    DVDs do not look great on a 75" TV. Low res and almost motion blurred in action. But I will buy them if, as you said, they're only reasonable option (price, availability). I'm also not gonna throw out my old collection from the early 2000s. Especially TV shows continued to release on DVD beyond the bluray years.

    A big point people forget aout dvd technology these days is that most modern players,consoles have great upscalers that inproves dvd quality tremendously. This alone has helpes dvd stand the test of time. Especially any dvd being outputted through an HDMI

    I'm still a DVD enthusiast for several reasons. Because of nostalgia and price. I'm not obsessed with picture quality. Just last week I got 11 dvds for $19 at a pawn shop. I just like owning movies for cheap and that's the case with most people. Collectors only want 4k but the general public is fine with dvd and the general public will always be the majority.

    17:14 I agree with the conversation thus far, one thing id like to add in the mix as to why is DvD even still an option beyond its the most profitable is.. (and i might be wrong here) the DvD forum that came together in the first place to build it has the most amount of companies attached to the DVD licence. Sony mainly owns Blu Ray but Sony, Phillips, Pioneer, Panasonic, Toshiba and a number of other all get that lovely royalties pay from DVD sales and less so from Blu Ray.
    The video might go on to highlight this anyways but thats in part how we got the '06 format war sony had the better format so why share when you can push to be the one cashing all those licence royalties cheques from all the other manufacturers and studios using your products.
    So keeping DVD "out there" means a few bucks still coming in to all those who didnt back blu ray at the start.

    Great Article 🎉
    100% agree on many points.
    - DVDs are a waste of time given the proliferation of 4K screens.
    - the issue is EVERY disc-device/player in the average household, going back 15+ years, will play DVDs.
    - Collectors Editions will completely take over the physical disc market, by end of 2020s IMHO ❤
    - New release standard DVDs have little to NO resale value.
    Thankfully there will NEVER be 8K discs. 🎉

Ive bought a bunch of 4k stuff, but my player and tv make the blu's look so good, that its not worth the cost hike for stuff Im not certain that Ill watch again, or some sick new transfer. I can get 10 used blurays for $20 bucks, lots of other deals all over the place, and that is acceptable for just casually watching something. If I find something I really like I can grab the 4k.

    There have been a few cases where Blu-ray was actually cheaper than DVD I got the 4th season of Star Trek "Lower Decks" for $5 less than the DVD version.... it's a matter of shopping around & getting lucky at times.And when you buy any release depends when you buy as well...the same release can sometimes be far more expensive when first released whereas waiting till the initial hype lessons over time & that's where bargains happen,my friend bought the Nightmare on Elm Street 8 movie set for $110 I got the same exact set 10 months later for $22 (your mileage may vary)

    VHS tapes were very expensive to make, which lead to low sell-through marketing. Most movies cost around $80 each (over $200 in 2024 dollars). Everyone owned a VCR, but you would mostly record stuff onto blank tapes or rent new releases. At the time DVDs were released, sell-through VHS (at around $15-20) had started to catch on, but people hadn't yet built up huge collections. DVDs were not only a huge increase in image quality, but the were seen as a gold standard format and were launched at sell-through prices. Also, DVD recording was expensive at first. So buying pre-recorded DVDs caught on quick and lots of people bought huge collections. ~ When BR came along, it was more expensive, and the increase in quality was not as significant, but most importantly, people now had huge collections they did not see the value in replacing. That factor simply didn't exist in the VHS-DVD transition.

    Aside from the great reasons you gave I think the reason DVD over ran vhs was because of the adoption of the PS2. So many people ended up with a high end dvd player in their home and they became hot rentals then it was over. I think it’s staying power is because everything that plays the new formats is still backward compatible to DVD and DVD is a much cheaper option than the HD formats and if you buy tv shows on disc DVD is the most affordable way to go. I also think we as Americans don’t deal well with technological change over.

    The key point is among myself and you, we live in a vacuum thinking it's just $5 more to upgrade because we want higher quality resolution... but for the very casual viewer, they just do not care enough to pay the extra money. Or it's possible they still haven't bought a blu-ray player. Although like yourself, I don't know anyone who actively buys DVDs for new releases, I do know folks who buy DVDs of shows or films that is not available or when it's still significantly cheaper to buy a DVD particularly on the used market or budget stores like Big Lots. I know a friend who says that although he sees that 4Ks and Blu-rays are better quality, he watches the film itself and the additional resolution doesn't make a significant difference to his overall viewing enjoyment. We are all different people and have different preferences and tolerances... I like to use food for example, some people only eat prime grade steaks while others are perfectly fine with choice grade.

    Just like VHS and Laserdisc were in the 80s and 90s, DVD still is for many home video releases such as movies, TV shows, cartoons and concerts the only way to watch them since many of those will never get an official release on current upgraded video formats or become available on any stream platform.

      I've watched old concerts on TH-cam. Sometimes new concerts come out from the same group on bluray and 4k. They might be a different concert but a better experience if the surround sound mix is better, along with better picture.
      I don't recommend throwing away the stuff on old formats. Even though it was great to watch and the best available at the time, doesn't mean it always hold up real well.
      If you already own it, it's free. I just don't understand those that continue to buy in VHS, DVD formats still.

    For me it's simple. If it's a comedy, drama or other genre that doesn't rely much on effects or immersive sound, the upgrade isn't usually worth the price. Plus there's a lot of TV content that was shot on video and just won't benefit much if at all from an HD transfer, so the dvd is about as good as it can look.

