    Welcome to The Athletic FC's TH-cam channel, where best-in-class journalism meets video.
    Chelsea are sitting mid-table far behind their London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham. It seems like Pochettino's appointment and Todd Boehly's big spend at the start of his reign hasn't worked out for the Blues. But where do they go from here?
    Joe Devine, JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie are joined by Liam Twomey, The Athletic's Chelsea Correspondent, to figure out when Chelsea will be good again.
    This is The Athletic's Week in Football.

      When will Chelsea become good again? Three steps.
      Hire a modern tactician who has previously learned from PepGuardiola.
      Buy technical, skillful and silky players under the tiki taka framework. Don’t buy physical or athletic players.
      Develop the academy into the next LaMasia, just like what ManCity did. Teach them tiki taka football, skill moves, and complex tactics at a young age.

      After seeing this it's obvious why it was canned. The Athletic clearly just want serious, boring commentary. Hearing Adam Leventhal as the host of the Athletic stuff backs this up. The analysis from John is superb, but Joe's levity is what humanises these long-form chats. That's a really interesting point from Jon - that the 'underlying numbers' argument might not be right because teams with good players *will* tend to have good underlying numbers simply because they're likely to be doing the things that get the numbers - it doesn't mean that they'll be coherent as a team.
    I'd love to see a piece picking apart the effect of the stats revolution on football - where the stats don't capture the reality, how they've warped football, what the long term effect will be. I have a fear that we'll see fewer and fewer really genius players coming through, because any high risk play will be coached out of them.
    See Grealish at Man City, a theoretically 'better' player but far less thrilling than at Villa. Imagine that effect but starting in the academies - and everyone playing percentages all the time.
    I feel like we don't see many of the great moments of instinctive skill that made football amazing, like chips from the edge of the box, because they're so low probability.

    • @brzt4256
      @brzt4256 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting point. I think you're right, but what would you do as a manager or youth team coach to change that? If you tell the kids to do more low-percentage shots they're more likely to lose games, which might jeopardise your job. Also agree with your initial comment about what Jon said, this is called Goodhart's law: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure".

    I'm proposing a video series idea - a spotlight on often overlooked teams such as Fulham, Luton Town or even championship clubs like Ipswich Town, showcasing how they can rise into top teams. It can help us understand the small scale structures and the inner workings, often challenged by limited resources. This way, the Athletic can enhance media equity. While content focused on the top six clubs may draw views, as an established media house, I am sure The Athletic has the expertise to innovate and engage audiences with compelling stories from less prominent teams.
    Also, I would love to see videos covering women's football because I believe the content quality here can attract an audience for it.

    • @karl_franks

      it's a shame given how much women's football has grown in popularity over the last few years they haven't capitalised on it, their coverage on youtube seems to only ever be a handful of videos around major tournaments

    • @oscarx-ray3545
      @oscarx-ray3545 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Your premise (which also wouldn't be popular enough to drive engagement) falls at the first hurdle;
      "a spotlight on often overlooked teams such as Fulham, Luton Town or even championship clubs like Ipswich Town, showcasing how they can rise into top teams"
      A two second video of Jon saying "They can't" into the camera isn't really going to generate revenue.

    • @dot4207
      @dot4207 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@oscarx-ray3545 I assume your reply is sarcastic. However, if it is serious scepticism, I believe they can on receiving adequate resources. Media attention is one of them.
      I should have used the phrase 'rise into successful teams'. Because success varies in form. A team's story of avoiding relegation is equally interesting as that of one winning a trophy.

    • @dot4207
      @dot4207 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There might be a concern about the initial revenue. However, the potential for long term growth and positive impact is immense.
      It begins with creating sustainable and inclusive content. Gradually, it will appeal to a wider audience and attract new fans, sponsors and generate new revenue streams. The reputation of the brand will enhance, on its commitment to equity, and will help them appeal to socially conscious consumers.

      The costs are amortized, which no one seems to understand what that actually means despite being a very simple concept. So including player sales, theyre probably actually running at a profit on players on both a cash flow and accounting basis.
      They wont be for long if they keep it up, and those yearly transfer payments are going to make future purchases virtually impossible for like the next five years from my understanding of the installments owed, but thats not the topic. Weirdly.

    It should be noted that Amorin has shown the ability to adapt his systems to his opponents. The Taca de portugal semi final against benfica has proven this. In build up, he switched to a 3-3-4 and OOP he played a 5-2-3 mid block and allowed benfica to have the ball more and threaten. This is very similair to wt bayer did against bayern. It allowed for around 20 shots while only conceding 6. I think they would need a change in personal though to have Amorin to succeed at chelsea, and hed need a proper structure for long term.

