Reed, thank you for these extended videos. Unlike the TV news, these long, uninterrupted shots really give one time to process everything. It's very helpful and far more digestible than news that jumps around from one shot to another.
If there are any storms this winter, there will be mudslides coming down from those hills. Some of my strongest childhood memories are news stories about Malibu. The mudslides were crossing the road into their front doors, while storm waves were crashing on their backdoors. Those property owners would be wise to clean their lots while delaying any rebuild until the burned hillside stabilizes and gets some regrowth of vegetation.
Another post here just saying that I would love to see this land return to pristine, beautiful beach. It's ridiculous that there were houses here. There wasn't even enough room, in rational terms.
The juxtaposition of the beautiful sunset with the horror of the devastation is really disconcerting. The scale of this tragedy is only beginning to reveal itself. Much love to everybody up north, from San Diego ❤.
Lol! What is a smart city? Do you mean people-centric, walkable neighborhoods? Those go in densely populated areas. This area wouldn't work at all for the ideal car-free, midrise community. This will just go back to being fancy neighborhoods. But hopefully they will build them in more defensible ways with well maintained wild spaces in between. Rich people mansions aren't a target of planning for affordable, walkable urban spaces. Their tax money is. 😅
I know someone that lost their house in the Eaton fire . Less than an hour to pack up and get out. They lost it all as so many have. Thanks for all you do Reed and crew. You're awesome.
Honestly, I hope that they keep the coastline clear of houses. Although it's completely devastating to see the damage, and the loss of homes, the potential for redevelopment of this area back to the natural state is now achievable. The coastline should be for everybody not the Uber rich.

Wow, this is so horrendous. Nothing is safe when an inferno, fueled by crazy winds, roars through. Excellent coverage Reed. So glad you’re there. I spent my whole young life traveling up and down PCH. That whole stretch was beach houses and you couldn’t get to the water or see the ocean all along that stretch. And now you can see the ocean from the road. And all those houses are burnt to the ground. I never thought that that was even possible!
I sincerely hope they eminant domain most of it and rewild it. The native coastal chaparral is uniquely drought and fire resistant and of course thrives in salt. So sea water pump stations can be set up to douse fires from the ground, all the way up to the plateau. The salinated water won't harm coastal chaparral. In fact, the detritus will add nutrients to the soil. The PCH doesn't only get fires. It also suffers from frequent rockfalls and mudslides. Keeping it mostly wild will rebuild the soils and anchor the sandstone. The rich folks can argue over who gets the remaining property. Charge extra taxes and use that money to optimally maintain the wild spaces.

I'm not a fire fighter, but I'm in the fire protection industry. That was not just a fire, that was an extremely hot fire. Wood and general construction material (the bulk of fuel for this disaster) don't burn that hot...not hot enough to melt/bend structural steel like that.
Tell us a time stamp where you see melted steel, I didn't see any. As far as bent/twisted steel, it doesn't take all that much to weaken it, so it just comes down to how over-engineered the strength vs load was to begin with. Usually, the answer is "not much". Another factor is that a fire surrounded by other fires (here on 2 or 3 of the 4 sides) gets hotter than where the fire is a lone structure radiating heat away to cooler things around it. When surrounded by walls of flames from other things burning, there is no radiational cooling of the burning structure. Most of the bent steel was actually caused by having a combination of wooden structure, steel structure, and concrete structure. Once you remove all the wood, the steel wasn't designed to hold the building up by itself. You'd really need to see the plans of each building to know what happens once all the wood is on fire.

These areas have been devastated by rainstorms and mudslides, yet they have been rebuilt each time. Fires continue to destroy their homes, and still, they rebuild.
