- The Mir-24M is one of the finest examples of Soviet optical engineering. Even today, it can hold its own on high resolution mirrorless cameras, with some classic rendering characteristics that trump many modern lenses.

I know what you mean about the Arsenal plant quality control issues. My Mir-24H has a small amount of field tilt on the left-hand side. I've adapted it on two different systems so I know its not the adapters. There are also some specks of metal amongst the optics and the aperture doesn't fully open. The blades still stop down about half a stop between f2 and f2.4 according to the camera's meter but they are still slightly visible when wide open. On the plus side, the focus ring is as smooth as a Takumar and the image quality is brilliant. I managed to get the lens for £61 including postage from a seller in the UK.
Sounds like an Arsenal lens alright! Haven't heard of them having weighted field tilt elsewhere but that doesn't surprise me. Still a great buy for the price though!
@@SovietLensReviews I didn't notice the field tilt at first. It was only when I took a closer look at my f/2 infinity focus images did I notice that the left side of the image was softer in some shots. I've since confirmed this by placing the focus assist box on the left-hand side of the frame. The far left-hand side hits infinity slightly before the rest of the frame. Have you read Jean Loup Princelle - The authentic guide to Russian and Soviet cameras?

The amount the blades open is a very easy fix only requiring you to take the bottom off and adjusting a metal piece with 2 screws.
On my copy the screws were loosened during shipping and the aperture would only open half. Fixed it in 5 minutes without having seen the inside of the lens before.
@@Ni5ei Thanks for the info. I fixed the aperture issue back in 2020. I did it the same way but went in through the front of the lens. For anyone interested you can find my post about the process on mflenses at the the bottom of the thread entitlesd "Adjust Infinity Focus - Mir-24N 35mm f2.0".

Later on, maybe... but arsenal produced some very well made lenses. To be exact, they produced the sharpest medium format pentacon six lenses ever produced. Meaning... that they were, at some point, better than carl zeiss lenses.
Agree completely that Arsenal's Pentacon-6/Kiev mount lenses were their best work, fantastic lenses. I recently reviewed a Mir-26V from them.
I have flektagon 35 mm and on colour department its better thn Mir

Hey so how does this pair up with the helios 44-2? Do you think they'd work as a set? In a bit of a dilemma between getting the mir-1 37 2.8 and this. The extra stop on this is quite tempting!
They would work well in a set, I find the helios to be better suited for creative 'looks' than standard photography/videography - the Mir 24 here can be used as a normal lens by comparison, without the telltale swirly bokeh. Definitely worth it over the Mir-1 IMO!

Thanks for watching! In Sydney there used to be a vintage lens market but I never encountered too many Soviet lenses there, so I'd recommend this one on eBay - ebay.us/ZvrmPD - looks like the best copy for the best price right now.
Strangely enough, I've never seen this particular lens on a local market (SE Europe) unlike older variant, 37mm f2,8 MIR lens, which pops out here and there...
Yeah, the 37mm f2.8 MIR is certainly a lot more common, at least online. This variant was quite expensive back in the day, and so was not produced as widely.

M in soviet lenses designates not just m42 mount but m42 mount with aperture preview (blinking aperture моргающая диафрагма) mechanism.

I have a mir 24 H from Arsenal Factory (Kiev or Uman' i don't know exactly, Arsenal stand for Kiev, But there were other Filiale in Uman')
That's No Walmart ;) of course yes, Zenit, Krasnogorsk is the Best. My copy is very gut Too. Try to Buy the sowjet lenses til 90. Kiev produced also Military optics, that s why Arsenal is good too.

Do you find Darktable comfortable to work with, towarisch?
Нет, comrade. Darktable is very powerful once you actually have the photo in there and are dragging the sliders, the effects/raw editing it has is just as good as any other software out there, but it's a massive pain to do all of the peripheral stuff. Exporting, importing, sorting, organizing... That's where it falls down.

Thanks! The only reason I would be cautious to recommend the Mir-24N (N, not M) is some of the quality control I've experienced in Arsenal lenses (the factory where most 24Ns were made) is spotty.
However, if you take good care of your lenses, and find a good copy of the 24N, I'd go for it solely for the tiny bit of extra light it lets in, at 2.0 vs 2.4.

@@avanguardian Build quality. Optically the one I had was perfect, but build-wise it had a very stiff focus ring that eventually failed. After I researched it, turned out it's a common problem with the 24Ns that came out of Arsenal. If you do get one, go as early as you can. Closer to fall of the union = worse in general.

I've gotta disagree though with some of the Walmart comparisons - I have Arsenal's 50mm 1.4 lens, I have peeked inside, and I can report that it is a very nicely made lens. I'm sure you meant that in conjunction with the MIR lenses in question, but I thought it might come off the wrong way.
Completely agree, I made this video when my experience with Arsenal lenses was a bit limited, they do make some pretty solid lenses. By and large though, KMZ is the GOAT of Soviet lens factories.
Any idea why the M can focus up to 0.3 meters while the N can focus up to 0.24 meters?
Just a different lens barrel design/construction that allows for it, nothing in particular different optically.
Hey! Great reveiw, only one remark. As a soviet born native Russian speaker, I think Mir stands for "peace", not "world". Soviets were obsessed with the word "peace" in their product naming (as part of propaganda).
Thank you for the clarification! The only reason I assumed it translated to "World" is because all of their other lenses were also named after celestial bodies - Jupiter, Helios, Orion, etc. so the 'world' made sense, although I do understand there was a lot of use of the word "Peace" in propaganda etc. back in the day.

@@grechka666 the author is 100% right. It's "world". The lens is wide, so the idea is that you can see the whole world trough it.
"As a soviet born native Russian speaker" I confirm that in case of photo lenses "Мир" means "World", as you can see it through the lens. Other Soviet lenses`s names are also pretty neutral, like "Helios", "Jupiter", "Vega", "Tair", etc. And comparing to Western propaganda of Cold War period, the Soviet one was more like a childish.
I would correct you. Mir-24 is the best Soviet WIDE ANGLE lens ever made. And there are not many good Soviet wide angles in general.
I still have the lens in Nikon mount (Kiev Arsenal production) as I liked its close focus ability and bokeh.
I have sold other lenses from this Arsenal series such as 100mm Kaleinar-5H, 20mm Mir-20H, and 50mm Helios-81H since I found better alternatives. I'm currently looking for another copy of Helios-81H, since I liked the IQ. My only problem with that was the focusing distance. Nevertheless, I prefer Volna-1 and Volna-9 macro as the Soviet nifty-fifty.
I also like the Helios-81H, it produces a good looking image, agreed on the focusing distance though.
I would say, that if you have not tried the Mir-24M, I personally found it a step above my copy of the 24N in terms of image quality (and certainly build quality) - unfortunately my 24N is in pieces, and when I owned the 24N I was shooting it on a different camera, so I can't compare them directly. I'm still yet to try the Volna's or any Soviet macros really, but quite interested in them.
@@SovietLensReviews Volna-1 is a regular 50 in Pentax K-mount. Very good if you get a not too trashed copy.
Of the other 50-s I would single out Helios-77-4 (not the usual 44-7).and Zenitar-M 50/1.7. Exept for the Zenitar, the other two are a bit more rare though.
The Mir can be transited as peace too)

Compared to other Soviet lenses (for small, medium, or large format film cameras). Essentially, the best amongst lenses that photographers and videographers can actually use.