    The issue is a lack of leadership, which stems from a lack of players being established enough to be a leader. Most have only been there 12 months, and when you start somewhere you naturally focus on yourself before you start getting involved with other people. It's hard then when the 2 longer serving players James and chilwell both aren't really that outspoken and obviously also have injury issues. Then the senior players, you have Silva who maybe still doesn't speak English? And sterling. With sterling maybe we'll just blame the position, as you don't get many captains who play on the wings unless they are truly remarkable players. It's reached a point now where those 4 pre season leadership contenders are probably not playing either through injury or just not being better than the younger players in the same position.
    So it will take 2+ years I think as someone becomes comfortable leading the team. That will probably be colwill and disasi, as they both look to have a bit of personality and leadership. Enzo will hopefully grow here too, and not look like Bruno too much , and actually Jackson seems quite popular and outgoing, so he could be a big figure if his form holds. Palmer's just a good player, a bit more independent which is fine, and Gallagher I feel is a bit of a struggle as he's not a big name and not that technically great. For example how much would world cup winner Enzo Fernandes want to listen to Connor Gallagher? But if he puts in another good season then he could become a respected figure.
    I just think that they didn't factor in squad relationships when overhauling the squad

    You are wrong to assume Amorim would simply extrapolate his Sporting tactics to Chelsea. He has adapted his style to different teams and their relative strenght in their division and he would do the same with Chelsea.
    Amorim is a smart coach and he would do a LOT better than Poche with the same squad

    interesting analysis but what should of been questioned is the volume of injuries Lavia (would of been in the double pivot we problay would have seen less of Gallagher),with Caicedo
    Nkunku link up play would be more effective no captain leader Reece James etc
    What more important as well as why they have not been successfull is is why at times chelsea have actually performed well.

    I'm a Chelsea fan, but I have also worked on Wall Street as an investment banker. Clearlake and Boehly are clueless. They have destroyed value. The club is not worth what they paid for it. Somehow, by turning the club into Brighton 2.0 they expect to win major trophies. Brighton is a mid-table side and so now is Chelsea. They have broken the club. Some bad American investors do this. They a premium for a business and then fire the management team, and bankruptcy can often follow. Abramovich's club was successful because of the management team he created. Clearlake was buying that expertise. They will struggle to hire a top coach to replace Pochettino, anybody good will want CL football

    • @Xebthebarbarian
      @Xebthebarbarian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Absolutely!
      De Zerbi got the best out of Caicedo or Colwill and made Mudryk shine at Shakhtar.
      De Zerbi knows how to build from the back and especially how to set up to give his wingers room to operate almost as a counter attacking side and that would help all of our wingers put better numbers especially Mudryk.
      We need him although i hate dealing with Brighton again.

    • @Iamwhatyousayiam
      @Iamwhatyousayiam 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah, I'd rather try out Ruben Amorin.
      He emphasises organisation in his team. Builds a strong defensive base first with ball playing keeper and CBs.
      Attacks with wingbacks and front 3.
      Take a look at the players that played under him..and you'll see the likes of Joao Palinha, Mathias Nunes, Pedro Porro, Diomande..Victor Gyokeres...the guy raises his players value...so he improves the players...
      He has won the league title at Sporting, too, along with domestic trophies.
      Only if he can win a European title..then everyone would give him a lot more hype..

    • @Xebthebarbarian
      @Xebthebarbarian 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Iamwhatyousayiam They are both good modern managers but De Zerbi has more premier league experience and has worked with Cucurella,Colwill,Caicedo and Mudryk and you could say that he made these players look so good hence the reason why Chelsea payed fortunes for them.
      I'm not saying that at Chelsea they aren't good players but they aren't used to the best of their abilities so De Zerbi could do that as well as Amorim.
      Also De Zerbi is proving a good manager despite the fact that mainly Chelsea keeps taking his best players from him and that at Brighton he also has a very young team with a lot of players on their first season in the EPL.
      Give him a much higher budget and players he loves (said an year ago before the Arsenal v Chelsea Mudryk saga) that he believes Mudryk has the potential to be a Balloon d'Or so give the man more money and better players that he currently has and he will make you a title contender.

    It is ridiculous how a man of Pochettino’s intelligence has overstretched poor Caicedo in that thankless midfield role. It’s almost like Pochettino has sacrificed goals being conceded so that the team scores more. Last season if you recall, the team really struggled registering a single in most games.

