BBALLBREAKDOWN It doesn't matter what team anyone supports, if you can't appreciate the way this team plays, YOU DON'T KNOW the game of basketball. If I see the same mistake coach Popovich did last year in game 6 with Miami, I will be very disappointed though...
Well, I wouldn't go that far. Their style from 98-05 was...not offensively aesthetic the way it is now. It obviously worked and was suited to the predominant style of play at the time, but dump the ball to post and let the big man work isn't a "feast for the eyes." Especially when they were so good defensively, clogging up the paint with 7 footers.
Jules Winnfield Well that's your opinion. The coach used his assets in the most effective way possible, NO ONE can blame him for that. The Spurs were never short of offensive guns in all positions, and the coach really took advantage of every single weakness the opponent had, either on offense or defense.
This is why I love coach pop. He conceded game 4 to okc but as diaw played the rest of the game, he saw something in diaw that he could exploit for the following game and spurs made the necessary adjustments. Now its up to brooks and his coaching staff to counter the adjustments made by coach pop and the spurs.
It was a smart adjustment starting with Bonner in the first quarter, he didn't make a impact on the stat sheet but he forced Ibaka out of the paint and Ibaka only had like 1 rebound in the first half if I remember correctly.
the last play is just crazy, was totally thinking mills going to get back the ball after green's screen and go for a baseline drive. and then just to find out how smart Spurs' sets are... wow... that green's cut was just clever.
This is why coach Pop is so great. He adjusts! Also, no mention of how when Danny Green hits more than 3 3's the Spurs are 24-1 or something ridiculous like that?
You REALLY need to do a breakdown of San Antonios first quarter in game 3... the ball and player movement was just beautiful and none of the videos on TH-cam do it justice.
God the Spurs are a freaking Machine!! Look at that beautiful movement. They really play great team basketball. Such High IQ's from everyone. It's nice to have a back up big in diaw who can also knock down 3's
Wow thanks for the breakdown coach. The adjustments coach pop made were incredible. I didn't give him enough credit for this game and I'm a diehard spurs team. It just looked like they played harder but after seeing this I can see that there was way more involved in the win tonight.
The last play was insanely effective and the execution was perfect! I hope they'll run it more often in game 6, cause the possibilities in this play is just what Spurs are good at, the extra pass! I was out of my chair when I saw it in the game last night.
moral of the story: if you're having hardships, don't work harder on the spot (game 4, 4th quarter). put it off, and plan to work harder tomorrow (game 5). coach pop is such a genius :D
Coach. Can you do some breakdowns on the teams in fiba world cup after the finals? Specially the team gilas pilipinas. But then again coach thankyou for the videos im learning alot everytime i watch your videos. :)
I thought Diaw was much taller than he is. He's only 6'8. To score over Ibaka like it's nothing at 6'8 is pretty remarkable. I was curious to see how the Spurs would adjust in game 5 and from this breakdown I see that Diaw was a big key. I thought starting Bonner set a different tone and I thought he did a good job defending Ibaka. There's something about Matt Bonner I really like. Anyways, the Spurs coaching staff is amazing. The way they have made adjustments from game to game show why they are likely on their way to another championship. And I have to give credit to Westbrook. He has been moving the ball well and attacking. For the past two games he has looked like a real point guard.
IMO, as long as they have transcendent players like Durant and Westbrook, they can steal one on the road. Durant is capable of going off and willing his team, but Pop is bottling his efforts greatly.
at this point, i'm honestly withholding judgment. i'm hoping the spurs win this series, and hoping okc finds a good coach in the offseason because i dislike brooks' coaching, but okc is still scary good when kd, russ, and ibaka get it going, even without a decent gameplan. spurs still IMO have the slight edge b/c of pop.
Doesn't anybody else also love international players in the NBA too? They tend to have so much more flair than the bog standard american "hyper-athletes". Diaw, TP, Nash, Ginobli, Dirk, Gasols, Dragic, Gortat, Rubio, Pek are just a few names that have popped into my head and they all have unique quirky elements to their game that make them so enjoyable to watch.
