Stray Gods: The Role-Playing Musical is one of the more unique and underrated games released last year, even if it is mostly just a high budget visual novel. Though it’s not entirely original, the concept of a world where Greek gods exist as normal modern-day people leads to some intriguing scenarios, especially from some of the side plots. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that the base story is a murder mystery, which I always love. Of course, it’s the musical aspect that’s the real star of the show. Not only is this a rare video game with full musical numbers, but they are all entirely modular, responding to your choices from throughout the game and during the song itself. This is undeniably a feat of musical genius, so of course the soundtrack is by Austin Wintory. The OST offers a few possible configurations of each of the songs, but there are many alternate combinations available when playing the game itself.
Check the description for a link to the soundtrack.

I wanted to comment that I love how much this sounds like a musical number and then I read your comment and I know just why it sounded like it. I am starting to make my peace with visual novels, because I think I can easily get around them not having any gameplay by streaming them instead, especially the ones who don't have voice acting will be fun to voice myself! And going through the story with my friends will make it much more interesting to me. Do you wanna rec me a couple? ^^
Anyway, loved this song and I am kinda interested in it now.

Well, as a follower of my channel, my favorites probably won't be too surprising: the Zero Escape series (and its follow-up AI: The Somnium Files), the Danganronpa series (and its follow-up Master Detective Archives), the Ace Attorney series, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and Steins;Gate.
On the indie side (generally shorter and more philosophical): I recommend Citizen Sleeper, VA-11 HALL-A , Paradise Killer, A Space for the Unbound, and another game I have coming up in this list shortly. And this one isn't a bad choice either if you like musicals :)

@@Klagmar Thank you! I actually already played Ace Attorney (has enough gameplay to keep me motivated). I heard of some of the others and always wanted to try Danganronpa.

To be honest, I think the big problem this game had is that the music changes were too drastic. Choices didn't feel like they changed the song, but more that they replaced it. Maybe musical aficionados got something out of that, but I feel it might have been too drastic for a general public.

I do agree, most songs seem to have 1 choice that leads to completely different sections that can feel like new songs. It's a bit jarring, but real musicals do this too! I guess it loses some points for making the transitions less subtle but gains them back for having so much variety in my opinion :)
