  • The fans in switches from Ubiquiti (both Edge and UniFi) are rather noisy. You can replace the fans in your switch with much quieter ones. I chose fans from Noctua, which are known for their quality and quietness.
I used two Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX fans, which you can purchase from Amazon via the affiliate link.

A little tip; drill those holes with the case upside down so the metal swarf falls onto the work bench. Also, almost all fans have rotation and air flow arrows on one side face so you can tell without powering them up. :)

That's brilliant. I'll try to remember that for next time.

Now cut out the fan grills in the black cover for a "WhyTF didn't I think of that!?" moment. :)
    Both Sides...

Your comparaison with a jet engine sound is interesting. So 4 fans replaced with 2 obviously less powerfull fans. For a jet, take a boeing 747, replace the 4 reactors with 2 less powerfull reactors. Will make less noise... not convinced with the flying part...
With your mod, not convinced with the cooling part, sorry.

I'm not running my switch in a data centre, so ambient temperatures are quite low. It's also mounted vertically (fans pointing up) to take advantage of convection. I'm also not running POE on every port and only using about 12 of the ports. It runs warm, but well within its limits. With my previous switch, I disconnected the fans entirely and it ran fine - although I wouldn't be comfortable about running fanless with this Edgeswitch.
