hello, I will be joining as software engineer at Ford (which I am grateful for considering the job market). However, product design has really piqued my interest in the last few weeks. Would you say UX is much more competitive even for senior positions? (because swe is also too competitive in junior positions) I am a bit confused about my long term career (whether should I stick to swe or transition to product design role) and your inputs would be valuable :D
Uday, congrats on your SWE role at Ford!! Given your situation, I'd recommend staying at Ford and seeing how you can hop onto projects/tasks that involve UX/product design. It's much easier to transition roles between a company than to recruit for another company for a completely different role. No need to rush with choosing which path to take down the line - speak with your team to see what projects you try out and go from there :)

Hello! The Google UX Design course is the only "formal training" I did for UX design. Beyond that, it was hackathons and projects. Of course, I learned a ton from talented designers on TH-cam such as chunbuns, femke.design, mizko, and so on.
@urdarkside1 Just adding to the thread, I would like to recommend a classic book, "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug. It has been revised since 2000. Other themes you can include in your search: infographics, data visualization, human computer interactions
I rarely comment here on TH-cam but absolutely loved this video, I guess I’m guilty for putting too much “stuff” on my presentation slides 😅 now I’m also really curious to learn more about the difference when presenting to a recruiter and a design manager never thought about this before…
@@karinz.wei99 I am going to hazard a guess from my work experience as a former COO of various startups. Unless the recruiter comes from a design background, the recruiter is primarily concerned with finding the right candidate for the job requirements within budget and the hiring deadline. You would not want to go into too much detail about your design process, and focus on showing why you are the right candidate for the job. You can also show how you are ready to hit the ground running and the eagerness to grow with the company. For the design manager, the main aim is to solve the business problems associated with design. Hence, the focus is on how your design process and skillsets can solve business problems. As a designer, define how you can either generate more revenue or cut costs. You can generate more revenue by increasing user retention (LTV) through design for stickiness, making it easier for users to make a purchasing decision by simplifying the selection and purchasing process or just making it easier for new users to sign up. You can cut costs by removing unnecessary steps in the app, details (bells and whistles) to be maintained, or finding easier design solutions to solve a problem (e.g. redesigning user workflows/ instead of producing an instructional video, maybe a simple diagram or clearer process would solve the same problem).
As someone who has been in UX for 10 years and conducted many interviews this one of the best case study presentation I’ve seen. For other who are looking to land ux job this is what you need to model when you are presenting your work. Great job and you will be going far in your career
