Antique Chisel Restoration

  • I have been wanting a wide, chunky chisel for ages. Their weight and size make them a perfect tools for precise paring and cleaning up joinery. Naturally, I couldn't pass on this beauty when I found it buried in a bucket full of crappy broken tools at my favourite junk shop.
    On close inspection I realised that it was made by Peugeot Frères. I couldn't find out in what period this was made, but I think it may be pretty old. I didn't want to turn it into a mirror finish high-gloss tool, so I flattened the back to make it usable and otherwise only sanded off the worst dings and dongs so that it becomes comfortable to use. I turned a handle from a nice piece of plum and didn't put a metal ring at the end - I'm not going to hammer this one.
    The resulting tool is very sharp and comfortable to use and I think it looks really good. But judge for yourself.

    Great job. Handle a bit plain and I thought you might have used the second half of the pipe fitting for the end. You didn't overheat the steel and you kept everything square and flat. I would be proud to own and use your chisel. Thank you for the excellent job, you did yourself proud.

    Nice blade. Love all the inscriptions. Resto is not bad. I think i would drill the threads out of the ferrule. Also, for fitting the handle to the blade i would recommend the method where you use the tang as though it were a drill bit, drilling into the handle to achieve the perfect hole profile. So you would drill the tang in till you are about 10mm away from the ferrule, then ram it home the rest of the way with a mallet.
    Still, not a bad effort.

    • @imadethischannel

    But no rubber gasket between ferrule and Chisel steel? 😯
    I use epoxy glue to stop it all moving as well.
    But I’ve gotta find me some plum wood! That finish looks amazing. 👍🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      @imadethischannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I was really lucky with that piece of wood. It was my first time with plum, as well. I think it is best to have a tight fit between the wood and the tang of the chisel without anything in between. But I guess that’s a matter of taste.

  • @Yoursoul101
    @Yoursoul101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Am I crazy or is that pressure fitting to the handle something that will wear sooner than later? I get a feeling that some epoxy should have been put in that hole before it was hammered on.

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, I don‘t think that epoxy is necessary here. The wood is under a lot of pressure between the tang and the ferrule and I think it has been done this way for centuries before there was epoxy. I am quite sure that most new chisels are also still done this way.

    Eastern chisels have a concave back. It can be seen when you begin grinding. The end and the edges show up immediately. The idea was to reduce friction and heat with a concave back. I think it's pretty minor detail.
