Did MMA before but boxing has always been my first love because my grandfather was a professional boxer who ran with hand weights and hit the heavy bag until the last few months before cancer took him. I thought I was hella old to start amateur boxing, but your thorough instructional videos and positive feedback on your channel inspired me and I found a great coach and a great team. If you can't start young, start smart. I probably won't be an Olympian but I've lost twenty pounds in four months and I'm having a lot of fun!
I really appreciate you taking the time to put these videos together. You have no idea how much all of your videos have helped me improve my technique, speed, and power. Thank you for being so kind and asking for so little in return.
This is very interesting. I always throw the Overhand right like the one Junior Dos Santos knocked Cain Velasquez out with. This is a brand new perspective for me.
that was a good shot, similar to the second version I describe. Liddell also had a lot of success with that type of shot. For a tighter overhand right check out Tyson vs. Golota Round 1
But I have a question though... How is it that these guys don't break their hands? JDS didn't land that punch with his knuckles... It was more like a Palm punch... How is it he didn't shatter his hands on Cains skull? It makes no sense to me. Like how do you land a wide looping overhand like that but with the two knuckles?
Martial Mind usually you break your hand when you hit with the two outside small knuckles, the rest of the hand is pretty solid with gloves. Often these guys hurt their hands without a full break, you just don't hear about it.
the fighting "pocket" in boxing is significantly tighter than it is in mma. Now this is key- in mma BEFORE you're in proper range to throw a technical overhand you are in serious danger of being a) taken down and have to go in a different sport known as brazilian jiu jitsu or b) suffer leg kicks, push kicks and other low attacks that will keep you from boxing with your feet! MMA and Boxing is a different sport, even the best professional boxers such as Floyd, Cotto, Canelo, Pacquiao will have no answer to leg kicks and takedowns. In the same token the best mma fighters won't have an answer when they throw wild overhands from long-range as they are easy to recognize and counter. MMA fighters face off several feet apart. many boxer/sluggers fight so close that the jab and straight right is no longer in play because it is choked-off by their opponent's guard, this is when the overhands, hooks, uppercuts are the deadliest. also there is no back-fisting in boxing as this will give you either two left hands or two right hands in terms of punching angles which really plays a huge factor especially if your game is counter-boxer punching.
Great Videos Man. I am starting my "boxing career" here in Croatia. I am training at home, on the bag. I am 24 years old, 225 pounds (102kg) heavy and 184cm, 6 feet and 2 inches tall. I have a lot to learn, and i hope i can get into real fight (mma or boxing, or kickboxing) one day. I trained wrestling when i was younger so if an mma fighter comes to me, i will try to stay on my feet and knock him out. If we go on the ground, and he gets into upper mount on me i will just try to survive the round. Today, everyone are into mma, and they dont know much about boxing. Some kids dont know who Tyson was, and they have never heard of Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Larry Holmes, Sugar Ray Robinson or Leonard, Oscar de la Hoya, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, David Tua... and many other of the all time greats. Everyone knows who Alistair Overeem and Cain Velasquez or Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva are, and no one knows anything about boxing. Shame, because boxing is an art, and it can be way of living, and i know that you know what i am talking about. Greetings from Croatia! Thumbs up for the Boxing legends!
such a great vid...... we have spoken before and as always your videos have inspired me so much .... the overhand right is my 'go to' punch, but you just fought me some great techniques on how to hide it and work it inside ,,,,, thank you so much :)
left jab duck down left to right cross/right power shot to the body followed by left gazelle hook then maybe you can duck in and give a right uppercut or overhand right?
Keep working on your brand, this is a great video series and you clearly are a skilled coach. You might want to do a regular podcast with guests etc, you have a easy to understand, confident communication style, great for iTunes!
