    I know a lot of people consider Demon Days to be Gorillaz' peak but for me it's easily Plastic Beach. All the features on this album are insane: Snoop Dogg, Mos Def, Little Dragon, Lou Reed, etc. "Empire Ants" is one of my favorite songs of all time

    • @samonte

      Agreed. It might just be which album came out when you were most impressionable. I was 18 when this came out and is the gold standard for albums to me.

      I really don't see what's so special about it. 'But, maybe that's because I've been listening to electronic music since the mid 90s and have been listening to allot more "detailed" tracks with lots of elements in them. Gorillaz' music still sounds like it was made in the late 90s, but maybe that's what they are going for, with analogue synth sound

    14:13 and that ladies and gents is when Dad first heard Little Dragon... ahhhh I wish I could go back and hear her angelic vocals match a synth for the first time!! 'Ritual Union' so damn good, and their 'New Me, Same Us' 2020 album is a BANGER project

    • @nickhoxsie4076
      @nickhoxsie4076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Blinking pigs, come home, fortune, ritual union, crystalfim, twice, no love, constant surprises, place to belong, scribble paper, klapp klapp, and a lot of the new album are songs that stood out to me at a look through.

    This album is so great, Empire Ants is def my #1 gorillaz song. Great video!

  • @masonstillmatic
    @masonstillmatic ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Albarn’s opus and a conceptual masterwork. The subject matter, the crafting of the world, the production. Superfast into Empire is a stroke of absolute genius. The hopelessness of the subject matter, while you’re caressed by the beauty of the sound invokes the exact feeling it’s aiming to produce via the words and turns it into a feeling. Unapologetically pulls you into acknowledging the reality of the world.
    Album is incredibly cinematic too, so easy to picture the Gorillaz washing up on plastic beach, defeated and withdrawn. Making use of the technology of the island to create songs to express those feelings. Rhinestone, Superfast, Empire, Melancholy Hill, Nature, Sweepstakes. The conceptual through-line of this album is almost unparalleled.

    There are so many great tracks on this album that it is hard for me to choose a favorite, but I always come back to Cloud of Unknowing for some reason. The mood of the song hits me in just the right way. It feels especially ethereal and mysterious after Bobby's passing, much in the same way that Black Star does to me.

    • @skyleruballe2265

    I love the whole album, but Melancholy Hill has a special place in my heart. When I was in elementary school, I had to sleep out in our living room for months. I liked to sleep with the TV on, but living in Florida you'd get a ton of ads for retirement facilities and luxury resort hotels, especially at night when the adults were awake and kids asleep. For so many of those nights, there was a commercial for beach resort that used Melancholy Hill as a backing track.
    Dozing off to that song matched with the visuals of a serine beach with the feeling that it's a weekend night sparks some neuron patterns in my brain that just makes me feel so cozy. It's probably my favorite song of all time.

    The top 3 favorite albums i own are queens of the stone age: songs for the deaf, hidria spacefolk: symbiosis and this one, plastic beach.
    Definitely give hidria spacefolk: symbiosis a listen though, its one of life's most underrated masterpieces. The percussion, the synths... its nuts

    I remember reading that Bobby went so hard on his part in Stylo that he basically passed out and when he came to the first thing he saw was Damon offering him a banana.
    RIP Bobby Womack

      Damon tells him afterwards: you’re my hero man
      Bobby: then dont kill your hero!

      Yeah I heard that story too. They didn’t know Womack was diabetic.
