Can somebody please explain to me, how these people keep talking about how to make 160,000+ a year, and pretend like they don't have to take out taxes out their money, you really only make half of that, if you have any 401k, or Roth being taken out come alongside with health insurance for yourself and your family, you do not take home over 100 plus thousand dollars a year. You also have to pay for rent, or a mortgage, a car payment, other bills that you have, Why do I keep hearing people coming to Dave and act like you get to take all this money home, you do not!
They factor all that in. Dave has been doing this for 30 years. And part of the baby steps is you stop putting money into any retirement until the debt is paid off. You dont buy houses and cars you can't afford. You may need to sell your current home, and rent for a couple years and definitely sell the cars when you are paying $1200 a month in car loans. It all comes back to what you need to do to get out of debt, and then start buying things you can afford.
Apparently, Dave has never heard of the US Tax Code, LOL. Ramsey folks never account for taxes, living expenses, or other essentials like health insurance. They also postpone contributing to your 401k until you are out of debt - a huge mistake not to take advantage of the company match.

Next time you end up deathly ill, tell your MD "no" to the particular tests he/she wants to run. Bet you keep your lips sealed and nod. To the caller, Jessica. There are several very good vet support groups out there, in social media. I'd recommend joining them. And, good on you for having a plan to pay this off.
@Jessica Smith no, it isn't the only thing they do, and I wasn't suggesting that it is. However, there are days where vets perform multiple euthanasias's, and that takes it toll on psyche. Yes, finally someone who isn't begging everybody else in the country , to pay off their student loans. This lady has a big pair! Also she has grit. If any unmarried men are catching this, find out more about this woman. She could make an excellent partner!
My wife works at an emergency vets. They have a base pay, then they can be on call, and that’s commission. So to motivate them after already having worked that 40hours, if there’s an emergency but they’re not at work, they get called with a bigger pay than usual and can come in or decide not to. If they’re already at work, having worked an 8hour shift, if they decide to stay for another surgery they also get more . We’re in Canada so I’m not sure if us is the same.
From what I understand they have a base pay and they get a commission on there work. For example, if no one comes in they get 90k if they do an intense surgery they get a rate for doing that work. Saves the company from over spending, at the end of the day they are still a business.
A lot of assumptions by everyone, and no one accounts for income taxes, payroll taxes, health insurance, rent, utilities, car insurance, food, gas, etc. I also think she overestimated her income at $163k. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate the median income for a veterinarian in Cincinnati at $95k. Trying to maintain the workload and overtime hours to make $163k might be doable short term, but she's looking at at least six years to pay this debt. Bottom line, she overpaid for her degree, even though it is in a well paying field. Using a four year amortization, after throwing the $40k in savings at it, she would be paying $105k per year. Simply not doable if she has any living expenses at all.
She's single, it's definitely do-able. If she's going to be working 80/hour week she doesn't need much in the way of housing anyway. Basically just a place to crash. Living frugally right out of school isn't that hard to do since one hasn't been accustomed to a higher living standard. That's when it becomes very tough.
Dave Ramsey’s work book saved my financial life from going to a disaster many years ago . I used to follow him on the tv glad I found him here again. Who is the guy with him who is equally knowledgeable?
I'm sorry the US failed education system didn't provide information to assist students from this disaster. Schools and parents need to help kids make good choices, not manipulate them to put their future up as collateral.
So who should pay for her degree? Some one else? Who decides who gets degrees? What is the incentive to keep the cost of my degree down if some one else is paying for it? How many years can I can spend on a "4" year degree before I get cut off?
I hear in this field you really have to be in it for more than the pay and its a shame because the schooling is so expensive compared to the salary. 400k to make 100k yr.
Please keep in mind taking care of your mental health. Taking care of debt is important but compassion fatigue and burn out in the vet industry is so real right now.
Congratulations! If her, I'd just set up my autopayments to the amount I know for sure I'll pay each month on loans. I'd just look at the rest of my income left over and THAT would be my income. Forget the part that comes off the top each month for loans. Three years will be a flash, especially doing something so cool and being a vet. I'd think it would be rewarding,
I’m really questioning Dave´s math skills (and the caller´s). How do people not understand taxes??? If she makes $163k per year, after taxes that is $9,547 per month (after Federal and State taxes (Arkansas)). From there you need to subtract health insurance, car, living expenses etc. Now if she has $394k in student loans, even ignoring the interest rate, if she wants to pay it in 3 years, that is $394k/3 = $131,333 per year so that’s $10,944 per month. So the math doesn´t add up. Even if she lives in shoe box under a bridge and eats at a soup kitchen, she will not be able to pay this off in 3 years. Let’s be realistic here please!
It's okay though because they get to follow their passion and drown in debt 😂 My passion and hobbies don't make me money, they actually cost me money. My career is just a way to fund my passion.
in the beginning she says she the first one in her family to go to college. if she's the first one, she doesn't have anyone to rely on for guidance and since schools push you into taking on the debt and making it easy, she just figured it was the way it is done. give her a break a bit ok? we're not all born into nice stable decent middle-class homes. you do the best you can and learn from your mistakes and try to help others not repeat them.
The only way she’s gonna pay off that mountain of student debt is to work non-stop for YEARS. No days off, no vacations, no life, no nothing. Work, eat, sleep. Repeat.