I work in a field where we help small businesses to grow and map out success. Don't focus on the technicalities, just get a computer and start a simple show, invite a few people you trust for the first episode, then upload it to iTunes. If only 2 people listen to it thats fine. Just ship your content. For reference, have a look at episode # 1 of the Joe Rogan podcast and then look at # 500. He's got a good system, you've got the juice to do it.
konkyolife thank you! i've been taking a closer look at the podcast idea, I think that one is going to workout. I'll be on it as one of my next things, much appreciated
As simple as throwing that right uppercut first is I struggle with that. I can right hook to the body and rip up the uppercut through the middle but I havent gotten smooth with an uppercut and overhand
Another clean video. I liked that short overhand. I had forgot about that shot. The first pro that I noticed use it was Mike Tyson when he starched Frans Botha.
Just shows you amateurs know just as much as the Pros always been a fan of you JT luckily had you reply to a few of my comments. Mayne do a vid on Durans inside fighting masterclass? Luckily I've met one of the greatest Amateurs who didn't want to go Pro Dick McTaggert, met him a few times got a pic with him at my Bros boxing show the legend is from the city near me.
All I can throw is a over hand right its like my feel hand then everything else follows hooks body shots but always overhand right jab right step right lol then if I switch my stance same thing lol
thanks for the new video! i am "almost" getting idea to train effectively here in china. there is no boxing club here. at the gym the other chinese boxers are only doing some thai boxing. i went once to some thai club but just once... the chinese boxer all wanted to get a piece of me... help!!!! in the end i train at the gym on my own thanks to your videos: shadow boxing, skipping, bag... i know i am doing many moves wrong. but i don't know which... the only positive thing training in china, i am always surrounded by several chinese people looking at the foreigner boxing. I feel as if i am Mayweather or Iron Tyson lol (i like to think they watch my boxing skills. i know they don't look at the boxing but rather at the foreigner...). i guess i have to post a video open myself to criticisms and ask for advises.
JT Van V I will check when I have some free time and let you know about this. I think the best would be to find a great coach: but where??? When I was 16 years old back in France I took a few boxing classes. And the coach was a former olympic gold medail. His advises were incredible, he could read your move and correct you immediatly, also he could make you work on your weak point using some pads.
I have short reach could you please make a video about what to do against a taller opponent with long reach please if you can it would be very helpful.
What about exit strategies as a southpaw or best counter punch combo's against all major orth shots. Maybe even a review of shoulder roll or peek a boo etc from southpaw stance and is it any more effective or leaves you more vulnerable. Just ideas lol Thanks!
Hey I was wondering your thoughts on cross training my wrestling with boxing? Gonna be a senior in high school looking to wrestle in college, but at the same time after my college career I wanna be a professional mma fighter (100% confident I can) and want to box. An opportunity came to my door (figuratively) and was wondering your opinion on the matter, because I don't want boxing to interfere with my wrestling aspirations, thank you. :)
I think you should definitely do it!! The only way I would recommend not to is if wrestling will offer you scholarship money and you need to be at your absolute best, meaning you need to dedicate all your energy to wrestling. otherwise go for it.
I'm really curious about something, some trainers instruct boxers to hook like this with both hands, raised elbow hand turned towards and outside and making contact with the above part of the knuckles, strongly discouraging hooks with a vertical fist. Why is this? Some also claim it's stronger.
its the biggest debate in boxing technique for some reason, I made a video on it, but even that can't answer all the questions - Fist Position for the Left Hook
JT Van V yea no doubt, you used to fight Pro? and or have a lot of amateur fights? it's obvious to me you know what your talking about and doing. your videos are on point. Do you train Amateur/Professional Boxers as well?
JT Van V Well you're living proof of the point I try to make to people who think they "know boxing." I tell them not to look over Amateur fighters because there are different levels to the Amateurs and not everyone goes pro. I fought amateurs for a few years and I've seen plenty of fighters that didn't go pro who can take it to a lot of these so called pro fighters. u feel me
I have a question? Mostly over hand right which we can see in mma from guys like roy Nelson, Hunt, JDS, Liddel, Fedro. They are not so much use in boxing am i right? if they are do you have some suggestions for matches in boxing with these shots i love them
xx2 I think you are referring to a wide looping overhand right. It has its uses and purpose, but I find most boxers are able to see it coming. Again, a lot of it is timing, and those small mma gloves dont cover much. Roy Jones used to use a wide overhand right once in awhile, I say you can mix it up as long as you are not predictable
JT Van V yeah thank you i thought that wide looping over hand cause i find it as the most destructive ko technique in the mma so i am not sure about boxing. I am boxing myself but i didnt see that wide looping overhand so much but its so powerfull and destructive.
