    The Lollar Imperial set comes from a Collings semi hollow : we have a low wind in the neck position and, from what I know, the bridge pickup is a kind of hybrid/in between low wind/regular.
    Classic 57 are the stock pickups of this Gibson 1998 ES-335.
    Amps used : Brunetti Singleman 50 and Friedman mini dirty shirley

    Finally! Somebody on TH-cam comparison demo who can actually play, play in tune, and pull a tone out of their instrument. The Lollars definitely sounded cleaner and more articulate without being thin or brittle. I would like to here these compared to the Duncan Antiquities. Great job!

    The 57's had more of the "honky" nasal quality, and the Lollars had more detail and a bit brighter. Great comparison, and I agree with most everyone here that is sure is a breath of fresh air hearing a player that actually knows how to let the tone of the pickup come through. This is a perfect example of how pickup choice is really personal preference in most cases. Great job!

    Both are voiced for different purpose really. Can’t go wrong either way. 57 for it’s warmth and lollar for cleaner almost single coil-esque feel. Excellent demo!

    57’s on the Neck, for me, sounded much warmer and would be my preference. I would give the the Lollars on the Bridge the edge in that position. I have an ES 339 with 57’s and was considering Lollars - now will just keep my 57’s. Great video, thank you!!

    Thank you for posting. I have 335 1999, the sound on 57Classic is so familiar to me, I love it. Lollar is also great, especially dirty sound of bridge pickup is more emotional than 57.

  • @vince8081

    I like both, it's a matter of preference and playing. I love the clarity and articulation of the lollars for complex chords and soloing (i can push the low mids or bass on my amp or preamp). You cannot get that clarity on the 57, even if these sounds more "classic". And love the fact that my guitar sounds not like everyone else, so Lollars for me.

  • @rommelrivera1186
    @rommelrivera1186 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I dig the Lollars. It's what I have in my ES-335. I agree that they're clearer and more defined across the whole range. The Classics are more gainy, which is a plus if played distorted, but my ES-335 is for blues. I play it through my King of Tone if I want to add dirt and gain. Excellent video! Your playing is awesome!

    57’s when playing through an edge breakup tube amp, and Lollars for more sophisticated music.

  • @sivadyert
    @sivadyert 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    57 neck pickup was juicy and warm for cleaner stuff. But as soon as gain was applied to the bridge pickup, it was obvious how muddy the 57s can be. Lollar are known for the clear, 3d quality to distorted chords. If I was playing jazz or some blues straight into the amp, the 57s would do fine. If I was playing rock, distorted tone, or using layered effects, I’d want the Lollars. Lollars get overall win. I can eq the guitar and drive the front end a tad more to make up for their brightness and lack of gain in certain settings. But you can’t clean up the muddiness of the 57s much no matter what you do.

    Fantastic playing! I love that you played a 335 in style that the guitar is so well suited for. That's how I approach my 335 as well. So this was very helpful. I agree with most of those who say the Lollar are brighter, and have an emphasis in upper midrange where the 57 Classics are warmer with more low kids. That makes the 57 classics sound almost too warm in contrast. But if you had not compared, I would have said; Those 57 classics sound great! Ha. So no dog in the race here. I tend to prefer the more refined sound of the Lollar but they do sound a bit too midrange scooped. I think I might try Throbak's. But I wouldn't be unhappy with the Lollars either. Thank you for a GREAT video comparison. Very well done.

    I find this demo a subjective topic,
    First I bought a set of Gibson 57’s already and they are a solid set. My ears found the Lollars to be very nice but a touch too bright across the spectrum for me. That’s not to say that I would not buy them because I would for the right instrument. I still like the warmth the Gibsons offer across the spectrum and that was my deciding factor. Both sets very nice pickups for sure.

      I actually hear the Lollars as having a different midrange presence than the 57's. The 57's sound lower midrange dominant, while the Lollar's seem have an upper midrange presence. I guess the mids you miss in the Lollars are the lower mids? Funny how the Lollar midrange jumps out at me and makes the 57's sound scooped in contrast, while you find them lacking. Interesting difference in perception, which is why so many different kinds of pickups are produced. The Fralin Pure PAF bridge that I have has an upper mid presence similar to the Lollar Imperials.

    Do you find the lollars to be less harsh than the Gibson’s? I have two non gibson guitars and I realized they are not as harsh as all my Gibson’s . The funny part is they are both brighter and clearer sounding than all my Gibson’s too.
    But what confused me was being brighter and also WAY less harsh. Playing loudly with distortion is just significantly more pleasant and so I’m wondering if the lollars do this too.
    I also wonder why my Gibson’s sound so brash