Spurs play great team basketball! Unlike Miami who's game plan probably looks like this: Play 1 - Lebron Post up. Play 2 - Wade drive to basket. Play 3 - Lebron Jump shot. Play 4 - Wade Post up. Play 5 - Choose from any above.
pop is obviously better than spo, but spo is at worst a top 10 coach in the league, and most likely a top 5 coach. he does a lot of great things for the team, and does adjust well; the one knock i have is that he doesn't run more fluid misdirection stuff in the half-court, and tends to run that 5-out set a bit too much, which relies on bron and wade's talents.
Big Butt Diaw is just a beast. He can easily average 13 pts 8 rbds and 5 assists per game. He's non athletic but man he just plays old school basketball with a pretty good 3 pt shot.
I still remember the time spurs were doing this to warriors in game 1 of 2017, but just with Kawhi having the more scoring ability and they were up 23, until Kawhi went down
Here is a question, I know the Spurs were the best when Ginobili and Duncan were at their prime, but in term of reliance on plays, are the Spurs better now at ball movement?(compared to 2003,2005,2007)
"Diaw gets an assist when his pass to Manu turns into a one-dribble drive..." Why does he get an assist for that ? Are you sure he got one ? Cause that's ridiculous if it's true
Well, i thought an assist was passing to someone who immediately scored. Diaw didn't really "assist" in Manus Layup did he ? ahwell, doesn't matter I was just wondering
Stefan Harnesk It doesn't have to be immediate. An assist is a pass that leads to a score. It could be no dribble, or 1 dribble or even 2. As long as the person who receives the pass has made his mind to go to the basket to score.
Stefan Harnesk Not at all. The entry pass didn't lead him to the basket. And I think an assist has an unofficial 3 second rule. If you make a move within 3 seconds of a pass. It counts as an assist. Not more than that.
There's any more doubt that Pop is the greatest coach of alltimes? He can scheme a defense similar to Thibodeau's, and at the same time he can work the same magic in the offense. Elite on both sides. And the more impressive: Everything with basically the same roster. His skills as a coach are something pretty remarkable. He worked with two towers, defense specialists, atheletic players, old players, stationary PGs, mobile PGs, heavy isolate basketball using Duncan, ball movement using the own Duncan, etc... This damn old mummy knows everything! And people even dare to say that the undimensional Phil Jackson (using a scheme he did not create, and taking credits of it) is a better coach than him? Blasphemy!
If I were playing nba2k and exploited like this by the Spurs, I would experiment with putting KD on Diaw, Ibaka on Duncan, Thabo on Kawahi, Westbrook on Green and Reggie Jackson on Parker. Whatever drive and kick-out play can be managed, and also on offense, KD and Russ can dominate the Diaw and Green matchup in transition all day.
Thats the best adjustment brooks can make. Then it will be up to duncan to: 1) go to the open spot for the drop off pass 2) hit the mid range shot 3) be effective in post up isos against ibaka. In nba 2k, there is no "help the helper," so in real life, durant and westbrook will have to defend against the drop off pass to duncan via "help the helper" when ibaka goes for the block. It will be up to the spurs to execute the counter by making crisp passess to to the open man, and to catch and shoot in rhythm with a man trying to run him off the three
That's the thing about adjustments and counter adjustments. Ibaka dominated as a shot blocker, Coach Pop countered w the Diaw/Bonner stretch 4, now OKC has to come w their own counters-- that is w/o getting in KD/Westbrook hero ball.
The Spurs are just a feast for the eyes, for the past 15 years!
YES! Don't let it end

tmilatos Exactly right. It wasn't pretty back then, but it was the correct strategy.
Diaw is such a good player. he can play post move, shoot 3s and pass the ball.
That last play shows the greatness of Coach Pop.. the beautiful sets they run are poetry in motion and never fail to amaze..
This is why I love coach pop. He conceded game 4 to okc but as diaw played the rest of the game, he saw something in diaw that he could exploit for the following game and spurs made the necessary adjustments. Except that Brooks and his coaching staff are awful at making adjustments to their gameplan..
Riley Aitken well lets fkin hope so :)
Riley Aitken How would you know if they're awful or not when they never make any?
It was a smart adjustment starting with Bonner in the first quarter, he didn't make a impact on the stat sheet but he forced Ibaka out of the paint and Ibaka only had like 1 rebound in the first half if I remember correctly.
'coach' brooks see KD and Westbrook going 1 on 5
Boris Diaw is a point guard in a walrus' body
Its sad how much truth this comment has lol
LOL
He used to play point guard to the Suns and back up point guard to Tony Parker in the French team.
so disrespectful
"he dem big ol' san antonio man" -charles barkley
That hook pass has to be one of the sexiest moves in the NBA
Pop is one of the rare coaches who always inspires his entire team to work hard for 4 quarters.