Hey JT, Would you recommend those gloves for sparring and would I need 16 Oz? I just purchased the fairtex BGV 1-B 14 oz but I got a problem to guard myself on sparring after I switched from adidas 14 oz( which was bigger) to fairtex 14 0z. The fairtex glove do not cover much area round the face comparing to adidas or chokem I ve used before. I ve noticed the absorption of the force is not good either with the fairtex glove? What do you sugest?
Musicophilos1 I use these and I love them - www.ringside.com/ringside/catalog/product/view/id/4948/ Ringside has always made more of a padded sparring glove, better for defense but harder on your offense
yes, that is close to my the second version but you are right, with a 10 o clock angle and turning that fist over. I forgot to mention him but I had it on my mind. thanks!
Chuck sometimes throws it from as high as 11 o'clock. Alistair Overeem had an extremely high guard covering up his temples but Chuck came from such a high angle that it landed near the top-front-center of Overeem's head and wobbled him so badly that the fight was soon over. Roy Nelson employs a similarly high and wide haymaker overhand. He used it to decapitate opponents, especially much taller opponents. Dos Santos used it to win his first title. Yeah it's a really hard punch to land because it can be seen from a mile away, but I think it's probably the most devastating punch anyone can throw. I can use it to numb people's forearms even when they're holding thick Thai pads.
So I got a new sparring partner..he has a very tight gaurd ,good reflexes, and he can see punches flying at him with ease..I'm a peekaboo style fighter...he's taller than I am (that's not a problem just information)...I don't want to use that traditional overhand because its easy to see...the one u showed on both ur overhand videos is to strait to get in his guard(I've had some luck using that after a jab to the body, but after a while it gets predictable) I need information or tips to help me pass his gaurd..any tips?
these guys are not easy to fight, guys like Winky Wright or Clottey with that tight guard. Often you have to outwork them and force something through, or draw them out and throw once they start to throw. not easy to break a good guard, it usually takes work. nice looking punch, however being new to the sport it looks like some advanced shit man which for me is a straight up sprained wrist in waiting if i dared load up on a heavy bag like that.

Thumbs up for the Boxing legends!
thanks for your comment, you sound dedicated and I wish you all the best in training
Broners kryptonite
beautiful variations of the overhand. i like the 2:00 overhand because it punishes a weak or low left guard fighting on the inside.
like the way you add the commentary after, nice touch
thanks! that seems to be the style of video working best these days.
Hit like Tyson brains like Ali and a heart like holyfield
This guy is the best there is man!
Great video as always!! Thank you….time for bag work now...
Can't wait to try…..
such a great vid...... we have spoken before and as always your videos have inspired me so much .... the overhand right is my 'go to' punch, but you just fought me some great techniques on how to hide it and work it inside ,,,,, thank you so much :)
Cant wait to try this. Thanks for another great video.
thx bro
Great stuff, gotta try the backing up powershots!
Keep it up!!
Another great video man!! Keep up the good work!
Great video , thanks
Another exelent video
Excellent vid
left jab duck down left to right cross/right power shot to the body followed by left gazelle hook then maybe you can duck in and give a right uppercut or overhand right?
Nice video. Could u do a winky wright tactics video? Those videos are great
Good video!
Keep working on your brand, this is a great video series and you clearly are a skilled coach.
You might want to do a regular podcast with guests etc, you have a easy to understand, confident communication style, great for iTunes!
thanks, I was thinking of doing something like that, or live streaming. I appreciate your feedback, I'm just getting technicalities worked out.
