I only buy their pinned gas block barrels. It may not happen to the average person very often. But as a gun dealer fixing peoples rifles I have seen many loose gas blocks causing problems. Also helps with alignment as the pin drive-through. You don't even need to use the screws after it's pinned. It's also a military requirement on all barrels. And it makes my OCD feel better.

All my BA barrels are the tightest shooters I have. All are right at 1-1.5MOA with most all ammo. The exception is my 20” DMR 6.5 Grendel. It is one ragged hole using the 130gr Berber OTM Hybrid. I had the same extractor issue you did and fixed it using your other video. BA bolt too. Thanks!
After living in Cali for so long, those 8" and 10" barrels look so small.... thanks for another great one.

Clint Hanson is easy enough to talk to. I had gas issues with my .308 barrel from him, gave them a call and Mr. Hanson himself answers the phone. I got the correct gas port diameter from him, checked the diameter with a drill bit and found a nasty burr in the hole. I drilled that out and fixed my issues.
Clint prides himself on making barrels that are not overgassed, but i could see how that could cause problems with subsonics. Maybe give him a call, he would like to talk to someone promoting his products.
Can't wait to see what you do with this one. I am not pleased with my 8.5; but it has done the job.
Putting a big ass scope on a short range weapon and then judging it based on accuracy isn't really fair, if we're being honest. It's fun and it's interesting, but it's also a little stupid. I try to remind myself of that any time I am disappointed in these short barrels. I think this BA barrel is going to do just fine once I narrow in on some loads and get her broken in. This video helped me. The 147g ammo that I have been using is disappointing, but 110g, and 208g, are grouping 1 1/4" in my 10.5" barrel. Thanks.
I just got a .224 Valkyrie Ballistics Advantage premium 20" barrel and it shoots sub MOA without really even trying. Great barrels. As accurate as my Noveske Recon 16
' 5.56.
I love my 300 Blackout. I'm shooting Hornaday 110gr, GMX with W296 at 19.5 gr. Nice groups! going to try to hunt with it this year. I have a 16" Dark Storm Industries barrel.

I know, dude. There are a lot of people that want that data. I was just really tired of duplicating everything for two guns. It got old and it was causing me to make less 300 blackout videos. Hopefully this barrel will be a nice middle ground. The good news is that we've got 60+ videos in my 300 blackout playlist that show the differences in velocity from 8.5 & 16, so we can use that to extrapolate a bit. I hope you'll stick around anyway!
+1, though I really would prefer a load that works well in the AR pistols and the carbines. I'd be willing to give up a little performance to be sure that if I grabbed a lot of ammo for a competition or something out of the bunch I've got loaded that it will be safe and accurate in whatever gun I happened to grab.
I think JRB is well on its way to becoming a barrel review channel haha! You should put a video together swapping any of your barrels around, personally I've never done it but I'd like to see how you do it. Great stuff man
I would review $10,000 worth of barrels every month if I could! It's fascinating...and it's more important to accuracy than any of this reloading nonsense we do around here.
Johnny's Reloading Bench that would be awesome, you have my vote for wanting to see barrel reviews! Have you tried any barrels with 5R or different style rifling? Shillen has some ratchet rifling that's really interesting and I've seen it shoot ridiculously good

I've had really good results with lil gun powder & 125 sst. 19.5 grains in once fired LC brass that i form myself. 600 rds through 16in barrel.
I know what you mean about the barrel classes man. I got the 8.3ba Hanson Premium and I felt like it took a weeks worth of research to figure out what exactly I was buying. Great barrels though.
I would go with a lower powered buffer spring. Nemo Arms or Brownells or right to bear. It will fix the cycling issue and you will have less bolts slam

Still plan on continuing to test the Rainier wedge bullets? My 10.5" upper seems to run them pretty well at 980-1060fps with 9.7gr of A1680. But still prone to the powder position issue...