    The only reasons why DVDs are still in production in 2024. Is bc the studios still have not released at least half of there catalog titles still only available on DVD to this day. And the studios still release some of there new releases only on DVDs & not released them either on bluray or 4k. And lastly the studios need to do less surport the DVD format & surport more of the bluray & 4k format. And if the studios do all this we would see the DVD format drop off & the bluray & 4k format would take over & dominate the whole format & the market charts sales would be higher then what they are now

    Oh, I know this one. Because they sell the most. A lot of older people and people on the poorer side of collecting never bothered to upgrade to Bluray. They figured DVD still works, and even on HDTV's DVD players have a HDMI port. Like my father for instance, he never would have switched from VHS to DVD but Star Wars 3 wasn't going to be released on VHS. At least that was the one I used as an example with him to show him that they aren't making VHS anymore meaning we'd never get another new film. So we got one of those VHS/DVD combo packs. I didn't have a bluray player until I started working and had my own money. I went to a black Friday sale and got the player and whatever films I got that year during the sale. I didn't bother with 4K because I personally don't see the difference much, I own 4k's because they come in the Steelbooks, and have watched them or back with Black Friday was still a thing, I got a 4/Blu pack on sale at a better rate then blu by itself. They also seem to have a higher fail rating. I have a 4k player and PS5 (for now, I have it listed on ebay as i'm dumping it) and don't notice a difference in the blu or 4k difference, except 4 doesn't have any special features or sometimes even the visually impaired audio track. Which i sometimes use for either background noise or when I was still with my ex she was blind and that was how she got to enjoy the films with me.

    Today it is not worth having a DVD player, even if you only collect DVDs as a Blu ray player also plays DVDs, and with the Blu ray player's upscaling function DVDs look better when played on a Blu ray player. And in terms of image quality differences between DVD and Blu ray, it is a little more complicated. Among other things, due to the upscaling function. For example, if I put Mad Max Fury Road on first on DVD and then on Blu-ray, you basically can't tell the difference. If I put on a DVD with a film from the 80s, and it is, for example, Indiana Jones Raiders of the lost art that is HD, restored and remastered, it looks fantastic. If it is a film from the same period that has not been restored or remastered, it is just as bad or worse than VHS. A few examples are Missing in action with chuck Norris and weekend with Bernie. Almost unwatchable. What makes me stick to DVDs, in addition to being cheaper, is that in order for Blu Rays to be played, the player needs to be connected to the internet in order to download firmware updates. And it's a must, because if you don't download the firmware, your Blu Rays simply can't be played. And if you have to be connected to the internet, I could just as well have streaming. For reference, I have a 55 Qled TLC TV.

      That's true. I choose not to buy those. I've gotten new blurays for $3 and $5 and 4k UHD BD for $10 and $20 frequently. I've paid $25 for a couple of 4Ks.
      The only time I've paid over $30 was for 5-disc Jurrasic Park 4k/bluray set and Avatar 4k Collector set and that was $33 each on ebay, months apart.

    Hey bud. The way theres all kinds of content creators getting into physical media collecting and they’re all saying it’s DVDs they’re referring to, then you have the actual collector market not even knowing anybody who collects DVDs, there’s another page about to turn and another regime of taste makers reinsuring interest into DVDs, and I wouldn’t surprised if the blu ray 4k collectors basically miss out on what the hip thing will be in a few years. I think it will have to do with the vintageness of the DVDs. Just saying it’s a possibility because all the hipsters went out and got all the DVDs from the thrift stores it turns out being a situation where an old mega produced 2002 edition of uncle buck on DVD is worth more than mad max seven on 8k. Food for wondering

    • @frommatorav1
      @frommatorav1 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The hipsters can keep their Uncle Buck DVD. I'd never pay extra to get worse quality. I like to get better quality at the same price but will pay more if I have to, but not a lot more.
      DVD should have been phased out for bluray, like he suggested in the video. If only common sense could have prevailed back then.

    2 reasons dvds are sill being made. 1. they still sell like like gold, actually they still outsell blurays and 4Ks. 2. not all films can be scanned for a bluray or 4K, because thier original film elements are missing or dont exist anymore, so if they did get a bluray or 4K it would be a super upscaled picture instead of a native 1080p or 4K image which theres no point to, because it would be cheaper to just put out a lower quality scan on a dvd

  • @Mowglibaloo2
    @Mowglibaloo2 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Dvd upscaling is good on Sony TVs. They are more than adequate for some sitcoms where you don't need to pay top dollar. Dvds have the best menu systems - you can tell the attention to detail in the menus.

    This is the most obnoxious and judgey video I've ever seen in the physical media space on TH-cam. First off, like it or not, the world is dominated by DVD not Blu ray and 4k - the math is there for you to peruse at your leisure anytime you like. You and this Aussie content creator have alternately insulted peoples' economic means in buying DVDs; you've insulted peoples' intelligence in buying DVDs and you've even bagged on old folks for buying DVDs! And then your answer to this supposed "problem" is "why don't we just push all DVDs off a cliff so no one can buy them anymore". What the hell are you two on??? And more importantly, what dog do you have in this fight? -- especially in light of the fact their purchasing choices have absolutely no impact on yours! Do your parents have stock in blu ray and 4k manufacturing?

    VHS is the best. The owner of streaming don’t like it cus it’s the only uncut version of movies. They also don’t like the fact that you can fast forward thru the fbi warning etc. I like that I can stop a tape and it stays and can continue anytime anywhere
