This was the best surprise of the year for me! I went into I Was a Teenage Exocolonist expecting another solid sci-fi role-playing visual novel like Citizen Sleeper, but I was not prepared for how engrossing this one is. The premise is already intriguing - you play as a child who grew up on a spaceship of refugees from Earth, with the game starting when they are ten years old and first land on a foreign planet. You then live through each month until you reach 20, spending your time building up various stats and collecting cards (framed as “memories”) for a card minigame. It’s super interesting seeing such a sci-fi premise filtered through the eyes of a child and growing up alongside all the other colonist children - I especially liked how they had all multiple sets of sprites as they grew up and their appearances changed. The role-paying is the star of the show here, with the most branching paths I’ve seen in a game in a long time. There are so many things I completely missed on my first playthrough, and the game even encourages repeat playthroughs with you retaining some memories of past lives. To top it off, the soundtrack is full of long and relaxing pieces that do a great job sinking into the background as you read. It’s by various artists, but this main theme is by Rogue Legacy’s A Shell in the Pit. All in all, I had such a great time discovering the secrets of the planet Virtumna and witnessing the space drama of the colonists - if this niche appeals to you at all, I give it a strong recommendation! So if I'm understanding correctly, this game is Sci-Fi Disco Elysium over the span of multiple years of the protagonist's life? That sounds super interesting!
@@JoshRyuuKind of! It's much more focused on playing yourself instead of filling in the role of an existing character, and there's a simple card game instead of dice rolls, but they do share things in common for sure.
