A rush job came in the shop the other day. It was a part made from 4130 chromoly and it was 1-1/4" thick.
while thin wall 4130 tubing can be tig welded without a preheat or post heat treatment, ...Thick 4130 requires a preheat in order to avoid hard and brittle areas.
Preheating slows the cooling rate and drives off moisture and is needed for high strength low allow steels like 4130 and 4140 in order to avoid cracking and hard brittle zones.

Your use of the oven reminded me of a fella I know who in the 70's went over to his grand father's for Christmas dinner. Well his grand father was a aircraft engine builder and had just finished painting 2 magneto cases. To cure the black paint made in the 70's he used the household oven.
Well when the turkey needed to go into the oven the magneto's came out and turkey went straight in!!!!!
I use my tig finger xl every day! It makes life so much easier! Wish I had it 15 years ago. Haven't even opened my standard size tig finger cause I love the xl so much.
We appreciate you more than you know
I just finished welding school here in Tampa like 3 weeks ago.some guy bought the knock off version off eBay /Amazon I can't remember, but it sucked.spend the extra $5 get the Tig finger from weldmonger store.its a must-have.
Live and learn.
Your videos are the best short and concise to the point with no fluff and your humble unlike some high and mighty pricks on TH-cam keep it up
you still got it Jody! the 'chuck norris' of welding
Awesome info as usual sir, always learning something. And you have the ultimate welding store with some really handy stuff for sale
I could use a lesson from U. Gas, stick & mig welded most of my life, but just starting in tig now that i,m retired. Love your videos
Just the explanation about why to preheat and what happens makes this a super video.
That twist head torch with that furick cup looks slick. Very handy
I admire you fellows that can weld like that. I'm sure it took you years to learn it and it does look like art. Gonna try welding replacement rockers on my truck with a Harbor Freight welder I borrowed from my brother, so we'll see what happens.
How did it turn out?
Did you practice on scrap parts first?
For those who want to preheat thicker material, the goal is to get complete heat soak throughout the material. If the surface temp is good, but core temp is low, that is improper preheat and can lead to problems.
HAPPY LABOR DAY. JODY . Thanks for sharing your knowledge
The tig finger works awesome for cast iron preheat repairs also
Hey, that bottle hanger is brilliant. Great channel!
I'm going to place an order too.
Yes, Jody deserves all these subs!
Just bought some parts from your shop. My thanks for doing awesome videos and for helping me learn
You made that look so easy... thank you for all your content 🙏
And it's clean and...don't tell my wife. lol
Was hoping that someone made that exact comment :) lol Thank you
hey joy from greetings from Colombia I like your tutorial videos are very good to learn much more and apply them in the work, keep uploading more videos thank you very much.
can you elaborate when welding chromoly with other type of steel for instant low carbon steel thank you love your program
A good Labour Day to you too sir
Hi Jody, when are you going to bring out coffee mugs, be great for us guys on on the tools a good way to show the work mates hands off that's my mug during our meal breaks, or an addition to the man cave 👍😜 cheers David. From Australia
Great video again. Hope you have a great and safe Labor Day
Jody can you check the difference in 5554 alum wire for 5454 transport alum. Aka tankers and flatbed repairs. Our shop uses 5654 but im noticing alot of failure on a common tank leek repair over frame rails. They say 5554 is an exsact match for 5454 alum. %2 magnesium. Where as 5654 is sometimes 12%. Please
Awesome as always.... But I have to ask: why in the world wouldn't you have an Oxy Acetylene rig?
I just bought a used double oven for this reason. no more screaming matches!
But no more shop cookies!
oh, and did i forget their in my shop not in the house...
Atta boy!😉😂
Thanks Jody - what Tig torch were you using just saw I-head?
what is the second part for ? , looks almost like a tractor trailer hitch
Great vid, Had a? Is that normal after you finish a pass and you stop the arch that the tungsten sticks to the job and you have to pull it off? Or is it the type of machine you have?
