The toxic nature of some families isn’t spoken about enough. Toxic parents don’t equip their kids we it’s the best skill set to succeed.
In my situation my mother convinced me to return home temporarily after uni. Even though I was an adult, working and paying her rent and bills she refused to see me as an adult. Became EXTREMELY controlling to the point she dictated that I had to be out of the house by 8am and couldn’t come back until 6pm.
I loved like that for 18 days, which gave me just enough time to sell pretty much everything I owned to buy a cheap car.
I loved in that for 4 weeks which allowed me to save up a deposit for a flat share.
It took me 10 years and a ton of therapy to recognise that I was raised by an extremely abusive mother. When I went back after uni I didn’t have the skills to recognise her abuse.
Thank God for Dave Ramsey- I learnt all the financial skills I didn’t get taught at home!

Little annoyed with this response, actually. The girl is CLEARLY suffering from mental health EXHAUSTION, she has dreams, she’s working FULL TIME and going home EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. to a house where she feels that she’s a burden and it’s toxic! TOXIC! Do you hear me, Dave?! Telling her to get a part-time job after she’s already working 40 hours a week. Interrupting her after she just said, “I’m actually at Verizon right now.” LISTEN TO HER! She’s telling you that she can’t even take the call from home! This is so annoying. Just ACKNOWLEDGE that you know that she’s scared and upset and working her @$$ off to make ends meet! Give her more details! You’re thinking of ALL KINDS of part-time jobs but offering NO SOLUTIONS. She’s at her breaking point and reaching out for help! THIS is why people are going mentally insane! Everyone holds the secret cards for themselves and it’s “F*** Everyone Else!”

When prices go up, mental health does down, domestic violence goes up, and addiction increases. Anyone responsible for this gouging of people's hard earned money should be held accountable. Do you work? Do you help with expenses such as food, utilities, and do you pay rent? If not that maybe one of the reasons why your parents keep bringing it to your attention and are concerned about your ability to take care of yourself. I am sure they do not mean to be mean about it. It is out of concern for you and your prosperity. Setting goals and working hard to achieve them. They want what you want. To be financially stable, paying your own way, being accountable and responsible. If you work a full time job get a part time job. I worked a full time job during the week as a social worker and part time on the weekends almost my entire professional career. It doesn't leave alot of time to go to clubs and have a couple of drinks, but you have to keep you main objective in mind. Now, I retired early and own my own home.

I went to university for 3 years at the beheast of my parents and entered my 20s in debt paying £500-£1000 on rent while living on less than £10,000 (well below the poverty line) for 3 years in a bid to get a stupid degree I knew I didn't need but my parents claimed I needed to get. I then spent 1 extra year living out of the family home working and only managing to get minimum wage jobs. I completely agree with Dave with the added caveat-by all means dont allow your 18+ year olds to live at home so they can 'make something of themselves', but let THEM decide how they'll go about it otherwise don't be shocked when they cut you off and want nothing to do with an overbearing AND unsupportive parent.

I’m divorced and 36 , with full custody of 2 boys, one of them 5 and special needs (autism) the other 3 and A typical terrible two’er.
After my divorce got a country house out in between work and the help. I tried to do it all on my own. My parents are classic Southern baptist and my Dads a pastor.
I like how you finished a brief summary with “That’s not even the tip of the iceberg”.
Living with your parents in times of crisis is absolutely a last ditch, last resort option in most cases in my opinion…. Even so I did it for 2 years, because as a man I could not even begin to explain to my work (who in most cases were very understanding) to an extent of how daycares close for bad weather, short staffed or for any reason whatsoever they deem fit. The common denominator in me struggle to get out was trying to establish the right time to do it. There were so many factors, as my child was special needs it was always gut wrenching because he was established at his school which happened to be board recognized as the absolute best place for special needs in our district out of 14 other schools, I live in the deep hills of East Texas so work is a 45 minute commute. In order to move the heavens and stars would literally have to align as I would have to find a day care, get them both on a list and hopefully get spots for them both at the same time (which rarely happens) and then make the move.
After accomplishing that I would then have to hands down always rely on (somebody) whether it be a sister as I have two, one that is very unavailable and contentious one that is touched by angel but also has two kids of her own. Even if all this happened, let’s say Ramsey himself drove down and helped me financially and organized it , brought a family psychologist to help iron out the details to get 100% independent (free from needing help).
It would still be one of the most hardest things to do.
Living with my parent very nearly drove me to suicide after I increased my life insurance to 1M dollars for my kids.
They are not bad people, and actually some of the most amazing parents ever, but the stress of living with parents and never feeling comfortable, judged, never being enough literally melts what little encouragement you have.
My father started taking the kids to school in the morning, what a blessing right?
He actually picks them up at 330 until I get home , another blessing right?
This was so helpful but one thing I felt like my parents forgot was how I’m the one that is rearing the children. When I got home from work I got no sympathy; they would stay up until 8 then go to their rooms. 6 to 11 my boys were mine as they should be, cooking, baths and bed… We slept in a big pile on a king size bed. Every doctors appointment, late ER visit, every trip to get an ice cream cone, every trip to just get away from the toxicity 💯% because of my moving in with my kids (I own it) … Was All me.
There were times when I would feel mu SUV of with blankets and pillows and just drive to the lake and park and let them watch Netflix and we just laid in the back with out Amy judgement. I’m so good about not letting my depression affect the, I take them to water parks, restaurants, chuckee cheeses, parks but my parents never see this. In there minds I guess we’re just out and about driving around.
Please women don’t crucify me here because I know y’all done for eons but the sheer amount of energy it takes when you want a steak or a certain restaurant to get up, get the kids dressed, get loaded, get to the restaurant (normally Turing to complete chaos) is like Navy Seal determination. On weekends sometimes I would just get off, pick up the kids and drive , drive far away buy them some toys 🧸 and then get a hotel and lock us in because it’s just big enough to watch a movie and if you happen to fall asleep you just have to open your eyes to get an eye on them.
My advice is to put it on pen and paper, don’t even bat an eyelash at how impossible it may seem and just do it. It’s so much easier when people are literally chomping at the bit to help you because you literally refuse to accept anyone’s help, because when you get that type of credibility, then you know people are really want to help and not going to hold something over your head.
Disclaimer- Both of my parents are cancer survivors and doing great but the surgeries and chemo took a toll. My mothers personally literally changed and they were tired and 58. I would have never ruined our relationship had I not let my marriage fail and my wife turn to drugs.

after my dad passed away, my mom moved into my small flat. It should be only temporary. 10 years passed and she is still living with me. I have no love life, no kids.. I told her to do something but she doesn't care. She is not working and I pay for food end shit.. I am now 45 and I feel like I failed at life. I also see that she is getting older and thats make me super depressed.. knowing that maybe I will have to take care of her. WTF should I do? I just want to enjoy my life, alone.

This is the reality of becoming an adult. Think a form of entitlement is kicking in here where young adults expect the world to change for them when in reality they have to take ownership. Ultimately it’s her parents house and she needs to take steps to becoming independent.
