Is Russia proving today how China can win tomorrow? | Defence in Depth

  • China is learning all sorts of useful stuff from the war in Ukraine about how far to push against established international norms; how to inoculate one’s country from a global backlash against bad behaviour and how to drive a wedge between one’s adversaries.
All this has come at virtually no cost to Beijing as the Kremlin has copped most of the flak. So, as he casts a hungry eye at Taiwan, does Xi Jinping see Vladimir Putin as a very useful tool indeed?
In this episode of Defence in Depth, Dominic Nicholls, The Telegraph’s associate editor, explains how, by invading Ukraine, Putin has shown his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping where the edges of Western tolerance for aggression lie.

Yes. The events leading up to the seizer of eastern Ukraine in 2014. In particular, Russia's use of Wagner mercenaries, 'little green men', regular troops, nationalist groups sent in from Russia, special forces, 'local' militias, Igor Girkin, MH17, and continued kremlin denials of involvement. That is a part of the war that incredibly gets very little focus.

Ukraine and Taiwan are fundamentally different situations. EU+UK reacted dramatically over war in Ukraine because of the potential of a "Hot War" on their doorsteps. Taiwan ... is not close geographically to any Western countries. One thing Xi learned from Ukraine is that Western Sanctions don't really work economically from domestic availability point of view (international banking and transfers yes, but resources no). Western allies have resisted any troop involvement in Ukraine, and it is extremely unlikely they would get involved in Taiwan. Taiwan is also about 1/20 size of Ukraine (actually only about 25% larger than Crimea). Xi knows he is playing with almost a full hand when it comes to Taiwan.

If International law applies to the internationally recognized borders then Taiwan is part of China by international law.
If the internationally recognized borders no longer apply, like in Ukraine, and we apply that to Taiwan. Then the Ukraine war can be a precedent for Taiwanese independence, and at the same time also be a precedent for China to claim Vladivostok.
If Historical ownership applies, Then China has a claim on both Taiwan and Vladivostok.
But in the case of Ukraine no only Russia but also Turkey and Greece will have a claim on Crimea.
And makes me wonder what does Mongolia gets to claim?
Don't get me started on Europe, that'll be a full on free for all.

Interesting historical tid-bit: when the People's Republic of China took their rightful United Nations seat in 1971, against all attempts by the U.S. and U.K. to prevent it, a plan was then hatched to attempt to give "Taiwan" it's own U.N. seat, separate from the "China" seat. This attempt was voted down by the U.N. General Assembly because everyone knew, even back in 1971-1972 that Taiwan was obviously a part of China. Nothing has changed, other than the U.S. and U.K. attempting to convince everyone that Taiwan is a "country", as this reporter just did.
Here's an interesting thought experiment: lets say, hypothetically, that Taiwan was an "independent country". What are its borders? Taiwan claims all Chinese territory, the 11-dash line covering the entire South China Sea, the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands, Mongolia, etc. No one even bothers with this question because its status as a "nation" doesn't even make sense.

"Useful idiot" is actually a term that Stalin himself coined to describe Western leftists who ignored his atrocities - the Holodomor, the Show Trials, the Great Terror - in the 1930's.

That there is a slight inkling the guy might have some wee bit bias seeping into his "arguments". Looking at it a bit more neutral, the first sentence has the word "only" too much in it. While NATO expansion certainly was a red line for Russia - one we've been ignoring for years, it's certainly not the only reason. But, hey, more nuance might have tempered the narrative he was trying to spin....
The latter is actually something the West came up with themselves. No Russian official actually said that. At most, they said they had a common history and many there were culturally or ethnically Russians - which is true, certainly in the Eastern and southern parts (not so much in the Western part of Ukraine). Again, that sort of more nuanced and objective reflection of reality might come into his way of his narrative, and thus he prefers to keep it black-and-white, as anyone trying to influence people with propaganda will do. Russia does it too, for sure, but it's always funny to see how we, the West, condemn their propaganda, but do not bat an eye when we're doing it. We're almost literally blind to our own biases.

Big difference between boycotting Russian energy, which the west needs, and boycotting the manufactured goods of China, an industrial competitor. If China attacks Taiwan they can expect their exports to come to a screeching halt causing an economic collapse.

Let’s not forget that China and Russia were holding joint military operations when they announced their “no-limit partnership” - just days before the invasion. I think the plan was for putin to quickly take Ukraine and then xi would quickly take Taiwan. The world got very lucky that this didn’t happen because Xi and Putin would have become exponentially more powerful had Ukraine not been such a smart and tough country 🇺🇦💪🙏🫶🇺🇸