The Spurs are that rare team, and organization.
I think someone like Scott Brooks does that as well. The primary difference is that Pop also coaches his ass off during those 4 quarters
That last play design is just gorgeous!!
that elevator was amazing. I thought it was an elevator for Mills but it turns out to be a sideline elevator against an inferior defender in Lamb
the last play is just crazy, was totally thinking mills going to get back the ball after green's screen and go for a baseline drive.
and then just to find out how smart Spurs' sets are... wow... that green's cut was just clever.

They definitely played with more energy tonight, for sure. But there are strategic adjustments as well. THX!
Some great coaching and breakdowns in detail here Nick, especially on my Spurs!
God the last play is sooo beautiful, it makes me cry...
this is wayyyy better than that 1 minute nba hightlights. ty coach.
Awesome video Coach Nick, you're a straight legend.
Coach, why do this video when you said all of this was going to happen after the spurs lost. Great job! Keep the videos coming!
This is pure artwork right here.
Wow that last play was absolutely beautiful
Coaches Nick and Pop think alike! What a compliment for Greg Popovich. :-)
Definitely the other way around!!
THX so much
that elevator play was nice. .. btw coach bleacher report included one of your tweets about their Game 5 article . .keep the vids coming
good review coach! really really enjoy them and learn a lot from them
Absolutely love that last play "closing the elevator doors" hahah shit was crazy
spurs bball gives me goosebumps, so brilliant, so simple
I love the Elevator plays!
Wow the last one is so sophisticated and beautiful
Damn, That last elevator play at the end !! I lost track of how many moves were before the actual play was done !!
Especially the last play of this video... OMG, this is basketball.
Great job, Coach Nick. I didn't know Ibaka is a below average post defender, because he is notorious in swatting shots every now and then.
Awesome breakdown. The spurs are so good.
The last play was insanely effective and the execution was perfect! I hope they'll run it more often in game 6, cause the possibilities in this play is just what Spurs are good at, the extra pass! I was out of my chair when I saw it in the game last night.
amazing last play!
Diaw is Love Diaw is Life
That last play. OOOOWEEEEEEE
The last time i saw this kind of beautiful ball movement was 1986 Boston Celtics.
Coach, did you watch the inside trax for this game? Pop said some interesting stuff
Beautiful basketball on Spur
when i saw that side elevator play out of a zipper cut at the start of the 4th live i actually jizzed a little. rewound it like 5 times.
That elevator play was beautiful!
Your the best!
That last elevator play was the best.
Diaw for MVP!
what a change by the Spurs.. I think this is going game 7
Hi Coach Nick!
Hi!
THANKS! I've got a good one coming up this afternoon. Stay Tuned!
That last elevator play was beautiful to watch.
moral of the story: if you're having hardships, don't work harder on the spot (game 4, 4th quarter). put it off, and plan to work harder tomorrow (game 5).
coach pop is such a genius :D
Elevator PLAY FTW.
Charles Barkley called it. The adjustments for game 5 was to kick out to guys around the perimeter
hey coach is there any stats showing ibaka being a below-average-post defender?
Yes - Synergy has him rated in the 40th percentile for post defense.
Your twitter handle still says @bballsource in your vids coach.
Coach. Can you do some breakdowns on the teams in fiba world cup after the finals? Specially the team gilas pilipinas. But then again coach thankyou for the videos im learning alot everytime i watch your videos. :)
I'll see what I can do. It's been crazy busy over here with the NBA
SPURS CHAMPS 2014!
That elevator is more fun to watch then it is to ride the twilight zone tower of terror in disneyland

@2:51 that looked like hakeem olajuwon
thAT last play is so SPURS!!!!!!!1 go spurs go
Coach do the Thunder have a chance at the series? It seems like no team can win away from home.
Can't count out Thunder just yet.
Ha! Grandiose. I see what you did there.

Coach Nick you said this would happen after looking at the footage. Is there any way that the Thunder can overcome the Spurs if they do this again?
Nope, not a chance
i love the spurs
Spurs play great team basketball! Unlike Miami who's game plan probably looks like this:
Play 1 - Lebron Post up.