I feel that you have something to work with now. anyway, The next time you are in the vicinity of you friendly Harbor freight get your self the big High-speed Titanium Nitride drill index, The one that comes with numbers, fractions, and letters. When I have an orifice that I need to measure I use the shank end of the tightest fitting drill bit in the hole. Then measure the size of the shank with your calliper in thousandths.

I have the exact same barrel with same results. I think with the twist rate, and length it only likes the heavy bullets.
Not sure if you really care or not but with factory match ammo BA guarantees their barrels (including this 1, which I also have) to 1 MOA or better. Try kicking some factory match through it just for the hell of it.
Now just out of curiosity since I just found (& subbed) your channel, do you run any type of a break in process on your barrels? If so, what is it? I just like hearing other's thoughts on it since some of us do, some don't, & some only for competition or long range guns.

I've been following your videos for a little while now. What I'm not understanding is why you use so many different types of powder? And how did you come to use that particular charge with each powder type? Personally the way I try different loads is to pick the projectile, then ladder test it in 0.5gr increments from the minimum to maximum load data. Now I'm not saying the same could be true for 300BLK, but for my 223 Wylde, a 0.5gr increase made 77gr Sierra MatchKings go from a 1.25" group to a 0.5" group out of my rifle for an example. I know using one single powder for each type of projectile is time-consuming but if you're serious about getting the best load for each projectile that's what I'd be doing.
I was wondering the same thing. It seems to me it would cause inconsistencies using different powders for each projectile tested.
Another great video. Though not perfect I think it shows potential for some of the loads you tested. Correct me if I am wrong but some of your loads have room to play with OAL. Plus if the barrel hates 296 that might be a reason for a couple of the less interesting loads. For reference I have checked gas ports with drill bits before. Not really a pin gauge but easier than calipers. I need to see how my Noveske barrel compares. I just got a scope for it that I could actually try for groups with.
Yup, we've got room to play around with OAL on just about everything. I thought about trying drill bits for a more precise measurement but the difference was so visually obvious that I didn't sweat it too much. If my numbers were off a bit the point remains...freaking huge difference! What length is your Noveske?

Also, have you given up on Accurate 1680 for subs? Still works best for me.
Barrel contour has a lot to do with barrel harmonics, which can severely affect accuracy, depending on the length of the barrel. I know it makes a huge difference in longer barrels.
I'm not trying to diminish the importance of contour...I'm just saying to shorten and simplify the frickin name.
I hear you. just to ease your mind, I dont think barrel harmonics has alot of influence on shorter barrels like a 10 inch. That is a long name though lol, you would think they would shorten it to save on ink for paperwork. I love the work you do, you are very thorough with your explanation of loading and your testing and I enjoy the way you make your videos like your shooting and loading with your views sitting right next to you.

You are a mad scientist after my own heart, sir!! 16" 6.5 Grendel is my favorite barrel length. Can you give some details as to what barrel manufacturer your 16" will be? I've had great luck with AA and Odin Works.
I've yet to make a 300 blackout do to damn needy toddlers, and time constraints. I would be very very interested in buying your 300 BO barrel for a "Johnns reloading bench" edition 300 BO for my wife to black bear hunt with. I don't run a suppressor, so carbine length is fine, and you have already done the load work-ups!
The 16" is an older Satern. It should arrive today, so we'll see! I'll keep you in mind when I decide what to do with the 16" bo!
Johnny's Reloading Bench the older Saturn's are usually much better, as they are a SAAMI spec chamber with the compound throat which generally will give you more accuracy with a much broader array of bullets! Looking forward to the tests!
Well...that's where things get complicated. This one was sent back to Satern and rechambered to Grendel II.
Johnny's Reloading Bench Well give it a whirl anyways, might shoot fine regardless. If not AA has fluted 16" and 18" Grendel barrels right now for less than $200 if you are disappointed with the 16" Saturn.
Johnny what was your preferred method for breaking in your BA Hanson 300 black out barrel. Need to use super or subs? Does it matter?
I just spend two weeks of my life watching all your videos on 300 blk. I just build a 8.3” super Hanson premier pro premium ultra. Anywho my Chrony comes in Thursday and will be testing it out. I wish you went from the ranier straight to a 8” Hanson. Wondering if the CMMG being cheap = out to anything. Regardless your videos are awesome. One question. All data I find wants the OAL to around 2.260 for this big honkin supers I wonder why your length is shorter. You would know more than I I’m still new at this. Thanks for the vids man!
have you heard anything good or bad about the 300 blkout rosco bloodline barrels?
If you shot a few groups with the ammo the barrel liked the best would be interesting for sure
Hey curious, what would you think about something like a 260 or 270 blackout ? Little larger than the 5.56 but little smaller than the 300. I'm really into getting a 300 blackout soon. Nothing for precision. Just a defense weapon. Will probably get a 9mm upper for it to to practice with.

