    [SURFACE LAPTOP STUDIO REVIEW]
    I learned something about myself this week - and tell me if you think it applies to you as well. When it comes to my tech, I like devices that change state.
    A wearable camera whose remote turns into a tripod (Insta360 Go2); a drone that collapses to be carried (DJI Mavic Air); a phone that converts into a tablet, or a pocket square (Samsung Galaxy Fold / Flip). To me, tech is at its most exciting when it can physically change based on my needs at the time.
    Microsoft is no stranger to that approach, having kicked out three generations of its Surface Book over the past half decade or so - and I’ve just spent a week with the convertible that replaces it. On today’s MrMobile video, Michael Fisher reviews the Surface Laptop Studio, a Windows 11 PC that can transform into your digital drafting table … or a top-notch TH-cam tablet ... when it’s not busy bring a (pretty pricey) conventional laptop.

The ones that came between those, ME, Vista, and 8 we're terrible and now 11 is starting out on that same trend. Was really wanting a SB4. I have a 2 that I've use as my daily for work PC for years. Regularly pull the tablet mode off to show something to someone at another desk. And used it for gaming, like Overwatch, while traveling. I wanted an up-to-date modern spec version of that. This thing seems a bit much, with not enough on the inside.

    • @danm4320
      @danm4320 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I dunno, I have the SB3 and whilst I like the detachable screen, it's really cumbersome when I have apps open that are using the GPU (as you need to close them). It seems so much better that you can just flip it.

    • @blaster915
      @blaster915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree, I've had a 2 for a few years now (and probably will for a few years more). But it seems this direction Microsoft has gone has shown me the next place to go isn't the Studio, its their Pro line which has really stepped up to the plate.

    • @napilopez
      @napilopez 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Brian, I can see why it would disappoint some SB users, but having using the SB1 to SB3, and now on the SLS, this new design is SO much better for my use. I use it in 'tablet' mode literally every day, and switching between modes is just so much more convenient on the SLS. Before you often had to close dGPU apps and disconnect peripherals when switching modes, the latch would fail to open some times, and I had had to do that awkward dance of removing the screen, flipping it around, and aligning it with the tabs. Sometimes it'd take 15-30 seconds just to quickly switch modes. On the SLS it takes literally one second, so I find myself switching between modes much more often. I feel like it fulfills the original promise of the Surface Books much better.
      I also get better battery life than out of the 15" SB3 despite the smaller battery for everyday lightweight tasks. And the inking experience is much better, and the pen won't get lost because of the super strong magnet and position. Gaming is also roughly comparable with the 15" SB3 in a smaller device, plus RTX benefits, so I'm happy with it considering how few 2-in-1s have dedicated GPUs
      Of course it's not as good if you really need the lightweight tablet. But for me tablet mode was mostly for writing notes or editing images on a desk, or watching movies in bed or on the couch, where the weight doesn't matter.
      I've also tried the Asus Flow X13, BT the way, which offers much of the same stuff with a better spec'd Ryzen, but it's not nearly as pleasant to use or pretty, the keyboard is worse, it's louder, it gets warmer, the display is inferior, and the performance improvement isn't noticeable in everyday use for me. The SLS has its flaws, but it's nearly perfect for me.

    • @matzebob

      @Brian what's your battery life on that machine? Bought mine in 2018 and battery life tanked to around 4 hours...

    • @PeterHamlin
      @PeterHamlin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also have a SB2 15" and love it. My battery is pretty compromised, otherwise it still runs like a charm. I love the detachable tablet, but think I would like the SLS approach better where you can more fluidly switch between modes. I agree with you about the internals -- the middling cpu is the main reason I didn't buy the SLS and I'm hoping an update improves on that. Meantime, my good old SB2 is doing what I need it to do, as long as I'm near an outlet!

