In the very real knowledge that this comment is going to be washed away in a deluge of other comments, I will still say this anyway. Though this film is 'fun' and meant for purely entertainment purposes (which it does impeccably), to me, this song has more than a germ of the soul of the land, and the people, and how they lived echoing in it. I think Hans Zimmer connected in more than some small way with the heart of these. The melody and chords has a haunting beauty to it, which achingly touches the soul. I say this, and I'm from Ireland, in a very different era, but it brings tears to my eyes, as it makes me feel the unforgiving heat they felt, see it etched on native's faces as they laboured in the desert and their dusty towns, the people and their daily struggle for water and food, for safety, and just for survival. No luxuries did they have. I would assume the mortality rate was quite high for their children and their old folk. Many a widow there was who had to bring up fatherless children on scraps. Yet despite their hardships, I can still feel the people's passion in this song, and their beautiful culture born of toil and want. And so, I am immensely pleased that thanks to "Rango", even a taste of these people who lived through this time, in this part of the world, will be glimpsed by our youngsters of today. My little 3 year old will know of their pain, but also of their passions. These kids aren't going to sit down and watch Clint, John Wayne, and High Noon all on their own. But Rango will have shown them of this time, and the people who lived in it. I think they should be remembered, and loved and respected for the strong and hardy people they were. How wrong it would be that their time, and culture born of their immortal souls, would be buried under another sea of fake plastic culture. Thank you Rango. :)
Sometimes, I think I was born in the wrong generation, but not in an 'edgy' way, or something like that. As a Briton, I am 19 years old, living during an age where Hollywood and almost every filmmaker does not grant the Western any space to shine. The Western used to be the most reliable film genre of them all. It was the most revered, and the most loved. Now, the Horror and Action genres take centre stage. But more than anything else, I hate it when people who know nothing of the genre pronounce it 'dead'. I'll admit that it certainly isn't what it once was, but I've come to realise that it still lives, even if discretely, within a certain few, such as you and me. I know the reasons for this, I have studied it and written a thesis, as I have studied the time in complete depth. I eat, sleep and breathe the Western. I feel that I was born onto this Earth for one main reason: to appreciate it and its time in history, and give back to it in return from what I learned, and what I felt. When I hear any Ennio Morricone score, or see an old classic like High Noon or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, I re-live it. Even whilst hearing the whistling winds that flow through those of great plains or immense fields, I feel an overwhelming sense of belonging. This score brought tears to my eyes. With it, comes that same feeling of total understanding of a time now gone, but not forgotten by those who truly care. That is why I remember the genre every single day, so the fire within does not die. This film is an underrated masterpiece. One of its main messages, revealed in an unrelentingly gorgeous fashion, subtly but powerfully demonstrates the real reason why the Wild West died: industry. There fell a time that gave rise to a beauty that words cannot explain. I have been blessed to witness a film like this. It has shown me that there are still people out there who feel as I do. The Western is in my blood.