If you want a tac driver go on jse surplus buy a mega arms 10.5" before they sell out. Best 300 blackout barrel I own.
Have u ever noticed any bolt gun or target gun have straight barrels. If u look at most ar15/ar10 barrels they have 90 degree angles. Less angle means the barrels can flex more during the shot which gives u better accuracy. Think about a trench in ww2 Germans built 90 degree angels to stop bombs from sending force all the way down the trench to minimize death. It's not much of a diffrence but it should help. Personally I think the vertical stringing of shots is from velocity diffrences n the wild ones could be wind, trigger squeeze n all that good stuff. Try some factory ammo as well
Kind of off topic but been wanting to ask for awhile... what mags do you run? Look like pmags. What generation? Did you modify the ribs? Seems like you typically only load 5 rounds at a time so maybe it's not an issue but have you run into any mag issues when loaded full?
Stock M2s and heavy subs haven't worked for me. They cross and bind or slide forward in the mag. I tried modifying the ribs on an M2 without much better luck. Lancers seem to work better and I just ordered some of the M3 Blackout specific mags hoping they work. Curious if you've seen these issues. Maybe a video idea? Run various types of mags?
bdubs1010 Looks like M3 pmags. I've never had an issue running subs in mine
M3 Pmags. I have never had issues, but like you say...I usually load them 5 rounds at a time. Some bullets don't stack quite as nice as I'd like but they work fine for me so far. I am also going to pick up some of the Blackout Pmags to try out.
I know you haven't done a 300blk video in a while...I bought this bbl recently and it LOVES 110 Tac-tx with 20gn H110. I agree it HATES lil gun.
I know it's a pain, but I think you could benefit from the factory instructed break in process. Thank you for your videos. They are pretty awesome and save me a lot of time in regards to load development . BA are my favorite barrels to suppress.
I've used White Oak Armament's recommended break-in procedure for my last few, so I just stuck with that this time. After my initial ~20 shots I cleaned the bore really well with Shooters Choice and a brush, then called it done. I plan to pick up some fresh JB and lightly hit the throats on my WOA and this BA a little so make sure they're okay. I try to stay out of the barrel break in arguments. Thanks for watching!

Yeah they did name the barrel after the guy who came up with the Contour I saw the review video when the barrels first came out and it talked about how they shave off weight while adding extra accuracy. Aero precision ohms ballistic advantage and that is the type of barrels I plan to use with my next to builds.
I'm just saying...the Ballistic Advantage Osama Slayer would be more memorable than what they're using now.
Johnny's Reloading Bench I get your point. I just want to say I really like your Channel and I found it how about two weeks ago and basically have watched pretty much almost every one of your videos. You and several other TH-camrs have really gotten me interested and reloading. I think I am going to start out with one of the kits from Lee Precision and likely the one that you did the video series on and go from there. The Hanson barrels tend to have small gas ports
Try measuring the gas ports with - gauge pins
Do you make or buy your targets? If you buy them, where from?
I buy standard poster board from wal-mart. Then I draw out an appropriate sized and use 1" sticker dots you can get at any gun shop.

your suppressor is affecting the barrel harmonics. You shots without it are 3/4 MOA
I'll test that soon. It's certainly possible. The non-suppressed shots were at 50 yards, though.
Thanks for the clarification. I've been wondering that for a while. It does underline how much the cliche "my results with my scope in my gun =/=yours...." If we completely duplacated your process and everything with a different can, we could all get different results.
It isn’t always this way I’m sure but every rifle I shoot suppressed has tighter groups than the same rifle un suppressed. Ask a prs shooter and they will tell you the same. In general suppressors improve and make the harmonics more uniform. I mean you can even do a search here on TH-cam and find the same info I’m telling you from my experiences.