Would .125" 4130 plates need to be preheated? I'm basically welding a large gusset across a plate of about 9x7" at a 45 deg angle.
Blue tooth headphones? What do you recommend? I use HF start on alloys,9-10 weld day wired head phone don’t last and go up down in volume change songs ,Siri? Any advice is appreciated! Please keep the videos rollin!
Hello sir i want to ask, how do i know the welding speed of a material? Because in my opinion the welding speed is one of the welding process..
Thanks
Great video Jody!!!
Can you weld metal other than aluminium to aluminium? If so what filler would you use and what are the limitations?
how do you decide when to weave or not? thanks for sharing!
Can i use gasless tig welder for chrome molly?
What about ER80 S D2? That's my 4140+4130 go to rod. Preheat to 550-600 and mineral wool slow cool.
I forgot about your store, but just bought a TIG finger on Amazon, think it was still from you though.
What type and size tungsten electrode did you use?
Is that a new torch? Doesn't look like the CK flex loc ? Nice work love the videos
Suggestion / Question : Reverse direction of second Pass to nicely fill slope off ??
Hanks for your videos .. you know your stuff!!!
I was going to cut up an old bicycle and make something of it with my everlast welder. I never realized that I should know what kind of metal is in the frame first.
Which investor recommends me to buy soldering with 1coated electrode, 2 tig tungsten electrode , 3 mig solid and tubular wire thanks for the recommendation
What happened to the Flametech Duel flowmeters on your store?
Datum you do pretty work Sir.
nice work and lesson as usual..the store is great ,, thanks
Hi, I have some questions for you. I work on nickel-based parts (superalloy rené 108) .but when I reload the parts with tig welding the problem I find cracks in the weld bead, even I did the preheating before welding. Thank you for your advice.
You the joda of welding jody. Thanks for the lessons
love your videos love your shop !
Hi Jody, what gas flow rate were you using ?
Another great video! Thankyou Jody!!!
Good job Jody!
Jody, who in Australia are official sellers of your Tig Finger? Is Amazon? I'm keen to pick one up, but would like to support you.
Howzit Jody, you have some really great content!! I wanted to know how you are liking the weldtec torches?? compared to the CK lineup... personally all we use at work is CK and I like it but if there is something better I'm all for it. I do a lot of out of position welding, cramped spaces, and often with a mirror. Thanks
I feel like I should take notes sometimes with these videos.
Great idea!😉
Awesome video Jody 👊🏻

always learning from you, thanks so much,
Hello Jodi (hope I'm spelling your name correctly), I have been trying to silver solder a drill chuck-key to an old chrome socket wrench (to make a 'T' handle extension from it) that I've punched the center out of, but the solder wont stick, would you please tell me why?
I anything but expert on the subject of metal joinery. However, chrome may be the key word here. My hunch is the flux you are using is not wetting the chrome plated surface. Try grinding/sanding the chrome off, where you want a bond.
Another good video!
Is stainless filler okay for cromoly? 316 s.s. on 4130 round tubing.
Hopefully Jody responds with more intelligence, but I asked that same question of the Lincoln School of Welding folks, and they said the 316L is not to be used for 4130, I think it forms martensite in the weld. I used to use the 316L on 4130 kart frame repairs since 316L has molybdenum in it, but apparently that is not a good idea. Lincoln recommended ER80SD2 to keep close to the same tensile strength as the 4130. I think the 309L is probably fine.
You're THE man, sir.
Hi, I wonder if you could shed some light on big welding with mig. My current job has me to use a single bead with a width 20-30mm I'm struggling to find the right weave to prevent undercut. I'm welding inch plate. It's for heavy machines diggers etc. I've not seen anything for such big material. I'm filling single V joint to butt | / I should cap in 4 welds
Simple answer to that..... run it with stringer beads. Much much better outcome.
