    Why I actually really like about Back to the Future’s time travel is it’s inconsistency. On one hand Marty has to make his parents meet otherwise he won’t exist. But I’m doing that he changes the future, despite it already being the future. It’s silly, it’s inconsistent, and it’s just a damn good movie!!

    • @mr.burn-out6553
      @mr.burn-out6553 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Doc Brown could've reached out to Marty to create a stable time-line, considering he embraced knowing events beforehand and keep being a time-traveler at the end so he might've corrected some paradoxes to help his pal.
      Doc did knew where Marty and Jennifer would be after the DeLorean got turned into junk.

    • @Kirs..
      @Kirs.. ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Ok, here is something that people miss about back to the future. There is such things as *branching timelines* , there isn’t a *single* timeline that is constantly being changed by Doc and Marty, but instead is an *entirely different* timeline where the future has been changed by Doc and Marty. This is why Marty was able to almost fade from existence, and why old Biff was able did fade from existence in a deleted scene after he returned from the past.

    • @HiperPivociarz
      @HiperPivociarz ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I'd actually argue it's inconsistent. Sometimes they act like Marty's actions cause changes to the timeline, and sometimes they act like he was always supposed to go back in time. The guy becomes the mayor because he's inspired by Marty. Chuck Berry writes his song because he hears Marty play it. Then why is the guy Mayor in the original timeline? Why does that song exist in the original timeline?

      Exactly. When somethings a good movie, people are more willing to forgive inconsistencies. If it’s a bad movie, it’s going to be very harshly examined, but almost everyone who does examine BTTF do it in such a way that it’s obvious they don’t really care too much, because they like the movie, and wouldn’t want to change it even if given that chance.

      The one thing I like about Doctor Paradox in Ben 10 was that he went insane being trapped in a infinite time loop......then got bored of it and went un-insane through free time and will power, allowing him to freely travel time through complete understanding of it since time is an illusion and knowing how a trick works makes you able to work around it

    Thing I find funny about Back to the Future 1 is that he has to fix his parents otherwise he disappears. A Paradox. Yet in the second one Biff changes the past, meaning Doc is imprisoned before he builds the time machine...a paradox that means when Marty goes back to the future there are now 2 Marty's because he couldn't go to the past. Yet for some reason he is still there even though he couldn't be there due to the paradox.

      @DrMcFly28 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Because in BTTF the time stream doesn't instantly react to changes, it allows time for course correction and slowly morphs into a new reality. If you do want a rationalization, it may be that the timeline has a tendency towards snapping to its baseline and will favor changes and delays that would ultimately help avoid paradoxes. It doesn't really make sense, but time travel in general never passes scrutiny, so I'm ok with this particular suspension of disbelief.
      There's a cool science fiction story that I read as a kid where a person gets slowly erased out of existence, first witnessing subtle changes around him, then gradually more drastic ones when ultimately his family disappears, people on his job don't recognize him anymore and finally he disappears altogether. Now that I'm older I'd probably interpret this as some sort of allegory of the Alzheimer disease or simply aging, but when I was young I always felt the story had a strong BTTF vibe, as if some unknown time traveler made a change in the timeline, and the protagonist of the story was simply a collateral victim, witnessing the timestream slowly adjusting to a state where he has never been born at all.

    • @lord_egg

    I've always liked the idea of split Timelines. For example: you are given the choice of either getting out of bed the moment your alarm goes off or wait another half hour or so. Each moment causes a split that has minor or massive consequences, for better or worse. Like the moment Marty doesn't race and get in an accident: that's a moment that should have been a split Timeline.
    Nothing is really set in stone since those stones could be paved in another direction or go down the one built but later hit another fork in the road.

    i absolutely love the conclusion that maybe the future *is* written, but if we don’t act with love and compassion those parameters, *that’s* when things go wrong. people often think that the song “the power of love” has little to do with these films, but it really has everything to do with them - love is the transformative force that saves/changes many characters, and even the timeline itself. it sounds a little cheesy, but i’ve always loved that emotional, human core to an otherwise action-packed trilogy of films.

    Yeah, time travel is one of those really fascinating discussions anyone could have. Like there's a wide variety of ways of going about it.
    Paradox Theory, Multi-Universe theory, The Branching Timeline Theory, the Theories that counter Paradoxes in every conceivable way, etc, etc
    The way I like to go about it is a sort of Multi-universe Theory. There's never one true timeline, only a series of timelines based on decision after decision. Possibility upon possibility. Meaning that no matter what, there's always some sort of universe where things are very much different.
    As an example; a universe where Shrek 3 was actually good. Or a universe where the highest grossing film is The Room of all things.
    And maybe a universe where Ash Ketchum has piloted a mecha at least once. Who knows if that's even possible? And that's why I like Multi-universe theory. Makes things wacky as all hell.
    Besides, if a guy can turn Shaggy into an anime protagonist with Scooby being able to use a gun against motherfucking Yosemite Sam... then I think basically anything is possible at that point.

