I appreciate that you also tend to alter the ensemble voices so that they don’t always sound human. It helps distinguish the two when listening to the audio alone. (The “ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves” chorus is especially eerie)
Ya know, I had thought the inhuman voices that sang "ruthless is mercy upon ourselves" were other cyclops since they sounded similar to the voices that say, "if no-body hurts you, be silent" during the cyclops saga
In “My Goodbye” with a back up vocals, I always see it as the people from Odysseus’s past (either people he killed or failed to save) swarming around him as if to agree with Athena’s claims. Also, I love that Athena just hypes herself up in Warrior of the mind while Odysseus is singing about her already being great.

My favorite detail is in not sorry for loving you, even though there's nothing stopping her from having her background vocals sound different, (bc she's a goddess), and yet the bg vocals still only sound like ody and herself (calypso) bc they're the only voices she's ever known
It's totally in keeping with Greek stories to have, well, a Greek Chorus, people who aren't necessarily in the story but do comment and sometimes interact with the characters so I wasn't going to question where the ensemble vocals were coming from in various moments But I am both amused by the fact that Poseidon is so petty he brought back the Leitmotif AND ALSO the idea that there are some random guys following Odysseus around to provide back up vocals at a moments notice and do nothing else

I just wanted to thank you for bringing such amazing music and such a truly wonderful story to life. When EPIC is performed on Broadway (when, not if) I'll be one of the first to buy tickets! Ensemble vocals being a diegetic part of the gods' powerset to be utilized as they see fit in songs where they feature is honestly such a brilliant idea for characterizing the gods in this musical holy shit
I would love to read your lyric write ups, I never would have known there was a distinction between the different types of ensemble vocals if you hadn’t shown us. Like I would have just thought nothing of the presence of the ensemble, the same way you do with lots of things in theatre, fourth wall and all that. This is a really interesting angle though, and it makes me curious how many other very intentional details you’ve put in those lyrics sheets/screenplays that I’m missing. I was already painfully curious about the staging notes.

I'm pretty sure these are the spirits of the soldiers who died, but also, they're dead-- depending on how physically present these spirits are in the scene, if theyre literally there or if Ody is just remembering them, could this be interpreted as Ody gaining some sort of divine power that grants him background-ensemble-vocal rights as he kicks poseidons ass? edit: i also love the distinct lack of ensemble vocals in Charybdis!!

Random theory, while you said that gods don't have these back up singers with vocals I would like to think in the song 'My goodbye' they souls of dead greek hero's appear in this menacing swirl of cyan and gold souls around Athena as if protecting her. This comes from my silly thinking that odyeuss is not the first to be taught by Athena. The same applies for Ruthlessness but its the souls of the now passed on crew members watching from a place that cant be seen by mortal eyes. I really love how many details you put into this musical. Everyone of us noticed the background ensemble, but it's amazing how there's an entire story behind that!
A sad kind of way that I see this is through calypso, (Now the song could be this way because it’s a demo version but!) Almost all Calypsos ensemble is Oddysseus. Her ensemble is just Oddysseus singing in different ranges. And also in the song calypso claims she’s spent centuries on that island and Oddysseus is the only man she’s ever met (while on the island). Which is why the only voice she can think of for backup vocals is Oddysseus’s because he’s the only voice she’s ever heard. (Other then the gods) Which honestly just kinda sad 😭 But again the background vocals could just be Jorge because the song is still in the demo phase!
I can't blame Poseidon for being so pissed off. Odysseus may have been trying to be kind, but the Odyssey takes place in Mycenean Greece. Leaving your opponent alive and crippled was considered a huge insult, add on top that he boasted to Polyphemus about how clever he was. I don't think Poseidon would've cared if Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, but he left him alive, crippled, and mocked him on the way out. AND it becomes even clearer why Poseidon considered himself gracious up until that point, because Poseidon was on the side of the Achaeans in the Trojan war. Like imagine you're in a conflict and after it's over, someone you helped in it got in a fight with your kid because he was being a dick. Alright, your kids gets told off that's fair, but then they go too far and break his hand and then brag about it to their face like "HA I'M BARRY AND I BROKE YOUR HAND"? I'd be pissed off too, even if my kid sucked I would take the chance to be extra petty and throw whatever I could in their face too

A sad kind of way that I see this is through calypso,
(Now the song could be this way because it’s a demo version but!)
Almost all Calypsos ensemble is Oddysseus. Her ensemble is just Oddysseus singing in different ranges. And also in the song calypso claims she’s spent centuries on that island and Oddysseus is the only man she’s ever met (while on the island). Which is why the only voice she can think of for backup vocals is Oddysseus’s because he’s the only voice she’s ever heard. (Other then the gods)

I can't blame Poseidon for being so pissed off. Odysseus may have been trying to be kind, but the Odyssey takes place in Mycenean Greece. Leaving your opponent alive and crippled was considered a huge insult, add on top that he boasted to Polyphemus about how clever he was. I don't think Poseidon would've cared if Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, but he left him alive, crippled, and mocked him on the way out. AND it becomes even clearer why Poseidon considered himself gracious up until that point, because Poseidon was on the side of the Achaeans in the Trojan war. Like imagine you're in a conflict and after it's over, someone you helped in it got in a fight with your kid because he was being a dick. Alright, your kids gets told off that's fair, but then they go too far and break his hand and then brag about it to their face like "HA I'M BARRY AND I BROKE YOUR HAND"? I'd be pissed off too, even if my kid sucked
I would take the chance to be extra petty and throw whatever I could in their face too