That's ridiculous. 1" bead width single pass, MIG? What size electrode? I barely do 1" with 1G tandem sub-arc with 3/16" electrodes! Your depth-to-width ratio must be scary. To your question though...maybe actually try dwelling slightly longer at the toe and as always - check your welding parameters.
Thanks for the replies guys, it certainly is a challenging weld. I've since found a method that yields a half decent result. I'm filling it in about 5 passes, and yes matt that's the right idea to pause a bit longer on the toe. It's hard to explain what I'm doing without pictures. Thanks for the advice guys. Oh and using 1.2mm wire matt, for the cap I do a backwards C pattern to stretch it out to 30mm width
thanks jody.....
When I was in welding school, I didn't see any preheating in any books.
Commenting on my own comment...
(per, the wife) she had reminded me that I was probably too stoned to remember "any School" work of my welding School. Shame on me for knowing that She's right. Of course I know you gotta preheat lots of metals.
@TMoD7007
Totally agree w/ this statement. I do see it all the time (TH-cam). Also students weren't able to acquire this type of alloy...... thanks
Why er70 (I assume s2 or s4) instead of an er 80?
Jody I’m trying to get a job with a Magnesium requirement and they use a oxyacetylene torch to do it any “tips and tricks” ?
Don't take the job
fantastic video as always ... thanks much.
Hi Jody,
Do you ship to Australia?
Robert Shepherd Yes he does
What? No cut and etch!?! ;-) Great video!
You read that with how many amps
Where did you learn all this stuff? I know I didnt learn any of this in my welding college but I might have just gone to the wrong one..
Probably an actual apprenticeship
Another great video!
Love my Tig finger had them to order me 3 of them...LOL
Thankyou I'll try that.
Hi Jody do you ship to the uk
Vaux_Wolf
Yes! We do, but if you want TIG Fingers, Oxford welding supply is an authorized dealer in the UK:
www.oxfordweldingsuppliesltd.co.uk/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?ProductID=9651634&A=SearchResult&SearchID=2116413&ObjectID=9651634&ObjectType=27
Or for the xl version:
www.oxfordweldingsuppliesltd.co.uk/CatalogueRetrieve.aspx?ProductID=9651633&A=SearchResult&SearchID=2116414&ObjectID=9651633&ObjectType=27
Hope that is helpful 😊
I got my TIG finger bundle direct from weldmonger.com to Northern Ireland (UK) either, as much to support the videos as any other reason. $15.50 shipping and it arrived pretty quickly.
Lyn Collier thanks for the help👍🏻
sickaroll thanks for the help 👍🏻
Was the heat in Celsius or Fahrenheit.?
fahrenheit
Or calvin
Boy you are the best
Good stuff thanks for sharing.
How many times has your wife came into the kitchen and found a chunk of metal baking in the oven? Lol
Thank you
Very good
There possibly could be a better welder in the world but they haven't been born yet.
You never really said “Why” to preheat like how will it affect the metal before and during welding
BigAL slows the cooling rate and drives off moisture which can cause hydrogen embrittlement. I’ll go into this topic deeper in future videos
If you didn’t heat up that big ring it sure would have fast chilled that weld.
12:34 I'll bet it is.
Hey Mr. TH-cam, don't tell his wife....... shhhhhhhh !!!!!! ah ah ah!!!
Hay why don't people mig aluminum
Or Tig steel
Plenty of people wire feed aluminum.
Hey Jodie's Wife,,,, guess what's for dinner. :)
Food ?
That's the bulkiest piece of chromoly I've ever seen. All the bulky steel that I see is carbon steel that you can find anywhere. I don't weld bulky exotic metals because I only work with sheet metal.
But yeah! if I ever weld sheet aluminum or chromoly, I'll preheat it.
Hey Jody, how the heck can china steal your tig finger product and sell them? I assume US patent laws don’t apply to them? What a crooked bunch of people. Keep up the good work!
Crooked as a snake.
so hard to find stick welding videos these days...stickwelding is dying.