I work in a field where we help small businesses to grow and map out success. konkyolife thank you, I'll check it out. i hear what you are saying, that's some good insight.
I just bought your nutrition plan, looks awesome. Have a look at Steve Maxwell and how he does Skype based coaching too. All connected to his brand.
konkyolife thank you! i've been taking a closer look at the podcast idea, I think that one is going to workout. I'll be on it as one of my next things, much appreciated
great explanation coach.
thank you so much, your boxers train well together!
man you possess so much skill!
Jt4 Boss thx my man, I still wish I could be better!
As simple as throwing that right uppercut first is I struggle with that. I can right hook to the body and rip up the uppercut through the middle but I havent gotten smooth with an uppercut and overhand
Another clean video. I liked that short overhand. I had forgot about that shot. The first pro that I noticed use it was Mike Tyson when he starched Frans Botha.
yeah that was a great shot!
how do you like those ringside gloves for bag work? are they 16s?
Just shows you amateurs know just as much as the Pros always been a fan of you JT luckily had you reply to a few of my comments. Mayne do a vid on Durans inside fighting masterclass? Luckily I've met one of the greatest Amateurs who didn't want to go Pro Dick McTaggert, met him a few times got a pic with him at my Bros boxing show the legend is from the city near me.
All I can throw is a over hand right its like my feel hand then everything else follows hooks body shots but always overhand right jab right step right lol then if I switch my stance same thing lol
When you demonstrated the step back overhand for the taller fighter I instantly thought of Lewis KO'ing Tyson with it
did he step back with that? i'll have to watch that fight again, I remember the step back with uppercut in the first round though
JT Van V Come to think of it no - he stepped in - and so did Mike!
damn, that's one big impact!
hey how many pounds is the bag?
Hey JT Van V, Sometimes in MMA they call that wide winging overhand right a "casting punch", right?
I haven't heard that myself but I'm sure you heard it somewhere. I guess casting like a set up shot?
buen video!, thx
thanks for the new video!
i am "almost" getting idea to train effectively here in china.
there is no boxing club here. at the gym the other chinese boxers are only doing some thai boxing. i went once to some thai club but just once... the chinese boxer all wanted to get a piece of me... help!!!!
in the end i train at the gym on my own thanks to your videos: shadow boxing, skipping, bag...

i guess i have to post a video open myself to criticisms and ask for advises.
another question: where you suggest going on a training vacation? mexico? usa? cuba?
China Non-Stop probably somewhere in southern california would be best.
JT Van V I will check when I have some free time and let you know about this.
I think the best would be to find a great coach: but where???
When I was 16 years old back in France I took a few boxing classes. And the coach was a former olympic gold medail. His advises were incredible, he could read your move and correct you immediatly, also he could make you work on your weak point using some pads.
once again another ski video.!!!
You should make a vid on how to analize a fight
somebody mentioned that and so I have it on my list. Thanks!
nice man your vids helped me alot
I have short reach could you please make a video about what to do against a taller opponent with long reach please if you can it would be very helpful.
I have one, but its a video that I sell here - www.precisionstriking.ca/product/video-head-movement-and-getting-inside/
JT Van V thanks for the link and all the help with your videos dude.
JT Van V any plans for some more southpaw videos? Us southpaws need love too lol!
lol, I don't have any on my list, I need to dig up some new ideas that are southpaw specific. thanks!
What about exit strategies as a southpaw or best counter punch combo's against all major orth shots. Maybe even a review of shoulder roll or peek a boo etc from southpaw stance and is it any more effective or leaves you more vulnerable. Just ideas lol Thanks!

JT Van V Nice video, thanks a lot.I like using both depending on range, positioning, height of the opponent and such...Badass jacket by the way xD
gamwpanagia thank you!
Thoughts on weighted ropes for skipping that thai boxers like to use?
they are good for conditioning, just not fun for speed. Mix it up if you have the option, otherwise it's personal preference
JT your snaps are too legit where are your fights?
Hey man are u in California? I'd like to train with you sometime for sure.