    Fantastic analysis, the problem is trying to rush something that cannot be rushed. Time is the only answer to Chelsea's problems and changing managers is meaningless as the 5th change 5 years later or no manager change in the same time frame has the same effect but a seemingly different reason for the success

    Brilliant video. This explains what chelsea problem is. What chelsea need to do in the summer is keep pochettino and sign 3 experienced players that builds on this team. I don’t think it will take the, 3 years, but moreso 2 or maybe even next season if they keep pochettino and sign the right players. Oshimen/gyokeres will be game changing signing for chelsea. Their underlying stat are already good, so chelsea will be good closer to 2 or 1 year

    As a Chelsea fan i agree to a certain extent. Poch is not the right manager for this job and not the perfect fit for the squad and he’s tactically outdated. But you can’t really fully put all the blame on him as we lost the core of this team many important players and signed new players and a new team with less experience and they will take time to gel together but the issue is our directors as we have two sporting directors and i don’t think they’re good enough for the job or maybe two men can’t can’t steer the ship. Hiring a top sporting director should be a priority and changing the manager too with names imo who will be good such as (De Zerbi - Inzaghi) etc. A striker like Osimhen will fix a lot of the issues in the final third and selling more fringe players to reduce the squad number to keep everyone happy and focus on their development individually. A RCB is a priority too as of Fofana is injury prone and i think if he’s fit he would fix a lot of our issues but he’s not and Chalobah is getting sold and Disasi imo isn’t good enough. A LB is needed as i think Chilwell isn’t that guy anymore if we manage to get 3 signing or maybe 4 MAX and key signings like those positions i don’t think it will effect the harmony and you can build on that.

    This Chelsea Team plays richly into De Zerbi's tactics and with him they would make a nice team. Mudryk, Sterling, Palmer, and Madueke fit into the high wide and creative wingers he prefers and Both Caicedo and Enzo Fernande would make a good ball retention midfield two ahead of Colwill and Axel Disasi partnership with Badiashile and Fofana making good backup with Chilwell, Gusto and James fitting into his high intensity marauding Full Backs. this also calls for very good Deep Lying forwards like Viktor Gyökeres, Santiago Gimenez, and Lois Openda with Christopher Nkunku or Cole Palmer playing as a No. 10(Raumdeuter). These Chelsea players enjoy pressing high, they just need a more tactical manager like Xavi, De Zerbi, Ange Postecoglou, or Hansi Flick. and no offense but Pochettino is not the man for this job and would do better with a team like Everton or even Liverpool.

    I think Chilwel is the worst player in that team. What Malo Gusto provides going forward and defending is in complete contrast to what Chilwel does. No quick balls from him to his forwards in counterattacking situations. Always putting the balls back to the center backs every time he receives it.
    Second, the Chelsea wingers just don't help in the defensive phase after a turnover. What City and Liverpool do with their wingers immediately after a turnover is completely different from Chelsea. Raheem Sterling, Madueke, even Jackson, they just walk back after a turnover. It's shocking. This is all on the manager. He should be drilling this basics into his wingers. That space in midfield after a turnover should be covered by this wingers. Caicedo and Enzo can't cover all that space for God's sake. It doesn't matter if they were bought for a billion.
    Third, the distances between the lines must be very minimal. It's shocking how much distance there is between the defense, midfielders and forwards.
    Go watch Chelsea play. It's clear as daylight. The wingers in the defensive phase, goodness me. The press is also not structured. They need to close manmark to prevent the opposition from even receiving the balls. Just like Newcastle does. Newcastle unit pressing is fabulous.

    The question of when Chelsea will be good again, is relative on the definition of what good is.
    If it means consistently winning and challenging for major trophies, then Chelsea's years away considering how far ahead Man City, Liverpool & Arsenal currently are! Due to FFP, & how much more wealthier more and more Premier League clubs currently are, Chelsea simply cannot "buy" success, and expect it overnight.
    While Pocchetino is a good manager, & so too are many of the players in their current squad, good is simply not good enough considering the unimaginable levels Man City has reached, with even a fantastic Liverpool and Arsenal struggling to reach that high standard!
    Chelsea probably needs to get in a manager like Diego Simone, one who just as he has &continues to do with Atletico, can build a team able to challenge the better clubs, and still thrive in the Champions League season after season. Naturally Simione will require signings and time to implement his own style and structure, but i can see him consistently delivering Champions League qualification within a season or maybe 2, but set foundation for long term success the way Mourinho managed during his first stint at the club.
