In New Zealand we have a very limited variety of hoya available to us, not allowed to import unless they are on the MPI list and quite a few Hoya are sold for $4000 for one node. None to me.
Oh goodness! I heard it is hard to import plants to Australia and New Zealand. It's hard here too, but thankfully not $4000 for a node. Otherwise, I would have a channel about empty pots 😂
Have you heard of tubing on the Guadalupe River in Texas? Great fun...The only time I almost drowned in 5 inches of water...of course pulling a tube with a cooler full of...Beer...Love your videos!
Never heard of any of the Hoyas but I want them all. My favorite would be the last Hoya you spoke about ❤️Hoya Medinillifoli ❤️ The flowers are gorgeous!!
Oh I am glad you discovered them then! They are all super cool and definitely worth having! H.medinillifolia is great, if you can get it. I think it has the most unique flowers!

I think I've found the villages where hoya yuennanensis was found. (bear in mind I'm not a native Chinese speaker, I've just been learning it for a few years, so if there are any mistakes, please let me know). all of the names are in romanization that is no longer used, so I've written down the old and new romanization, the Chinese characters, and the coordinates. Lota - Luoda 洛达 (27° 53' 50" N 98° 58' 38" E) Tsekou - Cigu 茨姑 (28° 0' 30" N 98° 53' 45" E) both of those sets of coordinates would make sense according to what I found on jstor when I searched for hoya yuennanensis (27°55' - 28°2'N) Loudre - I haven't found a village with that name, but I found a different plant which was found in the Mountains of Londjre/Loudre, Mekong-Salween watershed, southeastern Tibet, northwestern Yunnan. so it could just be Gaoligong Mountains, but I can't really pinpoint any specific location. I've also found an entry from the book of the person that collected/identified it, Heinrich Raphael Eduard Freiherr von Handel-Mazzetti (let's all say a thank you for the standard abbreviation - Hand.-Mazz. lmao). he also mentions a village called Wuli (雾里村 28°03'39.2"N 98°36'27.6"E, unfortunately, it's not visible on google maps, only baidu maps work. it is 12 km up north from Bingzhongluo village 丙中洛村) "within the mountains near Salwin by Tschamutong". and, from what I could find, Tschamutong could be a historical name of the county that has the previously mentioned Gaoligong Mountains. this was one of the nerdiest things I've done in a while, feels soooo good 🤓😂
Omg thank you 😭😂 Yes, I read the original entry and had to translate because Latin is dead 😂 I was gonna look up the coordinates but then I realized I am still looking up the first hoya and I need to look up 9 more and record, edit and publish the video 😂 I will definitely look them up now 👀 Long live the nerds :D
I was so excited to read this because I started my hunt by searching for wine grown in this region since "Loudre" seems like a French misspelling of a Chinese town name. And I found a wine grown in Tsekou which led me further down that hole. I found the Hoya taxonomy paper Miro referenced, and it says that Hoya yuennanensis had also been identified in a place called "Tsedjrong". I found a French travel blog in which they passed through that town but they noted the spelling as "Cizhong". By searching for Cizhong in Google Maps I found that it's actually called Ci Zhong Da Qiao, and just south of it is Cigu! I told Miro "this is just a hunch but it seems like Cigu might be the correct spelling of Tsekou" and then he showed me your comment. I'm pumped that I was right! Mind you I don't know a lick about Chinese or its pronunciation. Anyway, I also can't find a town name that a French person might misspell as "Loudre" but here's what I know: this document says it was identified by Frank Kingdon-Ward in "Loudre". It reminded me of "Lourdes". Lourdes is a city in France located just at the base of the Pyrénées mountains and lourdes is also a Basque word that describes an area with a lot of craggy rock, like the base of a mountain (such as the area of Lourdes, France or the area at the base of the mountains where this Hoya seems to grow). Could be a misspelling or mistranslation somewhere along the line. Anyway I don't have any conclusions but this was a fun read, huh? 😂
@@betsybegonia I've also found Cizhong and went down the rabbit hole and started reading about the Tibetan Catholic Church build there by the French missionaries. they planted the grape vines and, I assume, invited some botanists 😂 also, good job with recognizing the Chinese names! when it comes to documents written before 1949, the romanization can be all over the place. we definitely deserve some Yunnanese wine or maybe a Yunnanese hoya 😂 long live the nerds!💪
Phew, only that it was you, you are so funny. Loved the Hoyas, drunk tubing 🤣🤪. I had to google, I found 2 of them in Thailand, just might have to add them to my next order.
For $4,000 I would just buy a very nice glass greenhouse with temp control. So I can add more hoyas in it. Or does it have to be a hoya? Lol Ps you are looking very nice these days! 😎
It would be interesting to have an updated video on crazy Hoya prices. I paid $30.00 for a 2 node variegated compacted cutting 3 years ago. It has survived but it has only grown about 2 inches. I’m kinda glad I didn’t pay more.😅
I had the dennisii. It died on me because I couldn't figure out the watering. It did not appreciate being underwatered and was prone to rotting. If I'd try it again I probably try semi-hydro with seramis or leca.
