quebec where they speak French you wouldn't understand.
28:42 Greetings from the Czech Republic! Don't worry, you're not the only ones who don't like our national food very much, although we do have some gems like svíčková or vepřo knedlo zelo. That's what most people like. But all those dishes are so heavy and meaty and fatty so you can't eat it for a long time. And those who eat it every day are usually (in my experience) fat. But our country is very beautiful. Apart from Prague, I recommend visiting Český Krumlov. For me it is much more beautiful than Prague and there are great restaurants, various museums, galleries and of course the castle.
Haha, I can understand that about English. In 2008, I spent six weeks with my cousin, who married an Englishman and lived near Manchester. I thought I spoke English very well, but the first week I felt terrible and I understood maybe 50% 🤣🤣
My gf is Filipina. Most Filipinos speak english but often refuse to because they fear losing face. That I'm not a native english speaker makes no difference!
Please feel free to practice English constantly. It always changes and it is a weird language. Once I get used to the way, someone speaks that’s OK. At first, I may be confused, but then I will understand. I think you both speak crazy well! I think you are both excellent at speaking English and don’t worry about the tense.
Some UK accents are so hard to understand even for me as an American! The Brits like in Yorkshire and Scotland are like a foreign language to my ears. If you come to the US you’ll have trouble with New York City, Boston and the South US. Anywhere west of Pennsylvania and all over the Western US you can really understand the English. And YES you two speak with an American accent!!
As a Czech person, you're not wrong about the food. The value for money is the worst in the touristy areas and you can do a better in both food quality and price if you know where to go, but Czech food is still very heavy and bland. We do have a big Vietnamese diaspora here though so in the same way that you would authentically get a Döner in Germany or a Curry in England, the best local food is Vietnamese food.
I feel like some of this is culture but a lot of it is personality too. Everyone has different personalities they have to mesh when they get together even if they share culture.
I'm from California, and my spouse is from France, so when we travel we do a mix of planned and spontaneous, the things we are NOT spontaneous on are hotels and anything where we need to book tickets in advance, tons of research and booking once we buy our travel tickets, but not for everything, like for food it really depends on where we go, in Strasbourg if you want to go to an interesting restaurant usually you need to book in advance, but like on Jeju Island in Korea we only ever booked the hotel and never booked anything else. But I'm of the frame of mind that it's better to stay in one place for a bit, like one region at a time or one city at a time, and not too many planned activities in one day maybe one or two, no more than that, it tires me out, lol. We still haven't gone to the UK yet, we had a friend that lived in Cambridge that kept inviting us to visit, but timing and prices were horrible the times when the prices were cheaper our friend wasn't available and when our friend was the prices to go were soooooo expensive, even on the Eurostar, so we never went, lol, still waiting to go. I guess I've been living around non-native English speakers for so long (almost 10 years now), I think you both sound fine! But I have to admit when I'm around native English speakers, doesn't matter what country they're from, it's kinda nice not having to modulate my language so people can understand me. I mean there are phrases and vocab that are definitely different among the different English speaking countries, and that can cause problems, but I've never had any issues personally
15:21 speaking of magpies, hahahahahahahaha, but no seriously, the magpies in the region of California that I grew up in, while technically genetically similar to the other magpies in North America, the ones in California have yellow bills!!!! Can you believe it!! I've lived on 3 continents so far that have magpies and have only ever seen yellow billed magpies in my home region. They were isolated I guess from the rest of the magpies that were evolving because of the Sierra Nevada mountain range during a certain point in the ice age (I don't know what age, not good with that kind of stuff), and California magpies are the best at tolerating heat because in some parts of California the temperature can go up to 42-46C on the hottest days
it's funny that the both of you were pushing each other in the u.k. to speak to people - as an american who's watching this podcast, the both of you speak english very well, but in an american way, not british, lmao, which makes it even better >:) the u.k. and u.s. love a little sibling rivalry i think.
Okay, i just got a FLABBERGASTED moment when suddently the audio went into the most spanish IA audio ever... I despise IA so i went into the original again :D

Sometimes it’s easier talking back a little broken because all the filler words can confuse the non English speaker 😊
Love from the bottom of my heart. May the Almighty keep you both smiling together until your last breath
✨💖💞💖✨
Loved this episode!
2 The English you're using with your friends, and in Thailand is sometimes classified as ELF English as a Lingua Franca so it makes sense that it is easier to speak English to Thai speakers of English than to "native" English speakers as the syntax and grammar rules are different.
i enjoyed this episode very much :)
You would always have my patience and listening ears if we ever had a miscommunication!
beautiful new setting
I was born in Ukraine but have been living in the USA since 2007. I’d definitely consider both of you fluent in English-just a slight accent!
Everyone here says 'love you', when they hang up the phone from family.
As a Brit, even we don't understand each other half the time so don't worry lol
Good to know 😂 I'm from South Germany, living in a city, and I don't understand the village people around my city!? 😂
German boyfriend really loves you if he travels without having pre-booked a hotel for the full stay 😂😂 Love you both guys! ❤
I really related to Uyen on the dinosaur fossils! 😂👍🏽 I visit the Tyrell museum in Drumheller a lot, you’d both love it!
Uyen bug lore & bug tour please (im terrified of bugs but im interested 😭)
I need to wait for subtitles 😭
Was cheaper to book the tickets in Germany.
seems like uyen is just a chill girl who doesn’t care where to go 😂
Come and visit Canada! GB would love Drumheller, Alberta and Uyen would love pougine!
I've traveled all over North America, Your english has a Canadian West Coast vibe
cool podcast. also, interesting thumbnail!
cutest bear sticker, aww, i need to watch these all
[25:43] "you felt like a family member with me at that time?" German boyfriend thought he was about to be brotherzoned lol
Aww I'm glad both of them discussed racism and sexism so plainly and are on the same page about it!
Extremely good audio quality/microphones!
Cute ! I live in India and am Indian and I can’t eat even moderately spicy food … and I’m a foodie . Not easy ! Btw , I agree with German boyfriend that you must try local food.
What I see from Uyen & GBF ...you are both quite picky when it comes to food !!❤
Come to America and explore from east to west and north to south. So many different accents! My husband is from southern italy, he had a priblem with the southern accents 😅
What do I want to do? Eat and drink!
speak of food.
PS your English is perfectly understandable to native English speakers, many of whom have accents as well. 😊
I've never been this early 😊
There are many, many of EVERY type of food. Czech food is good....I have a friend in Czech Rep & homemade food is great.
😍You two🥰 are so sweet and beautiful🌺lots of love from heart to heart✨💖💞💖✨
Uyen, I LOVE TO EAT also. GBF there are butterfly museum, hoodoos, Badlands...tons of native history, good zoos and museums 😊😊
there are no "good" zoos 😛
" What the wind throws your way "
Please feel free to practice English constantly.
Please consider visiting the Bay Area. in California. We have a very diverse population with lots of amazing food.
They were isolated I guess from the rest of the magpies that were evolving because of the Sierra Nevada mountain range during a certain point in the ice age (I don't know what age, not good with that kind of stuff), and California magpies are the best at tolerating heat because in some parts of California the temperature can go up to 42-46C on the hottest days
it's funny that the both of you were pushing each other in the u.k. to speak to people - as an american who's watching this podcast, the both of you speak english very well, but in an american way, not british, lmao, which makes it even better >:) the u.k. and u.s. love a little sibling rivalry i think.
wow such table!!!!
Okay, i just got a FLABBERGASTED moment when suddently the audio went into the most spanish IA audio ever... I despise IA so i went into the original again :D
Good morning 🌞
