  • Documentary by Carol Marin on Jeff Fort, the leader of the Chicago gangs the Blackstone Rangers and El Rukn. Carol Marin discusses Fort's early days as a commander of the Blackstone Rangers in the 1960s, as well as his street moniker, Angel. Marin starts to recount Fort's biography, including his early days as a Woodlawn community leader and his lifelong illiteracy. He interviews persons who worked in Woodlawn during the 1960s, including a priest and a police officer, about the era's environment. Marin talks to a man who knew Fort when he was a teenager. She narrates the Rangers' transformation into the Black P. Stone Nation.

Went walking through those Fort doors to party many nights. I had no idea that those raids that we got caught up in were for anything other than having underaged kids amongst the crowds of young adults partying til 6 in the morning. Partying in the Fort was some of my favorite childhood memories. We were hurt when they tore it down.

Lol, there’s coffee shops, private schools, a yoga, studio, and even a vegan joint (called Conscious).

I lived in the midst of it all. The times were magic, it was fearful and very violent. Jeff's education came from the streets. From what I witnessed.... Disciples seem to always try and take excursions in B.P.S. hoods. Such as one night we were at 61st Dorchester ( 1966 ) about 40 Disciples matched into our hood and singing
" wade in the water ..... Disciples gonna take over Chicago "... A few Conservatives ( Stones ), his on roofs in alleys with 12 gauges and hand guns...they then let loose as bodies fell, people ran and just like that the marchers scattered running westward to Disciples hood. I was Apache Stone....the shawtys and we were Apache Racketeers and not by choice . ... Recruitment..... We moved but loyalty remained. Yet recall all leaders and members.

What was a gang, a gang at that time was for the people, but things got out of control. Because the system saw what they could trick the gangs into doing. At one time it was unity to stand strong against the system, that was abusive to the people, but we as a people were never introduced to power the right way, which we follow behind the other cultures that created America to be like it is. Where our systems were connected with the corrupted lifestyle they injected into the people. That starts pushing the lifestyles throughout all communities, and the leaders from those areas only knew how to function the same way, but on the political level. That clouded the minds of the people on both levels. That the system profited on the violence, and today things are still going on the same.

You need to realize why this has occured. Black on black crime stems from a deeper issue in our communities that began way back during slavery. Generational PTSD gets passed down and repeated. Not having access to basic resources, being racially oppressed, economical disadvantages , lack of proper education, poverty and then the U.S. bringing drugs into poorer minority communities and then over police those same communities to lock up the drug dealers. Gangs were initially created because of the police brutality but once guns and drugs were introduced...it was a recipe for disaster.