Play 2 - Wade drive to basket.
Play 3 - Lebron Jump shot.
Play 4 - Wade Post up.
Play 5 - Choose from any above.
i don't like miami as well but that's just not true. miami offence is very nice, although it looks better because it's lebron and wade, but still.
pop is obviously better than spo, but spo is at worst a top 10 coach in the league, and most likely a top 5 coach. he does a lot of great things for the team, and does adjust well; the one knock i have is that he doesn't run more fluid misdirection stuff in the half-court, and tends to run that 5-out set a bit too much, which relies on bron and wade's talents.
Heat is a 3 point shooting team their offense is simply a drive and kick out for 3 point shooters the only Heat player that have a post game is Wade .
jimmy Smith lebron is good in post too. but i agree. the most TALENTED player (as go-to moves and overall skill, not power) is wade.
jimmy Smith wade doesnt really have post moves. He is actually pretty average posting up.
2:16 the definition of unselfish play.
Diaw is actually very skilled and talented..I think sometimes he just lacks confidence to be aggressive.
damn that elevator was beautiful
Damn, the Spurs just play damn good basketball ...
Love Diaw since he was in the Suns.
Basically french draymond without the fouls and with post up ability
I think you mean Draymond is the American Diaw.
+Adrian Ramirez W
No defense tho
Big Butt Diaw is just a beast. He can easily average 13 pts 8 rbds and 5 assists per game. He's non athletic but man he just plays old school basketball with a pretty good 3 pt shot.
the last play man...
MAN....
BBALLBREAKDOWN teamwork at its best
Miss Diaw with the Spurs. Without Kawhi and Parker, it's on Manu and Simions.
I still remember the time spurs were doing this to warriors in game 1 of 2017, but just with Kawhi having the more scoring ability and they were up 23, until Kawhi went down
did spurs made a mistake on trading diaw?
Here is a question, I know the Spurs were the best when Ginobili and Duncan were at their prime, but in term of reliance on plays, are the Spurs better now at ball movement?(compared to 2003,2005,2007)
Back then they had great defenders and won with defense rather than rely on offense. Now the team is much better offensively and less defensively.
This is the best ball movement the Spurs have ever gotten at any era
Go back to the old music on breakdowns coach
BBALLBREAKDOWN without the dramatic music just wasn't the same
This ain't 2012 baby....
Boris Diaw is the finals MVP.
Hey
What up?
Where did all the "Spurs can't beat Thunder" people go? So quick to judge.
That elevator play... wow.
GO SPURS!
Hello!
HI
"Diaw gets an assist when his pass to Manu turns into a one-dribble drive..."
Why does he get an assist for that ? Are you sure he got one ?
Cause that's ridiculous if it's true
Manu got the pass, pump faked, took one dribble and scored. All under 2 seconds. Why shouldn't Diaw get an assist for that.
Ok
Is it the same on a postentry ? Like when a postplayer catches the ball, backs down and scores, and it takes 5 secs ?
Stefan Harnesk Not at all. The entry pass didn't lead him to the basket. And I think an assist has an unofficial 3 second rule. If you make a move within 3 seconds of a pass. It counts as an assist. Not more than that.
Diaw and Big Baby Davis are the most skilled chubby players in the league
There's any more doubt that Pop is the greatest coach of alltimes? He can scheme a defense similar to Thibodeau's, and at the same time he can work the same magic in the offense. Elite on both sides. They already tried KD on Diaw in game 1 and 2 if I remember correctly, and KD's lack of strength became a factor
***** funny how diaw seems kinda fat and clunky when in reality he's kinda strong and even gracious
EqualsDeath Yeah. When he has the ball, its always a high IQ play.
That's the thing about adjustments and counter adjustments. Ibaka dominated as a shot blocker, Coach Pop countered w the Diaw/Bonner stretch 4, now OKC has to come w their own counters-- that is w/o getting in KD/Westbrook hero ball.
why cant the Knicks run plays like the Spurs?
woooooo fk durant hahahaha
Diaw is awesome but how did he get so fat? I can't believe that he still manages to play so damn well with all that extra-weight.
Elevator's play: Coaches' Porn
The sole reason they won was because they started Matt Bonner.
Scalabrine has been resurrected.
diaw got traded lol
thad elevator play was coaches porn !!!!!!
Hey
YO
stop it.
