The average person in the West doesn’t care whether Russia or Ukraine controls places like Crimea and certainly doesn’t want to risk nuclear war over it. There could and should have been a negotiated settlement to this mess long ago and if something catastrophic happens we’re responsible for it too, not just Putin.

Before the seizure of Crimea in 2014, I thought of Putin as a smart, jovial guy, the kind you'd like to have over for a backyard barbecue. Crimea was concerning but then came the Ukraine invasion and it became clear that this guy was actually another Hitler with territorial ambitions and no regard for loss of human life - military or civilian, Ukrainian or Russian, young or old. A sad and tragic situation that was and is entirely unnecessary.
