Well Tom, after watching your videos on the pellet pro vertical, I made the call and spoke with Dan at pellet pro today. Tomorrow I make my purchase. Oh, and I let them know that it was your videos that convinced me to make the purchase. Thanks again.
Interesting. I would like to know if the wood is smoldering on has a flame... very important for clean smoke. I also like the water possibility. Albeit ,you can not check when the water is gone.,...
Thanks for watching! The pit boss doesn’t have one because of the flame grilling option. You can reach out to Smoke Daddy and ask. But I doubt it. www.smokedaddyinc.com
orean brown Thanks for Watching Orean! If it doesn’t fit give Smoke Daddy a call. Not all pellet grills are built the same when it comes to the deflector shield
Great video, Tom. Made me think I could just add a couple chunks of wood right on top of the heat deflector and they should smolder. Sure enough the chunks added that distinct smoke flavor that pellets can’t. Can’t believe I didn’t think of this before. Thank you, Sir!
Wow! Thanks for this review Tom. That looks very interesting. I love this idea because I don’t have a stick burner. My Rec Tec seems to put out plenty of smoke but I like the option of letting my built in pid do the work! 🍻
Thanks for Watching GT! The built in PID on the Pellet Pro does the same and it compensates pretty nicely for the additional heat from the wood burning. Rec Tec's are wonderful! I had a Mini for 2.5 years before it finally died on me, wasn't worth fixing since it was out of warranty.
nice video, Tom! I read about someone putting a few charcoals and wood chunks in a foil tray and placing inside pellet grill...this will supposely give smoke and charcoal flavors to meats....do you think this will work? have you tried this method? thanks
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ May be you can do a video on that too. Im sure there are plenty who would like to see. Thanks for all the great work that you are doing.
Thanks for Watching Chuck! Good Question! No don't soak the wood, try not to use overly dry splits and keep the bark side away from the fire pot. Follow the directions that come with the Double D!
Tom, have you any experience with Smoke Daddy's vertical smoker? Thinking about getting one, was going to get a Pitts and Spitts until I came across the vertical smoker.
Thanks for Watching Greg! I have seen it in person and it is quite impressive. I have not cooked on it but I talked to Dennis the owner of Smoke Daddy and he claims it is extremely consistent on temps and has a large capacity.
I know this is old, but I thought I'd answer. It does work with it, but the Bull has a rear-oriented feeder, so you have to install it sideways, and the notches don't have any purpose. The temps WILL be high unless you either 1) Prop the lid open a bit and/or 2) cook in cold weather. I mean you can drop the temp down to Lo, and it will still pull 250 easily.
Now I hope this would work for the Members Mark? Love how it smokes already but been wishing for a much smokier taste like my offset smoker/stick burner. Have you tried the charcoal pellets?
Hey Tom, cool lookin addition to the pellet smoker. I’m lovin’ the series you’ve got goin on of showcasing smoke daddy’s products. I’m not a pettier cooker myself, no reason just don’t have one, but I had no idea there was so much aftermarket for them.
Thanks James, I dont believe it will, the burn pot on the Members Mark is not in the middle and their diffuser is angled. so the answer is no. Thanks for watching!
Goood Gollllly!!!! That is interesting! Tom, you're slowly peeking my interest in a pellet grill, for cooks that I don't have the time to fuss over. If you know of anyone in the market for a Blackstone griddle, let me know. I have a 36" still in the box and a slightly used 28" that just don't use. Thanks for all the product reviews!!
Awesome!!!! I'm with You and I think people need to explore these possibilities! I've done it in my own way on my Traeger.......and now on the Rec.......so,... let's see how far we can take it! Mod On!!!!! \m/
Tom, great video as always! I’ve been on the fence with using a smoke daddy cold smoker and now I see this diffuser. I’m wondering if this will work on my rectec 590? Also, could you use wood chunks in the smoke daddy diffuser instead of small logs?
Good morning, Tom. I got one of these when I got my 2300, but I haven't used it yet. Quick question - I know that when you buy wood chunks, often times the chunks will be various sizes. Some the size of your fist. Some are much smaller. So far, have you found any issues with the smaller pieces using the Heavy D? I'm sure they burn up quicker - but has your experience so far led you to only use chunks of a certain size (and thereby wasting some of the pieces in the bag) - or have you been able to use pretty much anything that is in those wood chunk bags? Asking because sometimes I know that the consistency of the chunks in some of those bags can be pretty hit and miss. It's not a big deal when you're just throwing them on an offset or wsm. But if you DO need the larger chunks for this, I can see a lot of waste in some of the bags that I've bought over the years. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for Watching Brad! I prefer to use splits in mine not wood chunks, the wood chunks have a tendency to start on fire which is not good. Splits will burn slowly with good smoke. Also need to be careful about opening the lid too much because the fan coming on will just fan the flames on the wood. It does work excellent though with the individual splits especially on low smoke. Thanks again for Watching!
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ where do you get your splits? Do you have a local source, or do you make them yourself from larger "logs"? I know that academy sports sells maple, apple, and cherry b&b brand logs. Not sure how large they are. Thinking that if needed, I could make splits out of those. Is that similar to what you do?
Good question, Oklahoma Joes sells splits that I pick up from my local Menards which is a Midwest hardware store chain. Works well some are a little long so I cut them with the sawzall
This is very interesting as I’m one of those people who primarily use an offset and drum smoker but I also have a pellet grill and definitely would be interested in this but is it a gadget or did you actually notice more smoke flavor?
@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I would really love to believe that it produces more smoke flavor but I think this is more of a gadget, unfortunately, I've tried everything that's ever been suggested to get more smoke flavor from my pellet grill and nothing beats the smoke flavor from my drum smoker and offset smoker, hands down. I think pellet grills are for most people who don't want to bother learning how to use a real smoker as it can be very challenging to say the least, I know from experience.
Wow, ok,, not sure why you asked then. Have you considered on of the gravity style charcoal grills, you can use chunks of wood in those, in fact I put a split in surrounded by charcoal it worked very well. th-cam.com/video/TnEl7-itSOY/w-d-xo.html
I don't get it.Why would you want to change a pellet grill into a stick burner? If you want more smoke there are various tubes out there for $20 that will add as much smoke as you want.
Daniel Konieczka Thanks for Watching Daniel! It serves multiple purposes, obviously to add more Smoke, but because of the thick gauge steel used it is a great replacement for any other heat deflector that has warped because of thin gauge construction. Also I have put in the slots aluminum water trays with water to add additional moisture to the cook.
The best way to use this is to go no higher than 200 on your pellet grill. Otherwise you will have high temp swings. Once the wood is burned out (3-4 hours) then you can bump up the temp of your grill.
I dont know, i think smoke tubes work great, 4 hrs+ and its usually pretty easy to even squeeze two in there even with a fairly loaded rack. I bought mine for about $15. load them with pellets and constant smoke supplied.
That's what I want to know, been stick smoking for 30+years, got a pit boss cook's excellent but smoke like my 15+ hr stick smoking is not there ,am willing to modify for half the time 👌