@@BasiePlants Very likely. Atleast with me being more on the neglectful side of plant keeping, semi hydro would have helped. I've got my papaschonii and imperialis in passive hydro and they do quite well with the more regular water suplly.
Hi everyone! Just to remark about the H. vangviengiensis, I have this Hoya thanks to a specialty shop where I live selling cuttings of rare Hoyas sometimes and since getting it, it has only put out ONE leaf (over the course of a little more than a year). So VERY slow growing... but I got it for a good price though!
In AZ we have the Salt River you can go tubing on. And you bring your alcoholic beverages in coolers and tie them to your tube. We seem to have one or two deaths a year from someone falling over the tube or fall in the water or passing out and drowning. 🤦🏼♀️
You asked, so I'll say that I have only purchased very young, affordable plants. Cuttings, plugs... I have never purchased a full mature plant. I'm cheap, and I love the process of watching them grow and change. I wouldn't pay more than 15$ for a Hoya cutting. I wait until the price comes down. It always does. I don't judge, but I couldn't ever provide that big money for a plant cutting. I think it's dumb. But I also pay no mind to others. If that's what makes them happy, it's fine. Just no poaching activity, of course.... I only purchase from my local nursery, or a valid grower. No imports.
Haha I don’t know why I’ve never noticed your sense of humour before 😅 you’re quite funny! 😂 I would never spend $4000 on a Hoya. I’d rather go on a vacation to Thailand!
Tubing is popular in the US but most people set up an extra tube for the alcohol to have it with them. I don’t hear of a lot of deaths but maybe our rivers are more calm
@@BasiePlants what’s not to like about gently floating down a river with scenic nature scrolling by, sunglasses on, warm sun, fresh cool water below, and a cooler full of ice cold beer? Maybe not always bars but tubers tend to stop on small landings along the way for drinking/smoke breaks before continuing on their merry drinking way along the river. Sometimes have to make sure to lift your butt when there’s shallow rocks if you can’t dodge them since they can be sharp and can sink tubes, scrape butts, and cut your legs up if you aren’t careful, but otherwise it’s good times 😂😎
Drunken tubing, ah the good old days 🤣 I live in Minnesota and have done this many times, in recent memory one one woman didn’t make it. 😬 good thing I’m an old (35) sensible woman with cats & plants to think about these days 🤣
Also from Minnesota - tubing is a right of passage for most of us crazy people we also do it in the winter on the frozen snow covered hills (did I mention crazy) love all the hoyas thank you so much for doing all the research beautiful maps and pictures

Oh wow, I’ve been to Vang Vieng. I was there during that exact timeframe & saw lots of drunk tubing take place. It was clearly very inadvisable. It’s an INTERESTING place!!!
i would like to get hoya praetorii & medinillifolia .. and i hope i able to bloom my dennisii .. the flower is amazing 😍 .. btw i will call that shade of purple dusty purple ? 🤔
Colors are hard! 😂 Oh, I hope you can bloom dennisii fast! And yes, praetorii and mednillifolia are definitely a must for me. Hopefully they will be added to my collection soon.
There were none in the original publication. However, this is what we have so far. A subscriber found 2 out of 3 villages. Lota - Luoda 洛达 (27° 53' 50" N 98° 58' 38" E), Tsekou - Cigu 茨姑 (28° 0' 30" N 98° 53' 45" E). Loudre seems to be the hardest one to find :)
OK so for $4000 Australian dollars I have a couple of things. I got my first car for $4000 in 2004, I got 4 weeks trip in Japan for $4000 (this was in 2013), I got laser eye surgery in Japan for $4000 as well (total for trip $8000) LOL future $4000 spend I can get my first dog and get all its shots and food and cool bed and toys for it. So much more worth it. Dog, or car, or trip, or eye surgery to not need glasses anymore.
All of those are definitely a way better way to spend the money. Get the dog, get the dog 😂 Can't propagate them, but hey, endless joy. My friend has the sweetest Australian shepherd dog. I love her to death. 🥺
@@BasiePlants Oh yes that's the plan. Australian shepherds are so smart and beautiful. their dog must be so gorgeous. So excited for a dog it's been 7 years since my last dog. For $4000? I’d go on vacation. And if I can’t do that I’ll update something in my house. Yikes. I would not spend that on 2 nodes….and I’m Hoya obsessed

That is another great one to have! I still haven't looked much into it, I know cagayaensis is also mentioned there.
Haha I don’t know why I’ve never noticed your sense of humour before 😅 you’re quite funny! 😂 I would never spend $4000 on a Hoya. I’d rather go on a vacation to Thailand!
When you say you like the thinner leaved hoyas, are you talking about thickness or narrowness?
Thickness :) Though I do love a narrow leaf too - retusa, acicularis etc :)
Thanks a lot...