Frankie, your medical Dr also works on commission!!
Ouch
My wife works at an emergency vets. They have a base pay, then they can be on call, and that’s commission. So to motivate them after already having worked that 40hours, if there’s an emergency but they’re not at work, they get called with a bigger pay than usual and can come in or decide not to. If they’re already at work, having worked an 8hour shift, if they decide to stay for another surgery they also get more . We’re in Canada so I’m not sure if us is the same.
Camcam Cam ok that makes total sense
From what I understand they have a base pay and they get a commission on there work. For example, if no one comes in they get 90k if they do an intense surgery they get a rate for doing that work. Saves the company from over spending, at the end of the day they are still a business.
I can't blame them for not forgiving her loans when she makes that much
@The Ramsey Show - Highlights TH-cam is this actually worth your time like who’s falling for this be real with me😂
@@briancross6620 these scumbags are trying too hard 😂
Uncle Dave, Nephew Anthony lol nice!
Dave Ramsey’s work book saved my financial life from going to a disaster many years ago . I used to follow him on the tv glad I found him here again. Who is the guy with him who is equally knowledgeable?

Beans & rice, rice & beans, also leftovers are a must in this situation.
Dave don't play that AO 😂😂😂 shots fired!
I couldn't be a vet if I needed to take on that much debt to do it.
I'm sorry the US failed education system didn't provide information to assist students from this disaster. Schools and parents need to help kids make good choices, not manipulate them to put their future up as collateral.
$394K debt is nothing if you are a veterinarian! cmon! You pay that off in no time

Education should never be a burden to anybody.
Anthony cracks me up! 😃
Vets make commission???? No wonder they try to upsell you on every possible service

Please keep in mind taking care of your mental health. Taking care of debt is important but compassion fatigue and burn out in the vet industry is so real right now.

Veterinarian who makes commission = DISGUSTING
A 3% 30 year mortgage is about 2k a month. She’s looking at 10 years of 4K plus a month.
Love it... there's no people on your show.. 💥 💥

Yet another caller drowning in student debt… when are people going to learn 🤦🏻♂️
So true!!! I would not be able to breathe with that kind of debt.
@@tduck828 exactly! So much anxiety!
It's okay though because they get to follow their passion and drown in debt 😂
My passion and hobbies don't make me money, they actually cost me money.

This is probably why AO left. Dave’s comments were uncalled for. “You don’t have a show” ok well I quit.
Those interest rates are crazy!
She should not have to pay for her date in the first place.
She definitely won't have time for a relationship trying to clean that amount of debt.
Nothing wrong with that!
Well thank God she chose a profitable profession.

The only way she’s gonna pay off that mountain of student debt is to work non-stop for YEARS.
No days off, no vacations, no life, no nothing.
Work, eat, sleep. Repeat.
I wonder when Dave is going to talk about the lawsuits concerning his work environment!
Don’t hold your breath on it
Or talk about his bankruptcy
Lawsuits are nothing new.... just a normal event when you own a business. Always someone looking to leverage an exit with a big payday. As for his bankruptcy.... I think he's talked about it before... he was young and stupid like a lot of the folks he gives advice to now!
Can someone explain what 'Splash' is?? I have to start paying back student loans in November :(
When did Dave Ramsey start recommending refinancing 🤔
I wonder this too.
Watch is videos, he isn't against refinancing for a lower interest rate. You will typically hear him speak of it on mortgages.
On occasion, he does. Particularly for a lower interest rate. But I have heard him say he doesn't want everyone thinking they did a lot with their debt, they moved it. If the move was beneficial great. But the ultimate goal is to get rid of it.
Wow I Feel like I get a personal compliment from Dave ! I'm a Veterinarian Also. And yes it was very difficult to get through school but the job is awesome I love the Animals! Such a wonderful rewarding job. Thanks Dave :)
Thanks for the feedback!