    Nice review! I've been on the fence about this as an upgrade from a Surface Book 2 15" If the cpu was a little more powerful, I'd buy it in a second. The gpu is fine (I'm not a gamer, and from my experience with the SB2, I just need a little gpu oomph for the 2d and 3d applications I use). I really do love the flow of the form -- the easy transition to studio mode is something I'd use a lot. I use the stylus a lot too, and that's beautifully implemented.
    After almost 5 years with the Surface Book 2, I've been very happy with it. I love the removable screen and use it regularly. Because the larger battery and gpu are in the keyboard, that means the huge screen is magically lightweight. But it also means it gets hot, it slows down in any gpu-using software, and the battery life is extremely short. The SLS addresses these issues very elegantly.

    I have an Asus Zenbook Duo (not the Pro) and I have a 512GB SD card sitting in it 24/7 effectively doubling more storage. My love for media certain fills it up, but it also allows to keep the main drive less than half capacity, prolonging the life of this heavily used laptop (easily 8 hours everyday).
    I dare say the SD card reader is the most under rated feature of most smart phones & laptops that still offer it. The only reason they would remove such a feature is the same as apple.. forcing us to pay more to increase storage (or rent cloud storage, which is never ideal compared to an SD)
    I do rent cloud storage on OneDrive just 100GB as an on the go back up.

      SD cards die much faster when you use it that way so make sure you have it all backed up. Extra M.2 slot or mSATA on motherboard would be a much better option since it takes almost same amount of space as SD card reader.

    I was really hoping for a spec upgraded surface book, I like the form factor better. Still undecided if I like this or not and if it would be practical 🤔

    • @Dare2Blink
      @Dare2Blink 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its not really possible to upgrade the cpu of the Surface book because of the cpu being in the screen portion of the device, you could only upgrade the GPU. I just sold my SB2 a week ago to get this device, because I have no doubt it will be far, far more usefull. With the SB it takes to long and its too inconvenient to switch modes, not to mention that times it fails to do so on the first attempt, and the times it disconnected by mistake. This device literaly takes a second to switch modes and will never fail to do so, this alone makes it worth it. Of course the trade off is that there is no more tablet mode but that was incredibly rare to use anyway, therefore the benefits far outweigh the only drawback.

      Others have tried but microsoft has done it better. After decades of being number one, they have enough R&D resources to dabble into these crazy form factors. It's been a hit and miss but I freaking love how whether or not an iteration actually works, most people find themseleves in awe. In a disorientingly saturated market, Surface products are a breath of fresh air. Fucking expensive though LOL

  • @Caeric77
    @Caeric77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's FAR too expensive for the included CPU and GPU (not to mention the lack of ports and underpowered charger). Had they done better in those areas I would have seriously considered one. It's beautiful, but unfortunately nowhere near competitive in value.

      Same reason MBs don't have touch screens, pen support, microSD slots, HDMI ports, face unlock, 1080p webcams, ungradability, 2-in-1 designs, 180degree screens, detechable screens, etc.

    • @loki.8435
      @loki.8435 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RK-um9tu Let me just copy-paste my argument from another thread.
      Yeah, except the 1080p webcams, all of your arguments fall flat. Windows 10 or even 11 aren't particularly good with touchscreens, so, yeah, that's why I didn't both to buy a laptop with touch screens, pen support, 2-in-1 designs, 180 degree screens and detachable screens. About face unlock, it's only present in a handful of laptops and sometimes fails to recognise my face. Upgradability?? Surfaces themselves aren't upgradable bi*ch. MicroSD Slots?? Never used them on my old laptop. HDMI? Sorry, I can just do Airplay.

    (8:15) Also that the "Pinned" section lacks support for folders and/or groups, so all my custom Start menu grouping from Windows 10 was lost, but then again, the laptop I installed it on is no longer my main and is instead my secondary PC where I also test pre-release and development versions of some apps, including running Windows development builds.

    I'm not where I'd need to be in terms of funds to get this, art student, but a such a pleasantly designed laptop, that's powerful enough for basic gaming, to which I can connect my big boy drawing monitor, as well as use as a sketchbook when I'm on the go... It's definitely a good proposition. Price and I/O are the only drawbacks I can think of, but I do only use one full sized USB device in my workflow, if anything, the USB type C will lead to be using fewer cables when connecting the previously mentioned display. Hopefully, the different drivers won't mess with each other.