Tubing is popular in the US but most people set up an extra tube for the alcohol to have it with them. I don’t hear of a lot of deaths but maybe our rivers are more calm
Or maybe they don't go to 13 bars and get drunk in each one and then continue? 😂
I think you did wonderful:)
Thank you 💚
@@BasiePlants you are welcome! I had a request for you: can you please talk about H. Noona:) Thank You.
Those jodies silver prices are insane!! I've seen 2 sell. No way I could buy regular compacta new every day and spray paint it for that price
Hahaha I thought of this! They spray paint succulents all the time, I am surprised we are not seeing spray painted hoyas 😂
@@BasiePlants I've seen "albo" monstera with paint and once white tape so why not
@@thefibercircus6313 well, that takes "unstable variegation" to a whole new level 😂
Drunken tubing, ah the good old days 🤣 I live in Minnesota and have done this many times, in recent memory one one woman didn’t make it. 😬 good thing I’m an old (35) sensible woman with cats & plants to think about these days 🤣
Haha 😂 I never tried it but honestly going to that many bars is insane. I wouldn't be able to walk. Then again, tubing doesn't require you to, so... 😂
@@BasiePlants the tricky part is getting out of the tube. That’s a struggle sober some days 😝
Also from Minnesota - tubing is a right of passage for most of us crazy people we also do it in the winter on the frozen snow covered hills (did I mention crazy) love all the hoyas thank you so much for doing all the research beautiful maps and pictures
@@susanjohnson5824 yea indeed, it is a right of passage here 🤣 I suddenly feel like I need to start talking about the weather with another Minnesotan here 😂😂
reading comments before coming to the subject in the video, i had visions of drumken YOU tubing…”miro looks perfectly sober to me” ..haha-(also from minnesota)
Love your videos. You are adorable too.
I am glad to hear you do :)
Oh wow, I’ve been to Vang Vieng. I was there during that exact timeframe & saw lots of drunk tubing take place. It was clearly very inadvisable. It’s an INTERESTING place!!!
Lucky you! I hope I can go one day too!
Tubing sounds fun though
i would like to get hoya praetorii & medinillifolia .. and i hope i able to bloom my dennisii .. the flower is amazing 😍 .. btw i will call that shade of purple dusty purple ? 🤔
Colors are hard! 😂 Oh, I hope you can bloom dennisii fast! And yes, praetorii and mednillifolia are definitely a must for me. Hopefully they will be added to my collection soon.
Do you have the chinese characters for the villages?
There were none in the original publication. However, this is what we have so far. A subscriber found 2 out of 3 villages. Lota - Luoda 洛达 (27° 53' 50" N 98° 58' 38" E), Tsekou - Cigu 茨姑 (28° 0' 30" N 98° 53' 45" E). Loudre seems to be the hardest one to find :)
I have done some drunk tubing 😂 To be fair the river where the event was hosted is verrrrry slow. There were also cops making sure we had lifejackets.
So when are we driving to Sweden? 🚙
As soon as I free up some shelves 🤣 I ain't coming back empty handed... or coming back 😳
OK so for $4000 Australian dollars I have a couple of things.
I'm looking for an Australian silky terrier or a Cavoodel as my top choice. So much love and puppy hugs. Oh, I'm sad now I need to buy a plant to fill the puppy-sized hole in my soul. LOL
🖤 I’m melting 😂👈
Im disappointed i didnt get poetry about the dusk.😂❤❤❤
❤️❤️
I've never had that much money to buy anything....my imagination won't even let me think of anything lmaoo
Lol I feel you 😂 What does $4000 even look like? 😂🥲
For $4000? I’d go on vacation. And if I can’t do that I’ll update something in my house. Yikes. I would not spend that on 2 nodes….and I’m Hoya obsessed
I want Denissii. I knew about her and have been searching.
I definitely wouldn't be buying a hoya for $4000. Love the Hoya medinillifolia and Hoya praetorii the most.
What would I buy for 4K? A car!
🤩
carrii’s flowers remind me of little starfish for some reason ☺️
Right?! It is so cute 🥺
kind of reminds me of why I don't drink ...laughing. It's fun until someone gets hurt.
I would absolutely buy a Vespa or another scooter if I had 4K 🤣
Uuuuuh! That sounds like a great idea! You could easily get a Vespa for that money. And some drinks for the cocktail bar 😂
@@BasiePlants right!!! I would have SUCH a well stocked bar hahaha
$4,000 would go straight into my landlord’s pocket. 😭
I would have my home’s interior painted. Weird, right?
I love how nerdy this video is. Aroid collectors don’t understand us. One day we will have that Medinillifloria. Probably worth buying a big plant and propagating it when it arrived. It reminds me of Parma Violeta sweets. Google what I mean it’s a powdery colour
Right? 😂 I get anxious when I am asking aroid related question and everyone is just guessing. I am like... who is the authority around here? 😂
@@BasiePlants Aroid collectors just collect variegated plants as the inflorescence are not stunning 😂
@@frasercook5823 They are in the wrong game :D
