Wow, I really needed this video. I’m a bassist and have been struggling with getting serial compression to give me the bass sound I want. Now I get it. Thanks!
Thank you, again, David. The concept of "taming the transients" on bass is not one I've been implementing. I may have missed this principle along the way of the thick brush of learning to mix. This is super helpful for me as I continue to work on my mix chops - 95% of which you have taught me through your courses.
Great video. My bass sound is always awful - unfocused, boomy and without much of a bottom. How was this bass recorded? Is it straight into the high z input on the interface, or with a DI, or with an amp?

Thanks for the kind words. Learning To Mix is going away in a few months so you may want to check out my mixing site

Great stuff! Again I love these shorter videos that get right to the point & then you can go try it out in your DAW.
Thanks! sometimes videos need to be longer to actually teach things but I try to make them shorter when possible.
Thanks for this great video, the second compressor do you use similar settings as the first compressor?
Not sure. this video is a few years old
Couple of things, first excellent video -- that's a great compression tip! Second, the bass sound is very nice, sure would like to know that setup!
Awesome, thank you!
thanks for this dave!
Thanks Matt!

Not sure how it was recorded.
Moltas I have the same problem!
High pass filters and sucking out a good amount of 500hz ish AFTER compression goes a long way :)
Just use a good instrument and gear - quality DI or preamp. Cheap stuff sounds cheap.
Would this technique apply to staccato, fingered Funk bass line also?
sure would!
I notice you're using the ssl native v6 channel strip what's your opinion on it versus uad ssl and waves ssl? Thank you.
I did a video on this and it will be on the channel next week. Watch for it!

Too much boom in the extended sustain from the compressor. Annoys the ears.
Thanks for watching!