I've got 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, 300 AAC BLK, 5.56 and .223 Wylde.
Im not a pistol fan, for range or home defense, and once thought the 300 would be a decent hog gun, but, found inefficient. The Grendels take care of that business.
Ammo expense Imo, is reason enough for me to wish I had never heard of 300 BLK, and I have two uppers, Hardened Arms. They make good components.
For plinking, range, and even hunting, the 7.62x39 in soft point is deadly, but range limited. WPA now makes 6.5 Grendel cheap to shoot.
I haven't reloaded in decades, but have a friend, swat trained, that was diehard 300 BLK, but gave up reloading 223/5.56 brass as a pain. Lol, bring on the commie steel.
So, ammo cost is a significant negative for me personally.
Btw, building my first two AR-10 platforms, one def. to be a .308, for cheap ammo plus heavy lifting work, and the second, under consideration for 6.5 Creedmore. Ammo is expensive, but for hunting, a buck plus for a cartridge has been the norm since the 80's.

Dear Johnny's Reloading Bench. First, I love your videos. ALL of them. I love your humble way your make your way through your reloading adventures. I am sorry we are not able to run down and share a pizza and a cold beverage and solve the worlds reloading problems together! That would be glorious, gotta say. Second, Regarding your video at 27:30 where you are looking at gas port diameter size. For what it's worth there is a great company called Tormach that makes a pin gauge set here: tormach.com/0061-0250in-pin-gauge-set-190pcs-33246.html that allows one to exactly find out what size hole the gas port on a rifle actually IS. from .061" up thru .250" for around $80 bucks I think. A useful tool set to lay it out exactly what the port size actually IS. You have really inspired me in a lot of ways about a lot of reloading for a lot of calibers and all your work has been very appreciated. Happy New Year sir!
Thanks for the heads up on Tormach!! The gas port size and gas key size is important factor in getting a gun to run correctly. Personally with my OCD I always want to blueprint everything.
1,7twist is Made yust for 5,5 and 7,5 max Barel..... For 10,5 and longer is better 1,8 twist👍
Why "have the gas port drilled out"? That's a remarkably easy job to do yourself. Basically hold the drill at the correct angle, use a drill stop or chuck the bit way in. Clean with a brush afterward to check for burrs. Shoot a few FMJ clean again. You're done.
That's exactly what I would do. I just didn't want to hear people complain that I was going to screw up my gun.
But if they did, you would have the pleasure of knowing who the idiots were. ;) BTW, if you go to industrial tool supplies they will have letter and number drill bits in that size range for around 80 cents each. I have a few that I use for tuning saiga shotguns. It's really liberating the first time you actually "cut on a perfectly good gun". Now I am almost in a hurry to void warranties so I can just get it over with and make the thing my own. I'ma shoot reloads anyway.

The science behind the profile of barrel helps mitigate whip. Look into it. Kind of a good way to waste some time and find some slow motion footage of barrel whip while people shoot stuff.

Sub MOA guarantee they say
300AAC is a MISTAKE -- too big a bullet, too slow a velocity. I think of the 300 AAC as a more compact 7.62x39 that is 200 fps slower. They should have kept the 223 length and case, but neck it to 6.5mm. That
will be a much better "Efficient Intermediate" cartridge. The standard supersonic load could have been a 107 grain HPBT at 2,500 fps and a .40~.44 BC (G1) on 21~22gr of powder. The subsonic suppressed load could have been the 150 gr HPBT with ~.71 BC (G1) at 1000 fps with ~5 gr of powder.