I wish I was bro, i'm up in Toronto, Canada. One day I plan to get down there, tons of boxing in that region
JT Van V yea no doubt, you used to fight Pro? and or have a lot of amateur fights? it's obvious to me you know what your talking about and doing. your videos are on point. Do you train Amateur/Professional Boxers as well?
Darius Robinson i only fought amateur, but I train a mix of guys. thanks for the props bro
JT Van V Well you're living proof of the point I try to make to people who think they "know boxing." I tell them not to look over Amateur fighters because there are different levels to the Amateurs and not everyone goes pro. Hey JT,
Would you recommend those gloves for sparring and would I need 16 Oz?
I just purchased the fairtex BGV 1-B 14 oz but I got a problem to guard myself on sparring after I switched from adidas 14 oz( which was bigger) to fairtex 14 0z. The fairtex glove do not cover much area round the face comparing to adidas or chokem I ve used before. I ve noticed the absorption of the force is not good either with the fairtex glove? What do you sugest?
Musicophilos1 I use these and I love them - www.ringside.com/ringside/catalog/product/view/id/4948/
Ringside has always made more of a padded sparring glove, better for defense but harder on your offense
Thank you JT. I appreciate your help.
What about the type Chuck Liddel used? He pretty much does a wide loop from almost 10 o'clock high coming down.
yes, that is close to my the second version but you are right, with a 10 o clock angle and turning that fist over.
I can use it to numb people's forearms even when they're holding thick Thai pads.
chuck liddel is a dumbass. There's no learning from that can.
JT Van V Hi bro again please answer this question: can an overhand right be thrown like junior dos santos vs cain valasquez used it but in boxing?
Aris K. i've never seen that fight
Love your vids. Wish you were my trainer. Out of curiosity, sow much would you charge for lessons?
*how much
on the youtube channel myfightgym, he charges $5 a month
Send me an email at precisionstriking@yahoo.com and we can talk there. it depends on what you are looking for.
Forgive my humble question but which one of those overhand techniques can be used as a "hay maker" by short people?
The first two. The last one (which is the short drop down) is a more technical shot. The first two can throw more wild and at an arc.
thanks for your question. The seconds version of the overhand right I demonstrate is pretty much a haymaker
Watch Pac vs. Clottey as an example or Williams vs. Wright
Any videos or tips on how to outwork him?
Yes, have you seen my video "hand speed test"? download the beep mp3 file and try to work that for rounds, make your own combos. search for that vid on my channel, I posted it about 2 months ago or less
Are a pro boxer, and who do you think is gonna win Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez?
I'm not a pro. I want Cotto to win but I don't think he'll pull it off. Martinez is too big and too slick.
Hey dude, is that u wearing a basketball short or proper boxing short ?
its just a workout short. I don't usually wear boxing clothing in my vids, sometimes I wear boxing shoes.
Hey JT, who are those people you have tattooed on your upper arms?
sugarsaint mike tyson, malcolm x, william wallace on my forearm
JT Van V thanks so much for the reply, interesting choice
love your channel.
Why does that second variation look like a haymaker? What is the difference?
+The Chad Pad go try them and you can tell me
Ok, I will! Just got my new sparring gloves yesterday and I'm about to work my kickboxing bag. Working up to heavy bag.
Where is this goodlife location?
that's the Delisle club, Toronto
nice looking punch, however being new to the sport it looks like some advanced shit man which for me is a straight up sprained wrist in waiting if i dared load up on a heavy bag like that.
Where is this guy???
Toronto
Hi bro can I ask u a question ??? Why r you not a professional boxer ??
the answer is on the FAQ page at my website - www.precisionstriking.ca
Is there really any money in pro-boxing out side of the big Maywhether fights?
yes a lot more than MMA still, but usually you are signed and they know you are good as an amateur, you win an olympic medal etc. and then you back it up when you go pro.
JT Van V Thanks for your knowledge on the subject!
I call this the marcos Maidana
Hey J, ur videos are always great and useful, I just found a channel recently that is cool too, perhaps u may like to check it out.
