    Drybrushing is pretty tricky on FDM prints, has to be done carefully. But not always - sometimes the layer lines can be used to simulate a texture of fabric or even fine chainmail.

  • @Valandar2
    @Valandar2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I've been advocating layering as a technique on FDM prints (as opposed to drybrushing) for a year now - good to hear a pro agree with me. :D

      what exactly is layering?

    • @Valandar2
      @Valandar2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@michaeltroll8429 Basically it's starting dark, and adding successively lighter shades in successively smaller areas to build up the color. Thinning the paint a little, and using brush strokes inward towards the center of the area, helps smooth out the borders between each shade.

      Layering can replace washes as well. I find that FDM prints just drink up the wash without accomplishing anything, because they're so porous. Washes also have a bad habit of picking out the very layer lines that you're trying to hide.

      having messed around with it I'd suggest priming if your going to try and do something resembling an enamel pin thing. Priming in general though seems like it will aid in paint adhesion 100%
      Also keep tooth picks and q-tips nearby.

      By far the best tip I've come across is to layer primer, Krylon CoverMax satin, and primer again (Tip found here: th-cam.com/video/I2mtVPplfu8/w-d-xo.html ) This combined with your miniature print profile has gotten me the best results.

It’s where paint repels in contaminated areas. Chemical pop can happen from silicons, oils and moisture. Cleanliness is Godliness 😂🤜🏼🤛🏼🇦🇺😎🤓

    I didn't get the one but of info I came here for. What kind of paint is recommended. The local comic shop has all these paints for minis but they're $4-7 per bottle while I see bigger bottles of acrylic at Michael's for like 80 cents.

    • @3DPrintedTabletop
      @3DPrintedTabletop  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of videos on this topic, Phil - it's both complicated and simple at the same time. The miniature paints at hobby stores usually have better coverage/pigment density, but hobby paints can work too. A great painter can work with whatever they have. If you're looking for a good brand to start with, I recommend Vallejo Game Color Starter. Good luck!

  • @stunthumb
    @stunthumb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find that with PLA prints, those first few layers are vital. The paint itself has to BE detail, adding extra paint to blend layer lines where needed, letting paint dry, being patient as hell. It's satisfying though to end up with something that doesn't even look 3D printed, never mind PLA. I tend to sand a lot, and use cataloy knifing putty - its thick and fills layer lines nicely then is smooth as silk when sanded. Patience with those first layers means that shade washes work great, dry brushing works great, and you end up with something that can sit beside anything on your shelf.

    I tried contrast paints on some minis recently,
    thought I'd share a photo of two of them, my print quality is rubbish as I don't really spend a lot of time learning 3d printing and painting as I should to get good at it but thought people here might be interrested in what an absolute novice at 3d prints and painting is being able to do in just spare time when they are really busy

    If you're an old fart like me or otherwise need to use a magnifying glass or the visor don't mind the layer lines. They show up as big as trees under the glass but after a layer of paint or two they don't under the naked eye.
    Also use your polyacrylic trick after priming.
    Layer. Layer. Layer. 4 thin layers beat 1 thick messy layer all the time.

    Hay dude, love the channel ☺ I don't have a printer but still wtch all your videos ☺ as an idea for a video series or viewers interaction segment on your channel. Why don't you get people to send in their 28mm characters by drawing / SDL files etc, have people vote or pick a theme or whatever way you'd like to host it ☺. Set up your cameras with music playing over the top and either live broadcast the figure being printed or pre record the figure being printed. It might sound mad but people would watch a 2hour live stream maybe chatting with you but watching the printer doing it's thing. Might be an extra way to bring up your viewing hour's just do it once a month at the end of an interactive campaign. Maybe send the figure to the prison who designed it or to some one who interacts with you through the process. Sorry for the rant, just taught that might be something that would help your channel grow ☺

    I say paint softly. Be genital remember the mini design for 3d printers are not there yet. They will snap and can have too many easy to break points.
    Also try to paint a story. A well blended white robe may not be as interesting to look at than a whote robe with fade blood patches and mud.
    The best tip I can give you is perfections is found in your mistake.