    Yeah I feel like the we missed the major idea of branching timelines. Also personally I see it as what I like to call "the corkscrew timeline" where you appear to be heading back in time but its still actually linear for the person time traveling, so marty will only ever experience a timeline that he's in and thus the events technically are closer to happening a second time rather than changing the past. Think of a "do-over" where the first attempt doesnt stop existing, but we count the second tiem.

    I think in Back to the Future, you can change the future, but not the past. If you change your own past (or parts of the past that affect your present enough to change your life), you create paradoxes and that can't happen. But you are totally free to go into the future to find out what will happen if you make certain choices and then go back to your present and make different choices. This doesn't create a paradox because you create a separate timeline once you make that different choice.

  • @HeavyMetalMouse

    An interesting point that's been raised about time travel stories, is they suggest that even a small change in past events can dramatically change some, but not all, future events. Biff and George's interactions being changed in the past leads to changes in the details of their lives in the present, but he still gets married, has (and doesn't have) the same set of kids, lives in the same location, etc. Small changes are seen to create anywhere from no effect at all to catastrophic effect on various aspects of the future.
    The difficulty in deriving any meaning from this is that there is no way to know, in advance, what a given action will, or even *can* change, except in the most trivial of examples - and even then, it can be weird. Anything you do could change the future, but the result is *chaotic*, in that the future's response to past changes is unpredictable, and even the relative sensitivity of any given response to a change of any magnitude is difficult or impossible to know.
    This raises the simple question: what does it mean to have free will, when you can't possibly comprehend the true impact of your actions? If there is no way to meaningfully understand the results of doing versus not doing something, or doing one thing versus another, then isn't the 'choice' ultimately illusory and meaningless? On the other hand, to the limited degree that we *can* understand the impact of our chosen actions, those choices would seem to have at least *some* meaning; and a lack of pure certainty does not negate that some results are more or less plausible or likely, which is not nothing - but those aren't the sorts of things that Time Travel stories tend to center around.
    On the other other hand, if a choice *does* have a predictable result, then doesn't whether or not you value that result in context ultimately determine whether you 'choose' it? Are you really free to choose when one alternative has significantly greater positive or negative consequences with sufficient reliability that you can't ignore them? If choice is meaningless *without* knowledge of the impact, and choice is nonexistent *with* knowledge of the impact, is 'free will' even useful as a concept?

    • @juanausensi499
      @juanausensi499 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was quite the insight, but i want to make a little point. Free will is not less free because you can't know the ramifications of your actions. It's just uninformed free will. And while it's true you can't know all the consecuences of your acts, you certainly know the most immediate ones (depending on your knowledge of the world and your intelligence). So every act of free will is semiinformed free will. Has it meaning? I don't know, i don't even know if the question 'has it meaning?' has meaning.
      Another thing to consider is that you can, most of the time, rectify the unintended consequences of your actions by taking corrective actions. Our endeavours are always half-planning, half-improvising.
      Free will can be defined as 'doing as you want', but... Can you change what you want?

    The mear fact that marty can change the future by altering the past shows free will exists. If it was all deterministic, marty wouldnt be at risk of becoming erased because him succeding was pre determined. Martys parents also werent forced together by the universe, but by martys actions. They still had the will to say no. Deteminism in the physics sense also falls apart when quantam mechanics is taken into account (at least with what we know so far).

    I think you are confusing terminology here. It's not time travel that takes away Loraine and George's free will, it's Marty! If anything, the fact that they don't go out after Marty changed the circumstances implies that they HAVE free will. If Marty was born regardless if his parents met this way or not, that would imply they have no free will and are destined to marry no matter how much you change their first meeting.

    Doc is the agent of free will here in the trilogy. A godlike character. Doc is managing the events so they turn out right, even if some temporal portions of Doc are unaware and naive.
    Too many things happen just perfectly to be chance. Calling for Marty to be at Twin Pines.
    The lightning strike return.
    The disappearance of Lone Pines Marty with Twin Pines Marty (with his shitty childhood memories) taking over Lone Pines Marty's idelic life.
    The adventure in 2015 to manipulate Marty to fold back on himself in 1955.
    The rescue from Biff Tower
    The rescue at the tunnel
    Both certain death.
    For all we know Marty died thousands of times until Doc got the timing just right.
    The last scene is ELB Doc, the time lord, letting the two kids out of his 130 year loop to actually live their lives as free agents, BUT WISER.
    This is somewhat City on the Edge of Forever as The Guardians take away free will and manipulate Spock and Kirk. Kirk must go back to 1932 because he always has, since there is a Starfleet and a non nazi Federation that puts him in the part of space that allows him to go back. He had to fall in love, because he had to get Edith killed. He didn't just "not save her" he put her on the other side of the street, said wait here and lured her to her death....because they were on a date night.
    The writer of these time stories is always the aTemporal God. Serling and Ellison knew this quite well.
